To not want to speak to the cashier

I was at Sainsbury's this morning and the man serving me says hello (lovely, polite) and begins to scan my items. Halfway through he say "So are you doing anything nice tomorrow?".
Now of course this in not the first time this has happened but I mean WTF? Why on God's green Earth does he think I will tell him my social plans for Sunday??

It is lovely when when people say Hello, thank you please etc. I always say hello and thank you and please but I draw the line at some of the things I get asked at the checkout:

"Oh having guests this evening are we?"
"Oh that wine is lush but have you tried..."
"I think that colour will look lovely on you"
"Had a nice day today?"

See, I quite like that. I'd much rather a cashier was like that than a miserable sod. As long as they're not too personal and dont' start offering parenting tips or commenting on the brand of tampons I use then I don't mind

Although that has just reminded me of Caroline Aherne as the cashier (think it was in the Fast Show) where she comments on everything the man buys "Ribbed Condoms? Very thoughtful!"

I find it far worse to be greeted by a grunt and no eye contact...or to be served whilst the cashier is in mid conversation with someone else...dumps the change in my hand and doesn't aknowledge me at all.

Are they told to do that?

I especially hate it if I'm waiting in the queue for a long chat to end SO I CAN GET SERVED!!!

Mutznutz I totally agree! I hate hate hate it when a cashier is chatting away and doesn't even acknowledge me. Our local Tescos do that all the time and it's very rude

I was just in waterstones. Cshier was super friendly asking lots of questions. Iwantex to scream at him to Fuck off and let me just pay for my books.

Ok well I am never rude to the cashier - I always smile and reply but I am usually shopping with two children and concentrating on packing. I like manners - just not discussing my plans with strangers!

I wonder if they're told to do that. One of my local clothes shops has taken to positioning sales assistants at the door to ask 'How are you this morning?' as you go in. It just makes you feel like a twat mumbling 'Er, fine, how are you?' to a complete stranger.

I only went in to buy a pair of tights. Leave me alone!

Aw! I love it when people do that! I think it really shows they are happy in their job and it's nice they take an interest in their customers. Far better than when you don't even get a "Hello".

Don't go to a hairdresser, will you? They ask all kinds of personal stuff and they don't even have a conveyor belt of shopping in front of them to provide inspiration.... Can't believe the grumpy people on here!!!

Hmmm, not so sure it shows they're happy in their job Fraochsmum. I think it shows they've had a pep talk that morning. Did you watch Mary Portas in the sofa showroom where every new customer gets pounced on... 'Hello Madam, is this your first visit?' etc etc

I am like this but with hairdressers. I HATE the chat. Its worse as you are there for a few hours. I put it of and put it off...

The hairdresser's different Chil. They're allowed to ask you anything and vice versa.

I always take a book to the hairdresser to avoid awful pointless conversation. I just say something like " I hope you don't mind but I never get the chance to read at home" take out my book and let her get on with it. If you are paying for a service and are polite I don't see why you should have to feign interest if you don't want to..
