to think that "fat shops" like Evans and Ann Harvey don't do their customers any favours by making their sizes much larger than they usually are?

Was in London last week, nipped into both. Tried on jeans in Evans, even a size 16 was too big (and I am SO not a 16). Went into Horrible Ann Harvey, Polyester Queen, and overheard the woman saying to a customer, "No, the sizes come up much bigger than in regular shops. If you're a size 16 in M & S, there won't be anything here to fit you."

Is this not going to lull porkers (I am one, I am allowed to say that) into a false sense of their own size, if they think, oh I am "only" a size 16, which is not too bad, when actually they are probably a 22+ in "normal" shops?

But it is used as an offensive term as I have detailed above.

Surely anyone with a shed of common decency would realise that using such a term, althougth they meant no harm by it, does cause offence and upset and would therefore apologise and refrain from using it in the future.

penelopestitsdropped · 31/01/2011 00:13

obese munter?

gosh i feel the need to go put on some weight so that i can be this jolly Hmm

spongebobsquareknickers · 31/01/2011 00:14

So whats an appropriate way to describe someone of a porkier size?
As it is actually RELEVANT to the OP in the first place so cant just be ignored and not mentioned?

Round?
Large?
Fat?
Chubby?

I find those more offensive than porky.

Jaquelinehyde · 31/01/2011 00:15

'obese munter' Shock what was the point of that if not to cause offense?

Also I wondered how long it would be until someone raised the why aren't you losing weight if it bothers you that much card. How very boring. If you don't like our abuse then change...what an excellent attituide.

spongebobsquareknickers · 31/01/2011 00:15

Oh Jolly, I missed that one.

Hmm
Jaquelinehyde · 31/01/2011 00:16

Overweight?

Just a suggestion, or people who need to wear plus size clothes.

mutznutz · 31/01/2011 00:17

It surely only causes such major offence and upset to those who are fat and unhappy, yet unwilling to change themselves?

Aside from the tiny minority who are fat for medical reasons...oh and aside from Penelope of course who sounds like she's only happy when she's offended on behalf of whoever?

mutznutz · 31/01/2011 00:20

FFS it's not abuse it's HUMOUR and yes bloody well change if you're going to be so offended by other people's pet terminology for themselves.

The world doesn't have to tiptoe round insecure people...it's down to us as individuals to look at why we get so upset about things. If it's because we're fat..no-one is going to be able to change that except us!!

spongebobsquareknickers · 31/01/2011 00:20

Evans stock 14 and 16, they're not plus sized, everywhere sells a 14 and 16. Even Topshop.

And you dont have to be medically overweight to have a little bit of podge.

I've changed my mind, I want all posts referring to anyone being anything apart from NORMAL deleted, as Im THAT insecure.

Ryoko · 31/01/2011 00:23

What about rotund? (which I probably spelled wrong).

Medical reasons my arse, I once knew a guy who blamed medical reasons for the fact he was the size of a house, it was because he was diabetic apparently, yeah well so is my sister and she doesn't take up two seats and half the walkway on a bus, nor does she eat a pot noodle, 2 bags of crisps and a pie on lunch breaks.

Fact of the matter is if you are unhappy/insecure with yourself anything can be taken as an insult.

Jaquelinehyde · 31/01/2011 00:24

I will get my last post deleted but I hope you can realise this isn't just HUMOUR. It is offensive and abusive to some, possibly not the majority of overweight people but surely the minority deserve some respect.

When I was at LTS I had to wear stock. I was only just tall enough to work there (at 5'9") I can't see why it would be a problem for them to employ people who represented their target group and could wear their clothes.

At LTS I had a £200 allowance every 6 months and we had a 25% (IIRC) discount on clothes, was a few years ago, no idea what it is now.

penelopestitsdropped · 31/01/2011 00:28

jaquleyne that is awful. No one should feel that way.

Sadly what spongebob and Mutz do not understand is that the reason you have been made to feel like this is because sociaety has told them and you that it is ok to use such derogatory terms. That you are so vile it is ok to openly abuse you in a way that would be rounded upon if done to any other "group"

The fact that they have been so worn by society telling them they are worth less, that they do not deserve to be seen as human and more so an animal, that they now laughingly refer to themselves in such terms.

If my judgy of suburbia attitude pisses them off then so be it, so long as more people bang on about it too and one day the message sinks through

Jaquelinehyde · 31/01/2011 00:28

Sorry sponge will have to report your last post also. Sure you understand why.

Kewcumber · 31/01/2011 00:29

Getting back to the OP... Evans sizes (when I have bought them some time ago) were huge. BUt I think they are trying to "do their custmers any favours", I think they are try to makemoney and psychologically its so nice to try something on and think - "oh no thats too big, I need a smaller size" that I think I owuld have bought it just out of relief. I don't think anyone who is a size 26/28/30 (all of which I have been in the past) is in any doubt how large they are even if they can fit into a smaller size at Evans...

My bigger issue is why reasonably priced larger clothes appear to be such poor quality.

spongebobsquareknickers · 31/01/2011 00:29

(applying for job at LTS :) )

pinkstinks · 31/01/2011 00:32

confuddled I also think its good for people to be able to show accuratly what the clothes look like, but unfortunately to just employ these people would be discriminating to the people who do not fall into the categories (height size etc)

Can you not see that a persons mental condition could possibly colour their opinion on the subject?

It is also probably not a good idea to go onto an AIBU thread about a subject that affects you in that way.

That would seem to me to be looking for trouble, and hoping to be offended.

No offence.

spongebobsquareknickers · 31/01/2011 00:34

mutznutz - thank you

penelopestitsdropped · 31/01/2011 00:35

how am i shit stirring by pointing out that a term used in a post is quite likely to offend?

Jaquelinehyde · 31/01/2011 00:35

Very, very good point Kew.

I am currently trying to find a special dress for an important occassion and I am stuck with so far the option of two websites...I shall be posting my own thread about this in the next few days.
