regarding disabled neighbour

tinyfishbigpond · 12/02/2011 11:13

I have just moved into an area where parking is very scarce. I have a parking port in my house (think garage without a door for those who aren't familiar with one).

There are 2 parking spaces opposite my house. These are angled so that the cars run parallel with the front of my house. The council has only put in spaces because any more would stop me from being about to get into and out of my parking space.

The past 2 nights I have had a car parked on double yellow lines opposite my house in a 'third' space. This means I am really struggling to get my car in and out. I went out yesterday because I saw the car arrive and explained this to my neighbour.

The neighbour point blankly refused to move stating she has a disabled badge and can park wherever she likes. And apparently for as long as she wants. Her husband came out and was really aggressive, mocking me for renting the house when he owns his and telling me he was going to complain to my landlord.

Are they allowed to leave their car overnight on double yellow lines and cause an obstruction? I thought the max time was 3 hours. They also have no clock displayed next to the badge.

AIBU or are they? I was hoping to sort it between ourselves but they were very aggressive and told me to get the council involved.

Greenarmy you are so narrow minded to think that way - it makes me so angry. My dad has one as he has cancer and undergoing treatment, but you would never know it looking at him and he can walk round the shops. My mum also has one as she is very unbalanced walking and falls easily. Once she is holding a trolley she is fine and could walk around a while. People like you judging my parents and others like that make me extremely Angry

valiumredhead · 12/02/2011 16:25

Yes, I always hold a trolley too Mrspennysworth - it really steadies me and I find it much easier that walking without one.

NinkyNonker · 12/02/2011 16:28

"Supplied on motability"...you do realise they still have to pay for it don't you greenarmy?

I fear I may be wasting words on the ignorant.

ragged · 12/02/2011 16:36

There have to be some people who abuse the Blue Badge system, it's inevitable. The abusers are the ones you lot should be directing your fury at, not at GreenArmy.

mycarscallednev · 12/02/2011 16:39

We have a blue badge, but you see, GA my son is 6, so you won't be able to SEE him either driving the car or indeed that he has a disability. What you can SEE however, is when he has walked any distance the PAIN this causes and the DISLOCATIONS to his knees and ankes look pretty rough too. Do you think that Blue Badges are just handed out? Oh, here, you look like you're a lazy bastard, have a blue badge. Think yourself lucky you don't need one.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 12/02/2011 17:05

Greenarmy My oh has a badge. You might see us at the local supermarket and him walking around it. What you wont see is that he will pay for that hour by not being able to get off the sofa for the rest of the day.

But sometimes its nice to feel like a 'normal' family for a little while. I am not sure what the type of car has got to do with it. Disabled people arent forced to drive turquoise three wheelers anymore you know.

We have a Picasso because we have loads of kids.

My OH cannot walk at all without severe pain. Once a year he goes to the Notting Hill Carnival and numbs the bit of himself that are not already numb with Rum and has a fucking good time. He then spends a week getting over it.

The year he doesnt go will be a year I take myself off to my room and have a bloody good cry.

You do NOT know. You can NOT tell. And C&P a bit of information to a thread full of people actually living with disability does not make you an expert.

MummieHunnie · 12/02/2011 17:28

I think I will go and have a chat with my gp about what he thinks of me getting a blue badge. I have struggled with accepting the disability in the first six months of diagnosis, my exh left for another women three months into that acceptance period, and I do get a little upset from time to time, I don't dwell on it much, I try and live my life as best I can, and enjoy the physical abilities I have, when I have them!

