4x4's

Is my DP being unreasonable when he say's that most 'school run' mum's wouldn't have a clue how to extract themselves using the four wheel drive facility on their Chelsie tractors, should the need arise? If he is indeed correct, then why spend silly amounts on vehicles with this facility?

He is right. (Its Chelsea btw)

They have them because it is seen as a status symbol, not a necessity.

curlymama · 01/02/2011 18:54

He is right in my case, sorry!

But as 4x4's go, mine is very small. I bought my car because I like it, I don't feel the need to justify that to anyone.

I like it for lots of reasons other than the fact that it has 4 wheel drive. My car, my choice, nobody elses business.

DaftApeth · 01/02/2011 18:55

I suspect lots of school run dads would have a problem too!

NinkyNonker · 01/02/2011 18:56

I used to have a small 4x4, and used it in that mode off road regularly. But yanbu to say many wouldn't.

woollyideas · 01/02/2011 18:57

If you're silly enough to buy one for the school run, you're probably silly enough not to know how to use it.

Have a look at the stop urban 4x4s website. And get yerself some fake parking tickets to slap on the silly fools that drive them..

Catsmamma · 01/02/2011 18:58

In the recent snow, me and my ds1 were in and out to town, him in a micra, me in a seicento

We live in the back of beyond, no gritted roads, not quite single track roads

A friend's father could not even manage to get his posh 4wd nissan off the drive onto his gritted road

I have had 4wd vehicles too, but currently cannot contemplate the running costs!!

So your dh is not BU!

Alouiseg · 01/02/2011 19:00

Oh cock off and insult someone else for a change. I spent the recent snowy spell driving around some very grateful neighbours, friends and rellies. In my 4x4.

Several people had got rid of their 4x4's recently and were planning on getting new ones because of the cold spell. Ungritted roads in the back of beyond need 4x4's.

Gogopops · 01/02/2011 19:00

A lot of the mums were very smug driving around in the recent snow though!!

Mymblesson · 01/02/2011 19:02

Ungritted roads in the back of beyond need 4x4's.

I don't think anyone's disputing that. Are they needed in Chelsea, though?

Alouiseg · 01/02/2011 19:05

...or Chelsie Hmm

ambarth · 01/02/2011 19:06

What have people got against 4x4s?

Alouiseg · 01/02/2011 19:08

Big bloody chips on their shoulders!

shushpenfold · 01/02/2011 19:09

Alouiseg - why the insults?

amarone · 01/02/2011 19:09

Jealousy I guess... Unless we're talking the tree huggers.

thenightsky · 01/02/2011 19:11

I've had 4x4s in the past due to living in the sticks. I had to get shut of them due to cost. This year I have just put proper winter tyres on my little old Honda Jazz and it has performed better in the snow and ice than my 4x4 ever did.

Mymblesson · 01/02/2011 19:13

Ah, there's the real problem with driving in snow and ice. In Poland 4x4s are quite rare and people get around when it's -30C in their ordinary cars because they have snow tyres.

woollyideas · 01/02/2011 19:14

Jealousy Grin Grin Grin

Yeah, obviously...

Alouiseg · 01/02/2011 19:15

I'm so bored with the same old 4x4 bashing. I also think that the op's question is puerile, badly worded and unoriginal.

The assumption that a mere female wouldn't have a clue how to drive her own car is frankly, insulting.

We could just have a list:

4x4 bashing
Sahm v Wohm
Breast or Bottle
Private v State
Elcs

I tend to avoid most of these threads but the specific referral to a womans driving ability made me dive in.

shushpenfold · 01/02/2011 19:17

LOL - fair enough, but you can do much better than 'cock off' - come on, put your back into it woman!

Megglevache · 01/02/2011 19:18

I like mine and drive it well, I can park in a space the size of a match box. You should see the twat of a man in the mahoosive Range Rover Sport small-cock who works at the estate agents, he cannot drive or park it for toffee Grin

If you can't park a big one you'd probably be shite parking anything TBH.

Alouiseg · 01/02/2011 19:18

I like "Cock Off". It gets the message over too ;-)

HecateQueenOfWitches · 01/02/2011 19:18

Yes. He's being unreasonable because he is suggesting that women are poor drivers.

fiveisanawfullybignumber · 01/02/2011 19:21

Alouiseg, you've forgotten
Baby & child parking
Pierced ears on babies

amarone · 01/02/2011 19:21

Haven't seen a good 4x4 bashing thread for a while.

So what do people have against them?

Apart from the perceived lack of driving ability of the female driver...

DublinMammy · 01/02/2011 19:21

Perhaps the OP could tell her husband to cock off and that might solve this for everyone?
