OK AIBU but AFAIK ATM FWIW and IIRC IME and IMHO IYKWIM
I would appreciate your POV on acronyms. Personally I find them a PITA
I know I am being OTT but it really MMTI IYSWIM. IIRC before forums and txt
we all wrote the full word. I even have friends now who say LOL FFS!

TTFN BBS :)

we should have a tongue in cheek smiley

It was a guess Hero, the Ian could be substituted with Ivan, Iago, etc. Would have been a bit boring for those whose DH's firstnames did not begin with I, though. Smile

fit2drop · 30/01/2011 14:35

My hubby works alongside the police and is regularly on call out day and night. When he gets a call at fuckoffaclock time in the morning and he wakes me up saying 165, or RTC
or TWOC or TWK or DUI OR whatever bloody crime he has to pick a car up for I am not a happy bunny but I understand why the police use acronyms...
Seriously I just think we are a nation of lazy writers and talkers.Making it acceptable is surely contributing to the fact that we are bringing up a generation of children that struggle with correct English.

phedre · 30/01/2011 14:56

YY has me perplexed. I think it may be yes yes but then again it may be something else entirely.

ShowOfHands · 30/01/2011 14:59

yy is yes yes. It's emphatic.

And I won't be teaching dd English through the medium of MN. I don't think her school has is on the curriculum either.

This is an Internet forum. The acronyms (and the in jokes and the unwritten rules) are what makes us a community and it's for ease of use.

Oddly, I can switch between using a website, writing a letter, applying for a job, writing an essay and addressing my MIL with ease. It's the benefit of adaptability.

MissQue · 30/01/2011 15:02

Ian Beale giving himself a treat

WHERE IS THE PUKE SMILEY?????

MissQue · 30/01/2011 15:04

TY for clearing up the FF thing BTW Wink

nannynick · 30/01/2011 15:04

New one I've recently seen is:

NWOC

Nanny With Own Child

Not really sure that is needed. Things like DS, DD, DH, DW, MIL are quite useful.

Once it gets to being 4 letters long, not so such it's as useful.

fit2drop · 30/01/2011 15:11

Show of hands..

I'm sure you can as can most adults.
However I do think that through face book and txts our children are learning lazy ways .

Anyway as in he opening post this thread was purely tongue in cheek,

sighs I have Sunday head and really do not want to help turn this thread away from what is was/is , a light hearted attempt for a bit of humour after all the growley threads

peace

ShowOfHands · 30/01/2011 15:17

I know it's tic. I see your username.

But I'm ill and cross and taking it out on threads indiscriminately.

thumbdabwitch · 30/01/2011 15:35

What's wrong, Show? you got the flu or summat?

I like acronyms. I don't like acronyms that mean different things to different people though, that gets confusing.
However - there is a place for them in everyday human parlance too - whoever wants to say they are avoiding Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection, rather than just saying HIV?

I get more annoyed when an acronym becomes a word, e.g. Aids. Aids are what people use to help them in daily life - AIDS = Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. Different.

But OP - YABVU in general - on fast-moving threads, MIL, DD, DH, STBXH, CBA, FFS etc, are essential to adding to the furore getting your point across before everyone else does commenting on it.Grin

ShowOfHands · 30/01/2011 15:38

Some mean little virus that's working its way one by one through the residents of Norfolk.

My sinuses have become pockets in which to store crap.

It wouldn't be so bad but dh is at work till midnight and dd is coming out the other side of it and is just full of beans. She wants to dance fgs.

kampakat · 30/01/2011 15:39

I have a friend who is an ambulance driver, she hasn't trained as a paramedic so her job title is currently ...
Technician Without Any Training.........

Katey1010 · 30/01/2011 15:40

Stephen Fry points out that it takes a lot longer to say double u, double u, double u, than world wide web but we say www.whateveritis.com all the time.

bloomingnora · 30/01/2011 15:42

There is a school of thought that says only words like 'AIDS' are acronyms and that the ones mentione in the OP are initialisms.

thumbdabwitch · 30/01/2011 15:42

Kampakat - really??? that's not good...

Show - nasty. :( hope you get better soon.

Katey - not in Australia it doesn't - they say dub dub dub.whatever.com.au Shock

Katey1010 · 30/01/2011 15:47

I like dub dub dub. I will try to get it to catch on.

fit2drop · 30/01/2011 15:51

Thumbdabwitch you said

But OP - YABVU in general - on fast-moving threads, MIL, DD, DH, STBXH, CBA, FFS etc, are essential to adding to the furore getting your point across before everyone else does commenting on it.

Does FFS mean 'for fuck's sake'? That's what I always read it as. Bit embarassing if not now...!
