I'm not a massively religious person - more of a high days and holidays person really, but I do the lent thing.

Last year I gave up Alcohol, Chocolate, Bread, Cheese and Facebook. The most miserable 40 days of my little life so far...

Let's not start a rant about religion - but what will you be giving up?

I'm inclined to give up my diet.

But I would probably regret that.

breathing · 14/02/2011 21:49

being catholic

I'm giving up on giving up!

I'm going to over indulge for 40 days and 40 nights then deal with the consequences later :)

Susiewho · 14/02/2011 21:50

Why did you do it if it made you miserable, Asteria? Not criticising, just wondering.

Thankfully an atheist, so I give up nothing for no one! Grin

pointythings · 14/02/2011 21:51

Another atheist here - I just don't see the point. I'd much rather do what I can to be the best person I can all year round.

AtYourCervix · 14/02/2011 21:52

Wine again.

and bread/cheese/chocolate/butter/cake/biscuits/sweets/fags/pizza/oil/carbs/fat/caffine/beer.

curlymama · 14/02/2011 21:52

Wow, you gave up loads! I always thought I did quite well just giving up bread! And it has the benefit of making me lose weight, so I'll be doing it again this year.

I think it's good for the soul to give something up and remember the whole story about resisting temptaion, but I'm not religious.

I might also give up meat, just to try it. I've been thinking about becoming vegetarian but I think I will find it really hard, so this would be a good test!

Susiewho · 14/02/2011 21:52

Absolutely, pointythings :) !

Itsjustafleshwound · 14/02/2011 21:52

I am going to try to give up the non-essential spending - I have fallen into a bad habit

Memoo · 14/02/2011 21:53

I think you should all give up Mumsnet!

Susiewho · 14/02/2011 21:53

Giving up meat is easy, curlymama. Especially when there are so many good reasons to do so, as well as for your own health.

KazBarTheFriendlyGhost · 14/02/2011 21:54

oh, I'll be giving up sex.......

then again I started that weeks ago

Olessaty · 14/02/2011 21:54

Yeah, dieting has made me realise how much of the fat in my diet comes from meat.

I miss fat.

Woe.

Asteria · 14/02/2011 21:55

Susiewho - I figured that 40 days was hardly a life sentence and that my usual excesses could be curbed for a little while - if only for my waistline rather than religious purposes. Lots of my friends are the same, we aren't necessarily massively religious, but we do lent etc

OP posts:
Asteria · 14/02/2011 21:55

atyourCervix - what the hell will you have left? Grin

Alouiseg · 14/02/2011 21:55

I'm giving up religion.

AnnMarlow · 14/02/2011 21:58

When does lent start this year? Is it 9th March?

curlymama · 14/02/2011 21:58

Thanks for the encouragement Susie! I'm not sure it will be easy for me, I can be quite a fussy eater and often just revert to the burger when eating out. And my dh is even more fussy than me and will end up always eating the same thing if I took meat out of his equasion, but he eats fish and I don't.

Anyway, I'm going to try, at least for vegetarian week.

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 22:00

I'm giving up fuck all, nada, zilch _ nothing.

AtYourCervix · 14/02/2011 22:00

i will be miserably virtuous and thin!

really will prob just do wine/beer. did that last year and wasn't so bad.

Itsjustafleshwound · 14/02/2011 22:00

Yip - Alouiseg - 9th March

shabby7 · 14/02/2011 22:02

you don't have to give up stuff - you can aim to do more charitable things.

MrsPresley · 14/02/2011 22:03

I'm going to give up, cooking, cleaning and ironing Grin

FabbyChic · 14/02/2011 22:04

I'm an Atheist so doing anything for anybody is a no no. Charity begins at home.
