AIBU to think that MNHQ should not delete threads, which are deemed controversial? This site is supposed to be largely unmoderated and I would like the freedom to discuss what I want to discuss, without the thread getting pulled.

MNHQ have the facility to delete posts which break the rules and that is good enough.

I am especially annoyed because I had just typed out a long post, when it disappeared

The post that I was in the middle of typing when it got deleted was about my friend at school who was from a travelling family who had settled. She was first sent to school at 13, so had no chance of doing GCSE's etc, because she still had to learn how to read and write. It made me cross that she was deprived of her right to an education and equal opportunity that everyone else gets automatically. Her brothers are also trapped in a way of life that they might not have chosen, had they been educated. I think the state has a duty to protect these children. Also my friend's father was an abusive twat, and being kept away from school, meant that my friend had nowhere to turn. I think it's outrageous that society tolerates this

karma that's how the initiative I worked on came about.
I worked in a secondary school that was very close to a settled site. A few of the boys (and a couple of girls) started aged 11, completely illiterate.
They simply could not cope with a large bustling school, having to find there classrooms for every subject etc, so the council paid a lot of money for two fully equipped portakabins to go on the site to be used as a school.
The rest I mentioned on the previous thread!

There? There??? Their, God, I'm so ashamed

fedupofnamechanging · 09/02/2011 17:46

I saw your post twirlymum. Sorry it didn't work out. My friend is okay now. She went to adult literacy classes, passed her driving test etc, but she won't have the career she could have had and that is a shame.

Karma this what makes me so very cross.

I've taught traveller children and believe they're being let down due to the "culture" issue.I don't think any other culture is allowed to get away with this.I don't know if it's the secrecy issue or if the powers that be are just too afraid to take on a community and a site full of men.

It makes me mad that as a nation we'll travel all the way to Pakistan to rescue girls in a forced marriage but traveller girls on our own doorstep just aren't worthy a fuss being made about.

twirlymum · 09/02/2011 17:57

That's good to hear karma

Ohjustshootmenow · 09/02/2011 18:26

Oh that explains why i couldn't find it then :(

caughtinanet · 09/02/2011 18:37

I'm disappointed its gone as well, aside from some comments that were deleted before I saw there were lots of posts that weren't offensive or racist and if it had been allowed to continue I think we could have learnt something.

I don't know if any travellers post here but I'd be really interested in finding out more about their way of life especially how it effects children and women.

twirlymum · 09/02/2011 18:50

MilaMae I completely agree
