I posted this on the Politics section but it deserves a much wider audience:

www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/feb/07/tax-city-heist-of-century?commentpage=last#end-of-comments

Quite possibly the best newspaper article I've ever read.

So, if I'm correct on this, David Cameron is planning to to shift taxes under the tax act so that his rich and ultra-rich friends benefit and middle/working classes are squeezed til the pips squeak.

I'm hopeless at large scale finances and politics BTW.

JenniL1977 · 08/02/2011 21:15

That's a pretty good article. George Monbiot is fantastic, he came to my bookshop a couple of years ago and his talk was amazing.

There isn't enough space on the whole Internet for me to articulate the rage I feel about the way we have been and are being fucked over by this government and its croneyism (sic?). Or the last government, come to think of it.

granted · 08/02/2011 21:17

Correct, ChilledChick.

"Tories look after the rich and screw everyone else."

Quelle Surprise...

I wonder how many terms they'd need before they felt safe enough to help the poor by providing large institutions for them to live in, where they will be given manual labour, beaten daily and told that they are poor because they lack moral virtue of industriousness...

Its quite scary really

coolascucumber · 08/02/2011 21:31

Each day brings some new outrage. Condems are morally bankrupt. It beggars belief that they can get away with this shit.

ItsGraceAgain · 08/02/2011 21:31

Thanks, but I almost wish I hadn't read it. I'd leave this country now if I wasn't too poor to go anywhere :(

Makes an even bigger joke out of today's "surprise" tiny levy on the banks, doesn't it?
Surprise my arse. My bank sent out a letter in December, warning of harsher penalty fees from the beginning of March. That'll more than cover the little bit of extra tax.

LaWeaselMys · 08/02/2011 21:33

My bank has started charging me to have an account with them.

Fuckers.

Can't close it and move elsewhere until I clear the over draft unfortunately.

wheredidyoulastseeit · 08/02/2011 21:34

This is just terrible, so glad you brought it into AIBU you could expect it of the Tories but why are the Liberals rolling over as well - oh yes Clegg must be sucking up to get a seat at the table

marmy55 · 08/02/2011 21:34

cos gordon did such a fantastic job we are all in the land of milk and honey now

figcake · 08/02/2011 21:34

Thanks for posting - brilliant article.

JoyceBarnaby · 08/02/2011 21:46

Unfortunately, Marmy, whether Gordon Brown did a crap job or not (or indeed Tony Blair) doesn't actually make any difference to whether this sort of tax policy is going to be popular. Many people don't like what Labour did but that doesn't mean they agree with everything (or anything) the Tories are doing either.

KarmaDevil · 08/02/2011 21:51

Holds head in hands If I had the money I leave this country in a flash, oh the fucking irony! I am dreading what he's going to do to us over the next 4 years. May as well just bend over now. [fuckinghateCameronsmiley]

KarmaDevil · 08/02/2011 21:52

Ooops that wasn't supposed to be in bold.

LoopyLoopsPoopaScoop · 08/02/2011 21:53

There's now only one option. That's voting Green. It will have to become a serious contender.

granted · 08/02/2011 21:54

Might make a good name change?

OP posts:
granted · 08/02/2011 21:55

Voting Green is good. I really don't want another revolution. Revolutions, on the whole, aren't very nice.

begonyabampot · 08/02/2011 21:57

We are leaving, getting our arses in gear now. Roll on Aug.

lessnarkypuffin · 08/02/2011 22:00

How often do you think they let Nick Clegg out of the gimp cage?

happiestblonde · 08/02/2011 22:00

Oh god it's George bloody Monbiot, please do not take this shite seriously.

TemperTrapped · 08/02/2011 22:01

Have the rats started appearing yet? Do I need to jump ship?

Thanks for the link.

MyHouseIsASquashAndASqueeze · 08/02/2011 22:02

Really fucking scary. I've tried to play down my DH's rants about the Tories for months (because of wishful thinking) and this makes me want to cry.

Thanks for posting.

MyHouseIsASquashAndASqueeze · 08/02/2011 22:03

happiestblonde

Some of George Monbiot's writing is rhetoric which if you don't agree with it I can understand you labeling it as shite. However, you can't really argue with the numbers, or if you can, say that instead of an ad hominem dismissal of the man who wrote them.

JoyceBarnaby · 08/02/2011 22:04

Why not, happiestblonde?
