If you are too, please vote for 38 Degrees to take it on as a campaign.

OMG hymie are you a militant feminism or what?

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 14:40

feminist (der)

hymie · 17/02/2011 14:43

No Jamie.

But I do have a Mother/Wife and Daughters.

I just don't see the point of the culture of whacking tits in a daily paper.

I don't know how most Men think but when the girls in the rag are younger than your Daughter it starts to turn you off...maybe i'm just a bit warped in the head.

lol @ feminist :)

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 14:47

Nah - don't deny it hymie - you are a nasty dungaree-wearing, snarling feminist

superwomanisamyth · 17/02/2011 14:54

Call me prejudiced but if I see anyone reading the Sun I immediately think to myself "moron". I find Page 3 terribly offensive and I think that people get away with treating women in a way that they would never get away with treating black people for instance. Being racist is definetely a big no no whereas being sexist is not viewed as bad and I ask: Why not??

hymie · 17/02/2011 14:58

I've never been called a feminist before. Is that a bad thing :)

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 14:58

No - I am pulling your plonker. I think it's an excellent thing. Not everyone seems to agree though ......

hymie · 17/02/2011 15:01

To be honest i'm an equal opportunist.

many of the Feminist views I just don't agree with.

But on this specific point I can't see where there's a need in having young girls half naked in a newspaper.

It's for news.

SardineQueen · 17/02/2011 15:22

I think you should be flattered hymie Grin

I am pleased that you have posted to show up that many men feel that page3 is something they would rather not have or could do without. Not just us dungaree clad loons.

Smile
hymie · 17/02/2011 15:31

The media should survey the readers of the newspaper.

My kids read the paper (I don't buy that one)but if they didn't put chests all over it I would probably buy it.

Institutionalised bravado in a porta cabin is what the page is used for.

Takes dungarees off just after this post and dons more suitable attire :)

Violet5 · 17/02/2011 17:17

I have voted to ban it and don't think i need to explain why, i'm also passing the link on to everyone i know Smile

Unrulysun · 17/02/2011 17:27

Jess - Bingo! Crispmonster @ 10.47a.m. I believe. One slightly charred bra heading your way :)

begonyabampot · 17/02/2011 18:05

what's weird that a guy can sit on the bus looking at page 3, when a woman beast feeding on a bus (even discretely) might draw some funny looks, smirks and even possibly comments. Funny old world.

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 18:07

Conversly begonya - One may not ogle cocks of attractive men in the newspaper, but may be subjected to cocks of unattractive men in the street

Avantia · 17/02/2011 18:28

Are we that insecure ladies that we feel intimiadted and uncomfortable when we sit next to a man looking at page 3 ? My stomach turns when I read about young soliders dying in Afganistan not when I see page 3. If a girl want to get her tits out and make a decent living out of it instead of living off the state than good luck to her.

Unless we look like a page 3 model ourselves than I dont think that man would give us a second glance !

I would hope that the majority of us are stronger than to be intimated like this .

JamieLeeCurtis · 17/02/2011 18:35

Not intimidated. Pissed off, Avantia

Fedupandfuming · 17/02/2011 18:38

As someone said earlier, the grotesque thing about p3 is how it reduces women to sexual objects in such a banal way, ie many readers may not even care about the tits, but they're just there, for anyone so minded to leer at before turning over to read the sports pages or whatever. Women/ tits are such a cheap commodity that they can be served up as no big deal, just a bog standard bit of filler.

It has an insidious effect on women's chances of ever being seen as completely equal, and as such is pretty far from harmless.

And as for it being ok if women have chosen to pose for it, that's a completely disingenuous argument. Individuals can consent to all kinds of things without them being acceptable to society as a whole

Stillchuckingit · 17/02/2011 19:37

Well said Begony

olderandwider · 17/02/2011 19:45

The topless model may be making a mint from her tits, but her picture is reinforcing the Western cultural norm that women are to be primarily valued for their looks and apparent sexual availability. Which kind of pisses me off.

chandellina · 17/02/2011 20:14

YANBU. i just saw this thread today but for the first time yesterday I was actually sitting very near someone reading one of these rags (don't think it was page 3 because it was a full page spread - isn't page 3 just part of a page??). I shot him dirty looks but he was too far from me to notice and I thought it would be a bit much to start shouting across the train.

the other thing that held me up is that I like a million other people read Metro and the ES on the train and those often have near naked women. (and my morning copy of Metro yesterday happened to have a naked man in it - in the name of art.)

grrrrr.

lady007pink · 17/02/2011 20:20

I hate it too, because it reminds me of what mine once looked like...

DrNortherner · 17/02/2011 20:40

But what is wrong with valuing a (not all) woman because of her sexuality? Woman can be valued because of their intelligence, or their sense of humour, and lots of other things, surely their sexuality is just another part of that, another part of them?

If I see a woman being revered because she is brainy/funny etc I don't feel intimidated so I don't think we should feel intimidated by sexy woman.

I not anti porn, but need to think about what I feel about tits in a daily newspaper. I think it does have it's place in society, but not necessarily in a newspaper. If indeed The Sun and The Sport can be classed as Newspapers....

chandellina · 17/02/2011 21:04

i think it's true there are women and men who are outstandingly sexy and widely recognized as such. through the years that would include courtesans, film stars and the like.

that seems different though from just getting your tits out for a photo. I don't think these pictures really celebrate a woman's sexiness, but rather present her as nothing more than her parts.

SardineQueen · 17/02/2011 21:13

"Are we that insecure ladies that we feel intimiadted and uncomfortable when we sit next to a man looking at page 3 ?"

avantia when I was a 10, 12, 14 year old girl, yes I did feel uncomfortable when I sat next to men who were looking at page 3. Are you really suggesting that mine was an abnormal reaction?

"Unless we look like a page 3 model ourselves than I dont think that man would give us a second glance !"

I also spent the years from puberty to my late twenties getting second glances and much more from random men. I did not like it at all.

Why are you pretending that these things don't happen? Why must we tell our girls that it is normal for for men to look at images of women designed to arouse them, while sitting next to schoolgirls on the tube?

What do we say to our girls about how men will look at page 3, then at their chests, then at page 3, when they are well under 16 and just trying to make a bus journey. That male heterosexual sexuality reigns supreme, that as a young girl they are there to be looked at, and that they shouldn't be offended? Because men like looking at women, and there is nothing wrong with this? So what's the problem.

I'm not having it. It is a shitty message for our girls and young women. I didn't like it when men leered at me. Apparently that was wrong of me Hmm. Bollocks.

Unrulysun · 17/02/2011 21:23

Did you feel 'valued for your sexuality' SardineQueen?

I can't remember feeling so when that lorry driver drove past me aged 18, tooted his horn and did a graphic and vigorous cunnilingus action. Or on countless other occasions. My own fault clearly for looking like a page 3 model - young with breasts.

Are people using some kind of blancmange to do their thinking for them?
