AIBU to think that MNHQ should not delete threads, which are deemed controversial? This site is supposed to be largely unmoderated and I would like the freedom to discuss what I want to discuss, without the thread getting pulled.

MNHQ have the facility to delete posts which break the rules and that is good enough.

I am especially annoyed because I had just typed out a long post, when it disappeared

Bloody hell, I only went to get DS a drink! What happened??????

lessnarkypuffin · 09/02/2011 17:10

? What went?

They've explained before that they will delete some. Can't be arsed searching to link but the reasons sounded fine at the time Grin

LaWeaselMys · 09/02/2011 17:10

If this was the traveller one, I think the suggestion is that asking where they (as a whole ethnic group) get their money from - is racist in itself and so the whole thread had to get lopped.

If it was started again with a different OP along the lines of "are travellers wealthier than other people" it would probably be alright? I'm not sure.

LaWeaselMys · 09/02/2011 17:11

Totally speculating - it may have been started by a known banned person, which has happened a few times recently.

I think MN has always been clear about not allowing anything unlawful and that thread had too many racist comments on it.

Psammead · 09/02/2011 17:13

They generally give a reason a few mins before they delete.

donkeyderby · 09/02/2011 17:13

whereas the thread in which lots of posters said they thought lots of parents made up ADHD, and on which someone said that elderly people should be got rid of once they became infirm, stayed.

I don't care about threads being pulled but why treat one minority group with more reverence than others?

lessnarkypuffin · 09/02/2011 17:14

'Blah, descend into a bunfight, blah, known trolls.'

It was something like that ^

twirlymum · 09/02/2011 17:17

From what I remember about the OP, it was specifically about where those particular gypsies got their money from?
That's how I read it anyway.
altinkum are you referring to the posts that were deleted? I didn't get to see them.

twirlymum · 09/02/2011 17:18

From the TV show I mean.

spikeycow · 09/02/2011 17:20

From what I saw people on the traveller thread were questionning certain practices, giving their own experiences, and drumming home the point that not all travellers are the same.

NancyDrewHadaClue · 09/02/2011 17:21

twirly it didn't. It asked a general question in derogatory terms.

Posts were deleted and a reminder about appropriateness was given.

There were some posters on the thread that were frankly shit stirring.

Now I expect this thread to disappear too Smile

MrSpoc · 09/02/2011 17:21

it was not a racist topic. i thought it was interesting and i agree that asking questions is not in its self racist.

MNHQ were very "YABU" and should have my first Biscuit

twirlymum · 09/02/2011 17:22

Oh, maybe I read it wrong.

fedupofnamechanging · 09/02/2011 17:22

It is the traveller one I am referring to. Am more than happy for individual posts to be removed if they break the rules, but the conversation was starting to evolve into a discussion on the treatment of the women. I would have liked to continue it.

Must admit, I didn't notice who started the thread. I often don't look, so don't know if it was a troll.

MNHQ didn't give a reason a few minutes before deletion, they just reminded people to be aware of the rules.

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 09/02/2011 17:22

Now hides this thread.

bupcakesandcunting · 09/02/2011 17:24

I didn't read it because the title sounded a little bit DM. It might not have been. Don't think that things should be pulled (except personal attack threads or just downright offensive) especially threads like that one about the travellers. People might end up learning stuff.

Yes, the role of women would have been interesting to discuss. Maybe it's because the intentions were to be offensive and a few people got into it, they had to delete it. But threads evolve and I think the main thing is that prejudice is challenged.

LessNarkyPuffinWithFakeBeard · 09/02/2011 17:26

There are threads on the tv show if you want to discuss the role of women.

MrSpoc · 09/02/2011 17:26

I also did not see the relation to a woman leaving work to bring up her children (with her own free will)
to a traveller woman giving up work to clean all the time. I dont understand why they still cannot work. Was seen by some as the same thing?

My thoughts are so that they do not get opinions of thier own and start to see how things could be better/different for them.

LessNarkyPuffinWithFakeBeard · 09/02/2011 17:26

Race hate laws apply online.

Anonymousbird · 09/02/2011 17:32

I don't see how that topic in itself is racist, though suspect it may have generated some tastless posts (which can and should be deleted).

But if the thread is getting out of control, I suppose they need to have the "last resort" (and it should be the last resort) of pulling the whole thing.

fuzzypicklehead · 09/02/2011 17:33

Ahhhhh, these situations are why I started a thraed to ask for a "thread graveyard" in site stuff. That way MN could post their reason for deleting a thread, and everyone would know where to look instead of having lots of "What happened to..." threads.
