Sorry please excuse my raging PMT!

Friend and her little boy came round for lunch, little boy is a couple of months younger than DD (who is 21m). We sat them both at DD's little table and I grabbed two of the catch-all bibs that hang around on the end of my counter. Just grabbed the top two without - turned out to be purple and pink.

I went to pop them on the toddlers while my friend filled her son's cup, then she turns to me and says "Sorry can he have a blue one? He's a boy, I don't like him to wear a girl's bib"

I dug out a green one, she was happy with that. Didn't say anything (only recently made friends, didn't want to ruffle feathers and as the mum of a DD, I'm unfamiliar with gender colour preferences). But later thought "it's a bib, it won't make his nuts drop off if her wears a 'girls colour' one!"

Strange, no? Please feel free to enlighten me!

Pink used to be worn exclusively by boys didn't it? Girls wearing pink is a relatively new thing.

But yes a boy in pink is now a sign of the Apocalypse. We're already got Cameron and Clegg in an unholy union and the abomination that is Take Me Out on television, this last abomination, a boy in pink, is the final horseman so to speak. It MUST be avoided if the world is to survive.

Witchofthenorth · 01/02/2011 12:05

Oh my good lord that is hilarious! Didn't you know that wearing pink turns you gay hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

Puleese! Sounds Like when my mil was distraught at ds playing with DD kitchen (and wearing the apron) I didn't show her the picture of him taken the day he was wearing my high heels with his police dress up PSML ( very village people) . Some people are very silly billies! :)

mawbroon · 01/02/2011 12:07

YANBU

DS1 had a real pink phase. He had pink jammies and always chose the pink cup/plate/whatever.

I didn't send him out in pink clothes though, because I didn't want other kids taking the piss. And why would they take the piss? Cos they've learned that pink is "wrong" from people like the OPs friend.

FindingStuffToChuckOut · 01/02/2011 12:08

poor kid!

Mymblesson · 01/02/2011 12:12

Our son loves pink and has some pink socks. He also likes wearing his mum's shoes.

The only person this seems to bother is my mother.

mumcha · 01/02/2011 12:12

You used to be able to buy t-shirts saying "man enough to wear pink" from next i think it was .No one bats an eyelid if a girl is put in blue clothes so why should they care if a boy wears pink? Its just so silly .Also my 10 yr old has pink football boots is he also gay lol ?

Memoo · 01/02/2011 12:12

YABU its a well known fact that if boys wear pink they will turn into girls and their willies will fall off!

springbokdoc · 01/02/2011 12:14

That made me laugh although terribly sad that he'll probably learn alot of gender stereotyping.

When I was in a toy shop, overgeard a mom saying to her little girl that she couldn't have a toy because 'that's only for boys' (I think it was a pirate costume)

ziva · 01/02/2011 12:18

BABIES DON'T CARE!!

your friend needs a serious wake up call.i have friends who (shock, horror) puts tights on their baby boys during the winter cause it was so cold.

mumcha · 01/02/2011 12:19

It must be the older generations that care because 1 xmas my mum had bought my then 4yr old a kitchen and was taking it out of her boot of the car when the old woman down the street asked her,who it was for?.My mum said one of the grandkids and she replied sure you have no grand daughters lol.Never mind all the top chefs are men .

MrSpoc · 01/02/2011 12:21

I would not like my kids to wear pink not because anything is wrong with it but more about other kids picking on them.

Also my MIL is always trying to buy my son Dolls and other realy girly stuff - I have explained that if she wants to buy him a doll she can buy him an action man type thing.

My son does have a henry hoover, kitchen and sweeeping brush that he loves but nothing pink and fluffy. no thanks,.

MissyMorrison87 · 01/02/2011 12:24

Haha whats she gonna do if her next child is a girl? Keep them seperate with seperate color toys and clothes??

"No darling you cant play with your brothers blue toys, they are for boys only. Touch them and you will suddenly grow a pair"

What a weirdo!

Witchofthenorth · 01/02/2011 12:26

IT'S ONLY A COLOUR I don't understand what the diff is, I would get it if it was a pink frilly flowery lacey number but not just because it is pink!

wonderstuff · 01/02/2011 12:26

PMSL

So sad these days that there is such gender stereotyping, really quite depressing.

charitygirl · 01/02/2011 12:27

This all comes from a tremendous disadain for girls and women. Makes me feel ill.

ENormaSnob · 01/02/2011 12:27

Pathetic.

Wonder what she would have done if the green bib wasn't available?

Witchofthenorth · 01/02/2011 12:27

Although some boys might like pink flowery Lacey numbers........maybe the ones whose nuts fell off cos the wore a pink bib ROFL......

wonderstuff · 01/02/2011 12:29

But MrSpoc it was a bib, for lunch, no one was going to pick on him!!

MrSpoc · 01/02/2011 12:34

a bib i wouldnt mind but a barbie doll for a boy or pink sleepsuites for boys is a no go. the only reason i have is that other children will take the mick out of my children because of this and there will be no way to stop it.

WriterofDreams · 01/02/2011 12:35

My mother in law thought it was very bad of us to take a photograph of DS with a pink soother!! Luckily she didn't pass her weirdness onto my DH, who once dressed up for Hallowe'en as a fairy, wearing pink fishnet tights, a tutu and pink glittery makeup!

Bogeyface · 01/02/2011 12:37

Does she have a nice girly pink bib for use when you visit her?!

SkipToTheEnd · 01/02/2011 12:38

Someone told me off for giving my DS a pink balloon once. It's crazy!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 01/02/2011 12:40

I frequently dress my 1yo ds2 in dd's old pink sleepsuits.
mind you dd does then pretend he is a girl and call him 'Susie' so I can't claim to be breaking down stereotypes much Blush

Blacksand · 01/02/2011 12:58

Last Saturday there was a second hand book stall in our local square. A boy of about 6 picked up Black Beauty - his dad told him to put it back as it was a girl's book....

It made me feel sad and angry and DH had to steer me away from saying something (yes, i would have looked like a loon). It is a great book all about how we treat animals etc. and tbh even if he has picked up a really pink and glittery, (obviously aimed at girls) book like Flower Fairies his dad should have let him have it.

Angry - hmmmph

ragged · 01/02/2011 12:59

DS3yo wears a pink cycle helmet and rides in a pink childseat on my MTB.
For Halloween I put him in a pink fairy dress.
He was so cute... and still very obviously a BOY.
My 11yo DS says that anything pink is fine for boys to wear except shorts/trousers/hair bands.

There is a transgender youth living locally who confuses me, I must admit: long hair, makeup, glittery shoes, feminine tracksuit, man's walk, flat chest, no hips and obvious facial hair. Not that I mind, but I am quietly very nosy curious about his/her story.
