could make their own gardens more appealing for their cats so said cats don't come and poo in my vegetable garden and use their own instead?

It drives me up the wall. We end up have to put netting everywhere and sticks and upturned crtaes and still the poxy things manage to dig up everything and poo. Angry

So, AIBU

YANBU. Next time next door's cat digs up our veg patch to use as a toilet (ruining all DH's hard work) I'm tempted to send our two dogs over to her garden to do the same to her flower bed,

WoTmania · 14/02/2011 13:48

Right, I'm going to have and citrus/olbas oil scented garden :)
NerdayFace - I could dress all 3 sprogs up and send them out to shit in the neighbours garden Grin

JarethTheGoblinKing · 14/02/2011 14:02

Ooh, I've got some orange essence in the cupboard which may do the trick, I'll have to sprinkle that all over the place and see if it makes a difference Grin

BabyDubsEverywhere · 14/02/2011 14:05

We are currently cat proofing our garden so our kitten wont be able to get out of it. But tbh i am doing this for his benefit as i dont want him run over etc. Neighbours would have to like it or lump it really, cats have the right to roam and the onus is on you to look after your property. I have a few cats using the front garden, takes minutes to clear it up. cant really see the big deal.

Yes i know i wont be popular, sorry Smile

Annpan88 · 14/02/2011 14:07

the only way to stop your garden being defiled by cats is to get a cat. It won't poo in its garden and other cats won't poo in it once its established its territory. However. you don't seem like a cat person...

idobelieveinfairies · 14/02/2011 14:12

I do sympathise, isn't nice to find cat poop in your garden when you haven't got a cat.

But there isn't anything cat owners can do about it, they can't be trained.

I have more to worry about with the hunt hounds running all over my garden, the cows that get in and also the escapee horses that I find littering the place than cats.

With cats, you either have to suck it up or pick it up (and send it back to the owners in little plastic bags). You could get one of your own either?

WoTmania · 14/02/2011 18:10

Annpan - not so much 'not a cat person' as a chronically allergic to most animals person'

BabyDubs (are you usually babieseverywhere?) - It doesn't 'take minutes' to clear up besides which, why should I have to clear up someone else's cat's poo? AND when diggin to take a dump the dig up my vegetables sometimes too.

Or you could obsess over it and become angry either Smile

Babieseverywhere · 15/02/2011 12:46

No BabyDubs is not me :)

WoTmania · 16/02/2011 13:05

oooh, okay :) That's nice to know. I wonderedd if maybe you'd namechanged. I'm thinking about bumping the extended BFers thread BTW :)

I think that nowadays many cats are being blamed for poo that is down to urban foxes!

Yet another cat thread :)

I wonder if nailing a dead cat to the tree at the bottom of the garden would deter them, may be worth a try.

Dont expect the selfish gits cat owners to give a toss about the damage caused to your gardens, they dont give a shit (if you will excuse the pun)

mamadiva · 16/02/2011 16:30

We have an awful problem with this as there seem to be about 10 cats in this street and the fences are only 3.5ft high and we are not allowed to extend them so easy picking for the buggers! Angry

We had to be strict with the lid of our sandpit because they would jump in as soon as it was left for a minute and bury their shit as well as the day we had one lying on a pile of autmun leaves in the tranpoline. Poor DS climbed through the enclosure and started to bounce only for a startled cat to hiss and lunge for him! Again this has now to be closed at all times!

Are there not some erm... semi poisonous which would make them itch or something to act as a detterant? Am seriously contemplating something radical because I am allergic and am sick of DS having to play in someone elses animals shit!

My Granpa told me he and his father used to line around the fence with tacs Shock

Arneb · 16/02/2011 16:43

mamadiva

line around the fence with tacs

You can buy strips of spikes to put on fences to keep cats out.

Let the DC out in the garden this afternoon - have not been out much this winter. Realised the lawn is in a bad state - more mud than grass and was full of partially buried cat shit Sad.

Obas oil does work, as does spray made from boiled orange/lemon peel but as soon as it rains or is wet the sent is washed away. Between the garden being full of cat shit and the walk to and from school smothered in dog shit, as well as the front garden, I am so fed up of other peoples pets Angry.

bellaella16 · 16/02/2011 16:45

YANBU. It maybe 'what cats do' but no one would condone letter a dog out in your garden to poo. Its disgusting and a serious health hazzard. Its awful to be putting in small plants and get a handful of cat poo.

Try getting a male dog to wee around the area, I also use a lot of small bamboo stakes in my front garden so they can't squat down. They like to go in the same places so you only need to concentrate where they have already been. A strong water pistol with a litte washing up liquid also works. And no I'm not sorry if this offends cat owners, would you like a dog doing in in your garden?

bellaella16 · 16/02/2011 16:48

Also when I had a small back garden I did fine one of those sonic cat deterrents worked a treat. They activate on a sensor and be sure to get one that changes frequency otherwise the cats get used to it. Again, they quickly learnt it was not a good place to hang out...

anonandlikeit · 16/02/2011 16:49

YANBU, they are a complete pain in the arse!
They should be kept on a long chain so they can only shit in their own garden.

I've tried everything and still the frigging creatures return to crap in my garden.

You wouldn't accept someones dog or child roaming in to your garden & crapping everywhere so why should we put up with it from a cat.

MrsSparkle · 16/02/2011 16:50

What do you suggest? A nappy for a cat maybe?

newwave · 16/02/2011 16:51

How about cat owners put the cats on a long lead tied to a stake in the garden so they can roam around (part) of their own garden but not enter other peoples gardens.

scotsgirl23 · 16/02/2011 16:55

Beautyspot, I can't tell if your post was intentional or misguided, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt....

Please do not, anyone, take that anti freeze suggestion seriously. It is highly toxic to cats and results in a slow and agonising death. And it won't deter them either, because they like the bloody stuff. Putting it down in your garden in such a way would undoubtedly be classed as animal cruelty too if anything happened as a result.

MrsSparkle · 16/02/2011 17:09

Back in October we lost (died) our 8 month old cat due to poisoning. The vet thinks it was anti freeze. The poor little fella did die a slow agonising deathSad My dd was crushed.

People can be so cruel.
