to think that "fat shops" like Evans and Ann Harvey don't do their customers any favours by making their sizes much larger than they usually are?

Was in London last week, nipped into both. Tried on jeans in Evans, even a size 16 was too big (and I am SO not a 16). Went into Horrible Ann Harvey, Polyester Queen, and overheard the woman saying to a customer, "No, the sizes come up much bigger than in regular shops. If you're a size 16 in M & S, there won't be anything here to fit you."

Is this not going to lull porkers (I am one, I am allowed to say that) into a false sense of their own size, if they think, oh I am "only" a size 16, which is not too bad, when actually they are probably a 22+ in "normal" shops?

KalokiMallow · 31/01/2011 01:12

It's lovely isn't it Mummie :(

MummieHunnie · 31/01/2011 01:13

I am not a size 10, and I have never had any body random, shout abuse picking on any physical part of me from a car!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/01/2011 01:14

Blimey... poor OP. I get your humour, didn't see anything offensive in your OP.

I can't understand though why anybody who is that sensitive about their weight/size/shape should make a beeline for a thread about 'fat shops'? Hmm

Get a grip some of you and stop projecting your interpretations of the word 'porkers' onto the OP.... and stop telling people what they can and can't post for goodness sakes, it's pathetic!

Jaquelinehyde · 31/01/2011 01:15

Mummie I live in a very nice area yet when I travel into the closest town I am regularly abused. Fatty, fatso, porky, fat bitch, disgusting whale are just a selection of what I have been called. Normally by silly little boys or girls. But the abuse that hurts most is the abuse that comes from middle class, middle aged women, not as brazen but twice as cutting.

KalokiMallow · 31/01/2011 01:16

Surely us "porkers" are more likely to need "fat shops" so more likely to read threads about them? Hmm

penelopestitsdropped · 31/01/2011 01:16

interpretations?

so what does the word porkers mean if not referring to pigs?

I am quite happy to be educated here because my understanding is that the OP was referring to herself as a pig

Jaquelinehyde · 31/01/2011 01:17

Lying if you read the whole thread you may understand the discussion a little better.

Jaquelinehyde · 31/01/2011 01:21

Right off to bed. Night night all.

applesandcider · 31/01/2011 01:31

Wondering if I am a porker!! I have slim legs and bum and probably apple shaped, but I am a singer and have an enourmous rib cage, (but sadly not big bangers!) Size 12/14 in M&S trousers, but 18 in tops - size 16 in Hobbs, Monsoon, White Stuff and numerous others, but at Wallis, Top Shop, Caroline Charles, Zara and Next nothing fits. Evans size 16 just flaps around me. Don't you just get pissed off if you're not a perfect 10/12!

I am a 40 - 42 A bra size - no high street shops seem to understand that measurement!

KalokiMallow · 31/01/2011 01:39

This is the way I see it, the OP may be happy to refer to herself as a 'porker', but I imagine she wouldn't be thrilled at a random stranger calling her that, agreed? And I assume none of you would be telling her she was looking for offence?

In the OP she talks about 'porkers', that is plural. Eg. More than one, and as I assume the OP is one person not many, she is referring to others. In context of this thread those others are anyone who shops in 'fat shops'. So are they unreasonable for not wanting to be called porkers?

Northernlurker · 31/01/2011 08:06

LOving the idea that 'porkers' can have anything other than a negative connotation Hmm

ManateeEquineOhara · 31/01/2011 09:13

Well actually...there is a S&M feeder/feedee positive connotation to the term 'Porker'. Being stuffed and kept in a pen before a slaughter performance is actually a fantasy for some feedees.

And of course pigs are quite cute too.

Evans sizes have never just followed on from other high street shops, they've always been bigger. "Plus size" specialists cut differently, I think they probably use a fit model who is about a 22, so she would have flesh in places a size 12 wouldn't. Many people who wear size 16 would be shaped more like a big 12 than a small 22 if you see what I mean?
The trick is trying to find out which shops uses fit models of a similar shape to you. It's getting more and more tricky as shops use so many different factories and patterns now. Making your own stuff is also a reliable way of getting stuff that fits, but do beware that I wear a 10/12 in high street fashion and a 14/16 from a dressmaker's pattern! They still use the traditional measurements taking a size 12 as 34-26-36 and size up and down apprx 2 inches per size. I like vintage when I can find decent affordable stuff as I find a vintage size 16 fits much better than a new size 12.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/01/2011 09:40

Jacqueline... Why would you assume I hadn't read the thread? Hmm

I disagree with those posters taking issue with what's in the OP, I happen to agree with it. I do think that the outsize shops patronise their customers by being way out on the sizing. Some customers might like it, some might not notice and some might be annoyed about it... it's a fact that the sizing is way out in comparison to sizing from other shops.

