Thank God for this man walking past...but really shouldn't all parents be thinking hard about having these kind of dogs in the home?

labradors are bred to retrieve not hunt.

jonicomelately · 11/02/2011 10:13

I'm glad you said you don't think all labradors are dangerous midori.

I can't understand why people are defending staffies etc by slating labradors Confused

I'm not slating labradors. And yes they were bred for retrieval, which is part of a hunt no?

We owned a failed gun dog, who was great. I adored her and she was brilliant with the dc. She was a big softy. A bugger with birds and other game though.

I'm pointing out that any dog can be dangerous in the wrong hands, even the lovable family favourites.

A labrador can just as easily be aggressive as a bull breed. And is powerful enough to do as much damage as a bull breed, if they chose to. The fact is most don't become aggressive, because they are not appealing to the sort of person who wants an aggressive dog.

Banning 'status dogs' will only lead to other breeds becoming status dogs. As a large, highly trainable breed a lab would be near the top of the list.

midori1999 · 11/02/2011 10:24

I don't think all of any breed is dangerous and I think dogs that are dangerous are made that way by humans,m either by being badly bred or by poor/the wrong treatment.

I think most dogs (regardless of breed) are inherantly good natured and that is why, in fact, more dog attacks on humans don't happen.

Our staff cross, despite a very bad start before we had him, which included being bred in the most appalling conditions, 'kicked around the house' for what was normal puppy behaviour at only 11 weeks old and never having left his owners home at all prior to 14 weeks, so not seen another dog since weaning (at 5-6 weeks, far too early!), not seen a human out of the home etc loves people and is super keen to please. Once we move and are less rural and so have easier access to classes etc I plan to eventually do obedience and agility with him, it will really suit him.

DooinMeCleanin · 11/02/2011 10:25

CFAW's dog very cute btw.

jonicomelately · 11/02/2011 10:26

I thought your post was misleading Dooin. I get your arguments. I don't think anybody disputes it's the humans not the dog's fault. I just can't understand why the labrador seems to have been singled out by so many people for critisism when they are such fabulous dogs.

retriving the kill isnt the same as attacking and killing itself so yes while its part of a hunt it isnt being bred to go out and kill.

jonicomelately · 11/02/2011 10:28

OK. I get it. Labs are nasty vicous aggressive dogs and staffies are marvellous.

jonicomelately · 11/02/2011 10:29

'vicious'

But the lab also was not bred specifically to be calm with people, inc. strangers even in the middle of a fight, which the bull breeds were. That is the point I was trying to make. Bull breeds that showed even a hint of aggression to a person were not bred from, because it would not have been useful for their purpose. Unlike the Lab, whose only purpose was to retrieve game and who didn't need to be as calm and trusting with people as the bull breeds. It is this breeding that has made the bull breeds so good with people.

That does not mean that I think Labradors are dangerous. They are not. But nor is a Bull breed or a GSD or a Rotty. Not if they are trained and cared for adequately.

The reason I am using a lab as an example is because they are often hailed as the ultimate family dog if you have children, when in reality they can be aggressive if they are not handled correctly, as can any breed.

TheButterflyCollector · 11/02/2011 10:39

CFAW, that's one beauutiful dog. :)

Joni, Labs are being cited as an example of how any dog can be aggressive and that breed specifics are misleading because they are considered by the average Joe (and plenty of the ignorant who have spouted pro-BSL crap on here over time) as nice steady family dogs who wouldn't hurt a fly. The point is that not all Labs are nice friendly family dogs, just as not all SBTs or PBTs are agggressive and one cannot in all honesty, conscience or with genuine knowledge of dogs claim otherwise.

I can add to singling Labs out. I wouldn't leave mine with your children... but I've have no fear in leaving them with my late SBT cross, the SBTs I've fostered or my b&t German Shepherd. Yet if you believe the crap some will spout it should be the Lab which is family friendly and the SBTs and GSD you should fear.

MrSpoc · 11/02/2011 10:39

I do not think anyone is attackinh labs. All they are saying is that the big family favourite such as the lab can also become very agressive if not trained, treated correctly.

I like all dogs and have my favourites such as Staffies, siberian Huskies but i would also love a chocolate lab.

TheButterflyCollector · 11/02/2011 10:41

And btw, my Lab has his attitude problem thanks to having suffered long-term abuse before I met him, as is so very often the case with temperamental dogs.

BeerTricks - Staffies can also be mistaken for other breeds. so the reason scrotes choose them in order to look hard.