It really causes upset when ignorant people like Green Army make their comments. I was very disabled in the autumn, and after a summer of the kids being trapped in as I could not walk and I have no support, I manged to take them on holiday, the nastyness I had when abroad at the airport when I asked for wheelchair assistance, really upset me, I can walk short distances, if I had tried to walk to the distant plane, I would not have made it and I would have been crippled for months, It is just so upsetting, because I am not white haired or obviously disabled, it is like you are labelled lazy or pretending, I don't suppose carrying extra weight is a help as it gives ignornat people more reason to think their odd thoughts, it would not occur to them that as you are not as mobile you can't exercise as you once could, and that being stuck in causes you to comfort eat more! Hmm, one day Green Army you may be in this type of situation, I wonder how you will cope then!

ThePosieParker · 12/02/2011 17:35

GreenArmy is getting the abuse because he/she posted that half 'these people' don't need a blue badge and that no signs of disability means no disability and you can't have a nice car and be disabled.....just too many assumptions to ignore.

MummieHunnie....Gosh not disabled and overweight, how dare you? ShockWink

herbie....honestly one person with a bb saying she's overweight and now you with make up....next you'll be asking for human rights!

HeathcliffMoorland · 12/02/2011 18:24

I'm forgiving of genuine ignorance.

However, it makes me very angry when people have all the information and continue to make informed nasty comments.

madhairday · 12/02/2011 18:24

Ignore GA, everyone, it's not worth the hassle. Most people on MN understand about invisible disabilities and are thankfully human.

I'd have no problem, mostly, getting out of a Lotus Elise (I wish). But my lungs aren't in my legs, so that's probably why.

sweetgilly · 12/02/2011 18:28

GreenAmy

Oh do f^ck off.

GreenAmy · 12/02/2011 18:48

I think your being unfair on me.

If they are having such a good day that they can climb out of a tight sports car and walk around a super market then they should not be using a disabled spot.

If my neighbour can walk to the shops unaided and then to the pub in the evening why should the state pay for her to have a car, because she occasionally may have a bad day. What if these people become ill at the wheel of a car then?

It strikes me that in the UK that many more people have blue badges compared to abroad where they seem rare.

OK flame me for this too if you like, what is the thinking of letting people work for 16 hours a week. Surely if they can work for 16 hours they should not be allowed benefits.

It is beyond me! Anyone care to explain?

EauRouge · 12/02/2011 18:51

(Altogether now) Disabilities are not always visible.

Ignorance, on the other hand, is mercifully easy to spot.

valiumredhead · 12/02/2011 18:51

No.

sweetgilly · 12/02/2011 18:53

GreenAmy

Troll

GreenAmy · 12/02/2011 18:57

sweetgilly I think you need to change your name

BigFatSpider · 12/02/2011 18:59

No, Greenarmy, you need to change your attitude.

Mumcentreplus · 12/02/2011 19:02

GreenAmy you are really short-sighted and judgemental..you want to be flamed because you know what you are saying is unreasonable..my Mum gets help from disabilty and the Motability scheme..you really need to grow up imo..and stop being Envy of people who have a long term disability ..it's pathetic

Mumcentreplus · 12/02/2011 19:03

they get a badge they get help buying a car..lame

ThePosieParker · 12/02/2011 19:04

We're nicer and have better human rights and compassion than other nations, we also have the NHS which is probably something to do with bb being free....possibly charged for abroad.

GreenArmy only a complete cunt would nitpick with someone with a disability using a bb because the one day they were fighting fit in 100 they still used their badge., What would you like to see? People falling out of cars? A diagnosis tattooed to their foreheads?

What goes around comes around....you should be careful.

valiumredhead · 12/02/2011 19:05

LOL @ 'lame' Grin (and I am allowed to laugh as I AM lame!)

ThePosieParker · 12/02/2011 19:06

I must say I'm really envious of the bloke with chronic arthritis down the road....fair enough he's in crippling pain some days but when that fucker is out washing his car smiling (the nerve) away I think 'I wish I was disabled so I could have his badge and disabled bay' outside my house.Hmm

valiumredhead · 12/02/2011 19:07

As someone said earlier - you can have my BB as long as you have my disability too.

(that might be from another thread actually, there is another similar one today as well)
