OK AIBU but AFAIK ATM FWIW and IIRC IME and IMHO IYKWIM
I would appreciate your POV on acronyms. Personally I find them a PITA
I know I am being OTT but it really MMTI IYSWIM. IIRC before forums and txt
we all wrote the full word. I even have friends now who say LOL FFS!

TTFN BBS :)

we should have a tongue in cheek smiley

yes, it means for fucks sake, its my favourite acronym, sometimes only a ffs will do

Pippaandpolly · 30/01/2011 16:55

Oh good. One of my favourite sayings Blush.

thunderbird69 · 30/01/2011 16:57

I don't like PMSL

it leaves me with a unpleasant image...

HeroShrew · 30/01/2011 17:08

I've just remembered that I have a favourite acronym that I never see used on here but could be v appropriate - ABCD as in Above and Beyond the Call of Duty.. I may try and start a trend.

BetsyBoop · 30/01/2011 17:39

the military are the worst, they have a TLA language all of their own, but I must admit I do love FUBAR Grin

fit2drop · 30/01/2011 17:44

OOHHH Betsy at Christmas
My son taught me a card game call FUBAR .

after a few games and losing I was FUBAR(d)
Grin

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 30/01/2011 17:48

If you ever learn a computer language, you'll find that the commonest variable names in examples are 'foo' and 'bar' - derived from FUBAR.

SNAFU is another good one.

BetsyBoop · 30/01/2011 17:50

I'd forgotten about SNAFU Grin

thumbdabwitch · 30/01/2011 17:55

I love FUBAR.

Another one that I really like is "I'm having a CRAFT moment" (Can't Remember A Fucking Thing). Better than a "senior" moment, which grates somewhat.

elspartacus · 30/01/2011 18:07

I read TWOC as Trial WithOut Catheter...

thegreatpretender · 30/01/2011 19:05

I like CRAFT. although I'll have to say 'flipping thing' or I'll get in trouble with DH :)

I'm not a huge fan of acronyms, although I do use DH etc (clearly....). But I also think that MNers are some of the most articulate internet chatters around, and probably have better grammar and spelling, on the whole, than most people I know!

nicki1978 · 30/01/2011 19:08

oh my goodness, I love this thread I was nearly crying with laughing.

I really am rubbish at trying to read acronyms, I can understand most of common basic 2 letter ones and some more common three letter ones, but after that they just go over my head, lol, it's always fun to try and work out what it means though Smile xx

Some text messages I get off my youngest sister, I have to ring her to decipher for me (and I am only 33!!) Smile xx

Housemum · 30/01/2011 20:04

I don't mind them in the main - easy to write DD1, 2 etc rather than "my oldest daughter said..."

I wish I knew what some of the MN specific ones that aren't int he acronym list meant - I keep seeing them around but hav't got a clue what they mean. Anyone care to enlighten me on the meanings of

WISE
AVID
PESH

as they've been around so long I feel stupid asking!

Housemum · 30/01/2011 20:05

FUBAR? SNAFU?

fit2drop · 30/01/2011 20:07

FUBAR

Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition

SNAFU
not a clue ??

OP posts:
LadyBiscuit · 30/01/2011 20:09

WISE and AVID mean wise and avid :o

I don't remember what PESH means

usualsuspect · 30/01/2011 20:10

My favouite is JFDI

LadyBiscuit · 30/01/2011 20:10

PESH defined on here

ShowOfHands · 30/01/2011 20:12

SNAFU is Situation Normal: All fucked up iirc.

DH likes dilligaf.

PESH isn't a MN wide thing it's a group of pregnant women who chat on a thread. They're embittered selfish hags or something. Was a joke based on an article or something.

notinbed · 30/01/2011 20:14

Is it just me who finds the use of "DH" by women who's H is clearly anything but D rather strange? Then again I don't really get the need for the rather twee D anyway.

DilysPrice · 30/01/2011 20:16

I want to know who the heroine was who put a stop to the puke-making BD and replaced it with the far more sensible and mumsnetty SWI? I lurked for a while in the BD days, then came back a year later and it was all about SWI. whoever it was deserves some kind of MN medal.

I spent many years as a UK representative at ITU meetings in Geneva. The ITU is a UN agency dealing with how telephone networks worldwide work together. When new services are defined they usually think up paragraph headings but initially leave the details blank by putting FFS there.

For Future Study.

Always made me snigger. Grin

TigersChick · 30/01/2011 20:32

I like both SNAFU and FUBAR - could use regularly at work but am a year-6 teacher so probably not appropriate GrinWink

Dilys - I'm unbelievably happy that BD has gone! What about AF? I always found them equally nausiating!!

GoldenKippers · 30/01/2011 20:53

I can't bring myself to write DS. He is my son, not a Nintendo handheld gaming device! Anyway, 'son' is only three letters long and doesn't require capital letters.
I can type fast so using acronyms wouldn't save me any time, though I suppose some acronyms might come in handy when having to type one-handed holding a baby.
It would be nice sometimes to read posts without having to use a glossary!