You can refer to yourself in anyway you like, that's up to you. OP didn't call anybody specifically a porker, it was a general term. Whether you find it offensive or not, it's not a swear word and you don't have the right to dictate what other people can or can't say.

confuddledDOTcom · 31/01/2011 10:30

"Is this not going to lull porkers"

That's not calling herself a porker, that's calling anyone who needs these shops porkers.

Penelope's name is a ridiculous example. She is describing her body in a technical way, they've dropped. She's not saying they look like a particular animal and she's not saying anything about anyone else.

I hate my section overhang, if I describe it I'm talking about my body, if I say "it makes me feel ugly" I'm talking about my body. Until I say "section overhangs are ugly" (or whatever word) I have not made a comment about anyone else's body.

AimingForSerenity · 31/01/2011 10:42

As I said earlier I am larger than average and ok with it. I have no problem with using the term "fat shops" or "porker" in a humorous sense about myself but I would, in any social situation be careful about using them in company where they may offend someone else. This, to me, is basic social skills and manners.

I have been appalled at the rudeness and complete lack of manners and compassion shown on this thread to people who are sensitive or who are trying to be sensitive to the feelings of others.

I am really glad that in RL I don't meet people like some on here

penelopestitsdropped · 31/01/2011 10:44

It is also merely a description. ion. to say that penelopes toys dropped is very different to Penelope has horrible dropouts udder like tits.

as saying that x had put on weight is different to saying that x is a porky obese munter.

It has nothing to do with humour.

penelopestitsdropped · 31/01/2011 10:47

Argh! Bloody predictive text.

I am hoping that you can make sense of my last post. Apologies for how awful it is

Deaddei · 31/01/2011 10:50

I was a manager in an Evans store many years ago, when it was part of a group including Wallis-I was allowed to buy uniform from there. Actually we did get the odd size 12 in Evans then.
I was then a size 12.
I wish there were more outlets for tall women- in KIngston, which is a massive centre, there is nowhere apart from a rail in TopShop. However, size 16plus is everywhere.

babypickles · 31/01/2011 11:07

I am a size 16 /18 and would describe myself as a porker. Once a man pipped his horn and shouted get out of the road you fat cow.... I shouted actually I am obese if you don't mind and stomped off.

confuddledDOTcom · 31/01/2011 11:20

philbert, you don't scale down patterns, you scale them up so your theory doesn't work.

Lying, they're not patronising their customers, they're just using patterns made for women of that size and not over scaling clothes made for tiny women so they fit better and you can drop down a size.

I wear Bravissimo clothes occasionally (can't afford them too often!) and usually buy a size 14 because it fits better so I can go down. I'm a size 8 shoe but usually have to go to a size 9 because they're made too narrow. Shoes made for women with bigger feet are usually wider so I can wear a size 8 comfortably. Specialist clothes will always fit better.

penelopestitsdropped · 31/01/2011 11:21

That is your right. I would challenge why you felt you should compare yourself with an animal but still, it is up to you whether you do so.

But the op was calling anyone that shops in these stores as porkers.

There lies the difference.

ISNT · 31/01/2011 11:24

To OP

YANBU I was a size 14 /16 after DD1 and our town doesn't have many shops and I wasn't straying far with the baby. So I decided to check out Evans as in the window it said "now size 14 as well" or something. Bloody hell everything was absolutely massive.

I can see that shops adjust their sizing according to age group etc so topshop will come up small and they will carry a lot of small sizes, while a shop aimed at older will come up a bit bigger etc. But these garments bore no relation to the size at all, which seemed a bit silly. I felt that they'd lured me in under false pretences Grin

ISNT · 31/01/2011 11:27

I agree with philbert, find a shop which fits and stick with it.

Eg I can't go to next as they cut their trousers for a pear shape, and as I'm an apple I end up with something that digs in at the waist and then hangs off the bum and thighs. The "jodphur effect" I call it, not a good look Grin

The shop which fits me at the moment is new look. Not quite sure how to feel about that Grin
