To Hate Topshop?

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 26/01/2011 12:34

Went in yesterday with dp for first time in aaages-

Everything just looks weird, all completely shapeless and boxy, and just plain unflattering.

The changing rooms were rank with teeny curtains and faced directly onto the shop floor in strange burlesque manner.

The staff as well! Weirdly sneery and one particularly sneery one was wearing a mans shirt with granny pants and nothing else.
I'm in my twenties so I should like all that tat shouldn't I??

What would Mary do?

It's overpriced, badly made shite. You can buy stuff the same quality in supermarkets, Primarni and Matalan.

YADDDDNBU - and they rarely have any size over a 12 on the rack.

I'm also in my 20's btw and haven't bought anything in there since before I hit Uni. Ditto River Island. I do get the occasional bargain in the Miss Selfridge sale though.

Where are we supposed to shop? M&S is too dowdy. Primark et al fall apart too quick and the materials too thin to hid the lumps and bumps. I quite like Peacocks, at least the hems stay stitched and the prices are linked to the quality1

prettymuchapixiegirl · 26/01/2011 12:41

I hate Topshop too! And I agree with Purple that the same stuff can be bought elsewhere, often for half the price.

I'm in my mid thirties now but TBH have never really been into Topshop, I remember some friends when I was younger would only buy their clothes from there and nowhere else. I think it's overpriced really. Dowdy colours, dowdy designs and designed for 6ft tall, young, skinny, long-legged model types, which I most definitely am not!

prettymuchapixiegirl · 26/01/2011 12:41

And PMSL at the assistant in granny pants; I'd have asked her if she'd forgotten to put her trousers on

NinkyNonker · 26/01/2011 12:43

All rubbish.

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 26/01/2011 12:44

I know purple!!
I'm living in Gap at the mo but even that seems a bit plain and mumsy grr!
I do like miss selfridge but I think this year has been rubbish for them, all biscuit coloured?

top shop makes me sad! they dont make clothes for women with more than a hint of bust!!

Ladyofthehousespeaking · 26/01/2011 12:52

Yup, I'm hourglass shapes and everything I tried on mad me look really chubby

i always think of topshop as being for teenagers. you know you are getting older when the stuff in there looks rubbish and you are definitely well into your thirties when you start thinking loads of stuff in M&S looks nice (and don't the size 10s fit better).

GandTiceandaslice · 26/01/2011 12:53

I used to go inn there as I liked their shoes.
They have now removed the ramp so I can't access the shop anymore.
So fuck 'em.

MadreInglese · 26/01/2011 12:55

Grin @ what would mary do

bupcakesandcunting · 26/01/2011 12:55

I work for a well-known fashion chain. I am 30 and I LOVE our stock. It's on-trend without being too try-hard or teenage and not at all mumsy. Topshop is over-priced, flimsy tat. Avoid Grin

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 26/01/2011 12:55

I used to love Topshop, but our branch has relocated from the place it was 25 years ago to a new site, and it's all gone wrong.

You can't see the whole floor in one go, which irritates me. And it's full of concessions.

H&M perhaps?

GandTiceandaslice · 26/01/2011 12:56

Ohh H&M irritaes me. I can't work out the kids clothes sizes & the clothes are arranged a bit jumble sale-ish.

I used to like Next but the quality of clothes is awful now.

purplepidjin · 26/01/2011 13:01

kepler, I've felt like that about the place since I was about 16. What does that make me

Ooh, bupcakes, pm me which one and I'll go have a nosy!!

I found 4 tops I like in Debenhams sale online the other dayand ordered them, but thats just plain stuff to go underneath interesting stuff.

purplepidjin · 26/01/2011 13:02

H&M is guaranteed to be the wrong cut for me - boobs in the wrong place; or boobs in right place but waist too big so I look am fat

formerdiva · 26/01/2011 13:03

Yep...Topshop was the saviour of my 20's but is now horrid.

But what's the new Topshop? What's the best high street, reasonably priced chain that's the place for a thirtysomethingohmygod actuallynearlyfortsomething to shop?

trixie123 · 26/01/2011 13:06

My DP drags me to the Oxford Street one a few times a year because he (irritatingly fit and skinny) still looks great in the clothes. I never even attempt to look at the womans, sorry, prepubescent girls, stuff, as I just feel fat, old and frumpy the minute I step through the door. I end up in New Look quite a lot (sighs for the pre-DS days when i could afford to shop in Monsoon and Fat Face!)

kenobi · 26/01/2011 13:08

I personally think Uniqlo rocks formerdiva

kenobi · 26/01/2011 13:08

And Zara?

formerdiva · 26/01/2011 13:11

Oooh - feel a shopping trip coming on kenobi!

Deaddei · 26/01/2011 13:13

Zara has the rudest sales staff I have ever met.

gleechie · 26/01/2011 13:18

I am also in my 20's and swear by ASOS, the only thing decent thing that Topshop do is a tall range (am a 6ft-er) but now New Look have a decent range of jeans for half the price and better quality I won't be going back!! The stuff at topshop can be so slutty!!

Emo76 · 26/01/2011 13:20

Everything I have ever purchased from Zara has lost its buttons or fallen apart. I like their styles but the quality is as bad as Top Shop IMO.

kenobi · 26/01/2011 13:27

Actually I have never thought about it but you're right deaddei Still love their stuff though especially for work.

ASOS is brill - couldn't agree more gleechie

backwardpossom · 26/01/2011 13:36

I hate Topshop too! Overpriced tat.
