If you are too, please vote for 38 Degrees to take it on as a campaign.

But how/why does it boost the circulation figures, Avantia?

OP posts:
DrNortherner · 18/02/2011 20:06

shazzg what a nice lady. Glad to see I rile you Grin

JessinAvalon · 18/02/2011 20:10

DrNortherner - do you not realise that some of these subjects can trigger stress in some people? Why would you be glad that you rile someone by trivialising verbal sexual abuse that they were subjected to?

OP posts:
Avantia · 18/02/2011 20:10

JessinAvalon - I dont know I am not a media analyst ! It can't be anything to do with the 'news' it carries ! Grin

chandellina · 18/02/2011 20:14

DrNortherner and others, yes men will always "behave badly" and perhaps many will even seek out nude pictures and video of women. However how these activities are viewed wiithin a society can vary massively, from being outlawed to being seen as totally normal and no real harm to anyone within the society.

I take the view that the widespread images of women in sexual poses and situations do harm society, both its most vulnerable members - children - and women in general.

The net result is that girls and women are seen as more sexually available than they actually are, and socially pressured to be so. Their non-appearance based qualities and accomplishments are also potentially given less recognition.

And while you might always have pervy truck drivers, it should be made clear to them that their comments are unwelcome and unacceptable. In some places (not in the UK in my experience at least), you can't walk down the street without several comments on your appearance and invitations to perform sexual acts. Is that what we want to happen here? It is very distressing, particularly for young girls.

Society needs to set boundaries.

DrNortherner · 18/02/2011 20:18

Oh come on shaz has never said she has been subjected to sexual abuse. She has just told me to go and fuck myself! Not me who's out of order here.

WEll yep, I'm bringing up my son to respect woman too.

Avantia · 19/02/2011 13:51

yes thank you - I am bringing up my sons to repect women - but in the real world ! Not some feminist ideological world.

I may not agree that getting rid of page 3 will stop the rot - epecially as many of you seem to think that porn mags are OK Confused- but if I had daughters I would be bringing them up to be strong , stand up for themselves , not to be intimated by a bit of print in what will be on the bottom of the guinea pigs cage the next day for them to shit on ! Grin

A few corrections:

Rupert Murdoch didn't introduce P.3 - was already established when he bought the paper.

the girls they use don't have implants

The overwhelming majority of Sun readers are male working class.

One recent editor did attempt to axe P.3

BlackBag · 19/02/2011 14:31

When I worked Page 3 of The Sun was an absolute embarrasment.

The Sun was very popular because many of the skilled men had poor literacy and it had a reading age of approx. 10 years old. The nicer men, many with teenage daughters were embarrassed by it, flicking over quickly, I appreciated that they did n't leave it lying around.
The unpleasant men used to use it as a excuse for a bit of low grade bullying, feeling being that because it was in a newspaper it was n't porn and therefore socially exceptable to debate the assets of 'Sarah, 19, a greengrocers daughter' and what they would do if she ever fancied a large, beer bellied steel fixer with a mild gambling habit.

Right as the foreman used to say 'give us page 3 I'm off for my 10 o'clock'...

JessinAvalon · 19/02/2011 15:01

Not in some feminist ideological world? Do we just accept low standards and not ever strive to change things for the better?

Many freedoms, if not all, that women enjoy today are available because feminists fought for them. The fact that women can even get a mortgage on their own is thanks to feminists.

The feminist ideological world may be a long way off but I don't want to sit back and wait for men to give this to us (as if that would ever happen).

When reading that, this quote came to mind:

?All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men (and women) do nothing'

OP posts:
Unrulysun · 19/02/2011 15:45

What Jess said.

And I am going to raise my dd as if she lived in 'some feminist ideological world' because that way if people try to abuse, coerce or opress her she'll tell them to go fuck themselves.

Avantia · 19/02/2011 17:19

Why does every woman have to be a feminist ? Anyway its Wine o'clock ! Grin

OliveMalay · 19/02/2011 17:25

YANBU.

Avantia, it is women's choice whether to be a feminist. However it's quite selfish to benefit from things feminists have achieved, such as voting, equal pay and so on, without making any effort to challenge any inequalities.

chandellina · 19/02/2011 17:35

i have always lived in a feminist ideological world. I was raised to believe I was equal to men, should be compensated accordingly for my work, and generally should be treated with respect like any other human being.

I don't like infringements on those worthy ideals, whether it's pornification of the UK or the Taliban keeping girls out of schools.

JessinAvalon · 19/02/2011 17:55

So you believe that women shouldn't have equal rights and opportunities to men, Avantia? Because to me, striving for women to have equal rights and opportunities to men is what being a feminist is all about.

YABU. Apart from the fact that Page 3 does a LOT to help soldiers etc, both me and DH see nothing wrong with looking a nice bit of talent in the paper. It's cheaper than a strip club :)

JessinAvalon · 19/02/2011 18:14

So if your DH didn't get to look at page 3, he'd have to go to a strip club to look at some tits? Confused

Also, aren't there women soldiers now? It being 2011 and 'n' that. What helps them?

OP posts:
RayneStorm · 19/02/2011 18:18

I didn't say DH. I said DH and ME! We both like page 3 and the strip club thing was just a joke (Although we do both like to go!)

What does there being women soldiers have t do with page 3? Are page 3 girls not allowed to help out now incase they offend the people they're trying to promote?

RayneStorm · 19/02/2011 18:22

In any case my cousin (female) is a serving soldier abd I've just asked hera bout this. She as no issue either. I think you assume taht all women should be horrified or treatened by P3 when most aren't. Women being OK with it doesn't sit rightw ith you does it?
