OK AIBU but AFAIK ATM FWIW and IIRC IME and IMHO IYKWIM
I would appreciate your POV on acronyms. Personally I find them a PITA
I know I am being OTT but it really MMTI IYSWIM. IIRC before forums and txt
we all wrote the full word. I even have friends now who say LOL FFS!

TTFN BBS :)

we should have a tongue in cheek smiley

I am finding hard to believe that grown women used baby dancing instead of typing sex.
Its as if you are talking to a 5yr old that has walked in whilst you were shagging and asked "what ya doing"

No forget that, even then I would not say Baby dancing Hmm

ah yes - dilligaf another good one! I'd forgotten what that stood for though, had to google it to check. But still a good one!

I wish people would call a DS a Nintendo DS, or even a NDS so it doesn't cause confusion...

Maybe now I will get a good nights sleep

Abbreviations here are one thing. Its the texting of my SIL that requires a code book. Can only assume came to texting in the days when a smaller number of characters allowed. Trouble is, she never learned the true text abbreviations and has made up her own. Even with a phone that allows for complete sentences, still uses her own short forms. Aargghhh! Confused

MiceElfAgin · 30/01/2011 22:16

I'm with the ds dh dd dislikers ; I always read it as if the dear or darling is said through gritted teeth. Probably says more about me! Don't really mind the others though. Fuzzypicklehead and fit2drop just made me STD (startle the dog)!

Kitty81 · 30/01/2011 22:41

FFS is strangely onomatopoeic, don't you think?

you swear a lot then do ya when ya shagging

I don't think it really matters much, though it is a bit mind-blowing when you first start reading Mumsnet!

As for me, I like words. They have a shape and flow into each other, which I really love. I could never use 'DW' for 'darling wife' in a post, for example, as the latter flows so beautifully while 'DW' is like running full tilt into a brick wall, for me at any rate.

Not sure if anyone else will understand what I'm on about Smile

ACRONYM - A Concise Rendition Of Names Yielding Meaning

Changebagsandgladrags · 31/01/2011 10:41

It used to piss me off when a co-worker used to sign off her Emails: I need this done PDQ (pretty damn quick). I replied with: IWHTHCF (I will have to have coffee first) AMAM (and maybe a muffin)

Housemum · 31/01/2011 10:51

DW sounds like a hillbilly nickname! Or makes me think of George Dubya. Never thought of that before (because mostly people on here are talking about DHs or DPs)

MandyC2 · 31/01/2011 13:53

Haha! This is so funny!

I have mighty problems with acronyms and have to look everything up in the glossary! It takes me so much longer to read things! Glad I'm not the only confused one!

I'm one of those who types out the full spelling of everything in posts, e-mails and texts. I'm an oldies but a goodie :)
x

Mymblesson · 31/01/2011 14:01

DW sounds like a hillbilly nickname!

Ha, yes, it does a bit!

Written language has pattern and flow; acronyms written in capital leters are like ugly rocks in the stream, throwing it all out and making it harder to scan and read properly.

Dumbledoresgirl · 31/01/2011 16:24

Well I LOLed at BUD meaning Become UpDuffed. Fantastic! Grin I wish I had occasion to use it but my SWI days are over.

I don't mind the acronyms here, and find some particularly useful eg FFS is so much less offensive than typing out the full word.

If I had to object to any it would be dd and ds and dh etc. I think the D for darling or dear is a bit cheesy.

mutznutz · 31/01/2011 16:27

Fast moving thread or not, I find the over use of them just as lazy and as ridiculous as text speak.

I think this has to be the only internet forum I've ever been on where acronyms are used to such a vast extent....it's getting silly really.

OTheHugeManatee · 31/01/2011 16:31

As we're all talking about acronyms, can someone tell me what IIT means?

It was on one of those waiting to conceive threads.

Anyone?

usualsuspect · 31/01/2011 16:35

Theres nothing wrong with being lazy ...its an internet forum ...you know ,used for fun

mutznutz · 31/01/2011 16:38

Indeed but it makes it very hard to read at times and therefore less fun usual

usualsuspect · 31/01/2011 16:46

I find it easy enough to read ...but then I have a very short attention span, so tend to skim read big long posts anyway Grin

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 31/01/2011 16:47

i don't know MMTI either.

ahem my DH is Ian.... Hmm

(i like to think SWI is therefore shagging with Ian Grin )

mutznutz · 31/01/2011 16:48

Me too...I tend to get distracted by shiny things Blush

mutznutz · 31/01/2011 16:50

Ian itself would probably be mistaken for an acronym on here nickel....could mean In A Nutshell or summat Grin

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 31/01/2011 16:55

shagging in a nutshell?
that doesn't sound very comfortable. Confused

CaveMum · 31/01/2011 17:03

Over on the First Time Frolickers thread in Conception, we decided that "Aunt Flo" or AF was too twee a description for a period, so our AriesGirl came up with ERTD (Evil Red Tide of Doom), which can also be used as FERTD (I'm sure you can figure it out for yourself) Grin

DH is in the RAF, and I lose count of the acronyms he uses: DAMO, SAMO, ACLO, etc Hmm I now just smile and nod.

My personal favourite that he uses (and it may be a military wide thing, not just RAF) is JAFA - Just Another F*ckin Adminer.
