To think local cat owners

WoTmania · 14/02/2011 12:39

could make their own gardens more appealing for their cats so said cats don't come and poo in my vegetable garden and use their own instead?

It drives me up the wall. We end up have to put netting everywhere and sticks and upturned crtaes and still the poxy things manage to dig up everything and poo. Angry

So, AIBU

YANBU at all. Why should other people's cats "have the right" to roam around my garden? I don't roam around theirs, or send my pets to crap in their dinner. If dog owners are expected to keep their animals under control, why shouldn't cat owners have to do the same thing? I'd love to be able to give them a shot of the high pressure hose, but unfortunately they tend to visit at night. How about a cat curfew so they have to be kept indoors at night, and within range of the hose during the day?

anonandlikeit · 16/02/2011 17:41

Yep a cat nappie would be a good idea.
TBH anything that would stop them shitting in my garden would be great.

I am getting to the stage where the next time my ds2 walks in cat poo & then wanders in the house with it on his shoes i think i should go & knock on my neighbours door & make them come & clean my son, his shoes, my floor & the garden.

& its not fecking "nature" people buy cats & introduce them to the neighbourhood, its not like there are huge packs of ferel cats romaing the streets. They all have collars & homes & THEIR OWN GARDEN TO SHIT IN!

newwave · 16/02/2011 17:41

MrsSparkle

Your cat must have been in someone else's garden to have drunk the anti freeze and that person may have been utterly fed up with her garden being used as a toilet/damaged by other peoples cats.

Not condoning it but I can understand it.

In response to people who said it was cruel to throw half bricks at trespassing cats I have now replaced the bricks with 4 heavy duty wellington boots, I trust this is acceptable.

scotsgirl23 · 16/02/2011 18:11

Newwave, You are an idiot. If you think it is acceptable or even understandable to kill an animal for simply trespassing on property then you are a truly horrible person.

And to post a response like that to someone who has lost a much loved family pet and watched them die in agony......Angry

and, before you throw any assumptions/accusations around; yes, I have cats, But they are kept indoor permanently so they do not mess in other people's gardens.

cakeywakey · 16/02/2011 18:19

You can understand someone poisoning a cat newwave? Unbefuckinglievable, have a Biscuit

OP, if you know who's cat it is can you have a word with them? They may offer to come and clear it up. Cats will always try to create a territory for themselves. My neighbour's cat used to shit in my garden as he was the TC of the area - even though I had two at the time.

When we moved to our new house I spoke to my new neighbours and said that if my cat became a problem then I would be happy to pop in regularly and poo-pick. My cat does have a litter tray and used to come home to poo but doesn't in this new house. We're not all irresponsible owners.

Of course, it might not be next door's cat. Cats have a natural roaming area of at least a mile. So could be from anywhere within that radius.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 16/02/2011 18:42

thing I don't get is.

You could rid the UK of cats - and there will STILL BE ANIMAL PISS AND SHIT in your garden. Bird, rats, bats, foxes, hedgehod and all the other wildlife that will find it's way into your garden.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 16/02/2011 18:45

I can't quite believe actually that you could "understand" someone putting poision down in a garden to stop their children standing in cat shit.

Yet that poison is JUST AS HARMFUL for small children as it is for adults.

cakeywakey · 16/02/2011 18:46

I'll eat it thanks Newwave, no point in wasting a good biscuit.

Carrotsandcelery · 16/02/2011 18:47

I don't condone any cruelty to any animals.

However YANBU.

I have a dog, I clean up after my dog, I do not leave my dog's mess anywhere for anyone to step in. I keep my dog in my own garden, or when out, under my control. I do not let my dog roam around other peoples' gardens and dirty other peoples' property.

I like cats but choose not to own one. Why then do I have to put up with other peoples' cats roaming around my garden, terrorising my guinea pigs and my rabbits, who do nothing to disturb any of my neighbours?

I accept that wild animals roam and come into my garden. I cannot understand why someone elses' pet is allowed to though. Why are cats made the exception? Why do dog owners have to clean up but cat owners don't? I really fail to understand that.

I also fail to understand the hypocrisy of any cat owner complaining about dog mess. It disgusts me when dog owners don't clean up but I have never ever seen a cat owner cleaning up after their cat.

Fuckwittery is back.

scotsgirl23 · 16/02/2011 18:49

Yes, I read and understood the word condone, you patronising tosser. Which is why I said "acceptable or even understandable"

however, frankly the rest of your post made it fairly clear that you think animal cruelty is acceptable - unless you have another term you'd prefer to use for throwing heavy objects at animals?

Gogopops · 16/02/2011 18:49

My neighbour has four cats and they all shit in our garden. However, my dog loves eating cat shit and comes into the house licking his lips as though he's found big treats in the garden every day . His breath smells lovely!!

Carrotsandcelery · 16/02/2011 18:50

The idea of poisoning a cat is revolting cruelty though, not to mention all the other animals who will also be poisoned. Angry

newwave · 16/02/2011 18:55

Fuckwittery is back.

Sorry! I did not notice that you had been away but welcome back all the same.

UKSky · 16/02/2011 19:26

A really good deterrent is coffee grounds. Just sprinkle liberally wherever the cat goes (or even around where it gets into your garden). They hate the stuff. You can put it anywhere, it's good for your garden, it can't hurt your children and cats absolutely hate it and won't go anywhere near it.

If you don't use ground coffee, just pop into your local coffee shop and ask for a bag.

It really, really works and you don't need to wait around with a hosepipe.

Oh, and slugs also hate it, so get rid of 2 pests with one sprinkle Smile

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 16/02/2011 19:28

UKSky - my (currently housecat - but will be allowed out sometimes in a few weeks times) cat isn't bothered by ground coffee - I'mm always chasing him off my worktop sniffing around the spilled ground coffee

toeragsnotriches · 16/02/2011 19:36

Oh it's horrible. Clearing up the rank cat shit in my garden, especially while pregnant, is my worst job in the house. Friendly cats I don't mind so much but in our new place they're all massive ugly vicious bloody predators who put off all the birds too.

Chilli powder (the massive packs you can buy in Asda) worked a bit. As did spraying the the hose. But I think we'll get a dog in the summer so that'll do nicely too probably!

toeragsnotriches · 16/02/2011 19:39

But poisoning them? Seriously? Just saw this up thread. What kind of psycho does someone need to be??

catwhiskers10 · 16/02/2011 19:42

Most cats go as far away from their own home as possible. I have 2 cats and I don't know where they go but several other neighbourhood cats use my garden. I'd rather clean up my own cats mess than others but it's almost impossible to control where cats go unless you keep them in the house with a litter tray.

Vallhala · 16/02/2011 19:47

Sorry newwave, did you take my sole, three word comment on here personally?

Only I don't recall addressing it to anyone in particular.

But, if the cap fits...

Choosing to own an outdoor cat is selfish in most cases IMO. It will obviously crap in your neighbours' gardens which is disgusting for all of us and dangerous to pregnant women.

Cats belong on farms where they can roam freely without restricting other people from using their own gardens.

Every time I wanted to let my kids out in my garden last summer, I had to shovel the cat poo out of the back flower bed. Previously, other people's cat ownership caused me to spend money on Olbas oil (expensive as you have to keep putting it down), to turf over one of my flowerbeds as it was right next to my parking space and I couldn't get my DCs out of the car without stepping in the poo cats did in it, not to mention the cat spikes I paid for and installed on top of my garden gate.

Cats are a pest - own them and you are causing a hazard to pregnant women and causing wasted time and money to other people. Simply antisocial (in most cases).
