To Hate Topshop?

Went in yesterday with dp for first time in aaages-

Everything just looks weird, all completely shapeless and boxy, and just plain unflattering.

The changing rooms were rank with teeny curtains and faced directly onto the shop floor in strange burlesque manner.

The staff as well! Weirdly sneery and one particularly sneery one was wearing a mans shirt with granny pants and nothing else.
I'm in my twenties so I should like all that tat shouldn't I??

What would Mary do?

And Top Shop is owned by objectionable tax-dodger and Kate Moss Groupie Phil Green (if you needed any more negatives). Spend your hard-earned money elsewhere.

Oooo I haven't heard of uniqlo! Is it British?

It's Japanese. Came over about 3-4 years ago I think. They have a same-day jean tailoring service for £5.

Only issue is that being Japanese they don't stock above about a 16 as far as I can tell. They've got a sale on at the mo.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 26/01/2011 14:15

We need a Uniqlo in my town. I see they sell online, but I really do like to try stuff on before going through all the rigmarole of collecting orders from the PO (I'm never in to take delivery).

I've never really liked Next. A lot of it is so dull. Also, whenever they do something that's OK-ish, you see about a gazillion other women in the same item.

Agree about H&M being jumble saley. I never shop there on Saturdays for that reason - weekdays are usually OK though.

purplepidjin · 26/01/2011 14:25

I've just had my delivery from Debenhams - 2 days early, I must add Grin - and have received 3 tops from Maine and one from Redherring. The Redherring one is more of a jumper than a tshirt, which i didn't expect, but they are all really nice, proper quality, subtle embellishments... Aaah, I can relax now, even if I did spend £50 I don't really have... Blush

StarlightPrincess · 26/01/2011 14:36

It's ridiculously overpriced. The only I buy there are jeans because they fit me like a glove. I can find much cheaper and just as fashionable alternatives at Boohoo, Primark and H&M-I'm 22 by the way.

Stangirl · 26/01/2011 14:46

new Look is brilliant - but make sure you go to a very large branch that has all the concession brands in and the full range otherwise it's a bit shit. Amazing shoes too.

Mahraih · 26/01/2011 14:56

I love Topshop! Blush It is now very expensive, but nowhere else IMHO can you get high street clothes that look that good. They don't necessarily last longer, but compared with H&M, New Look etc, it does just look better.

But now I only shop there in the sale, or if I have birthday money ... sigh.

Good alternatives: a large New Look, or a decent H&M (seems hit and miss). Gap, when they're feeling brave ... Benetton, maybe?

MsSparkle · 26/01/2011 15:14

I thought i was the only one!

I have never understood the fasination about Topshop? You hear celebs going on about how wonderful it is and i just don't get it.

I have been in several times and never find anything nice to wear, it's all weird stuff that makes you wonder who in their right mind would buy?

KarmaDevil · 26/01/2011 15:31

I used to love Topshop in my teens and early twenties, but in the past 5 years or so have just found the clothes to be well crap really. I tend to shop in Dorothy Perkins, Next, occasionally Primark and ASOS.

ifancyashandy · 26/01/2011 15:32

Ummm... voice of disent!

I am over 40 and I love Top Shop! I am currently wearing their grey harem pants, cream t-shirt and their 'boyfriend' cardi!

I obviously(!) don't go for their gym knickers and the like but I wear their Jamie ultra skinny jeans all the time. They're great for tunic dresses and the like. I've also got about 4 jumpers from there!

I am tall (5'9) and a size 10 to 12 but I am also of my right mind Grin!

I can't stand Uniqulo (sp?!) - frumpy and boring. H&M Is like a jumble, New Look fabrics make me itch and River Island is too 'blingy'. Adore Zara, Ted Baker, Whistles, Reiss and Joseph. Oh and ASOS. LOTS of ASOS!

purplepidjin · 26/01/2011 15:57

ifancy I'm 5'4" and a 14ish. I look like I've just shat myself in harem pants, and I look like my Nan in a boyfriend cardi. I wear straight or bootcut jeans with plain or decorated tops, vest tops over the top for interest, and also cardi's but usually plain colours in slightly girlier styles. I wear uniform for work, so no need for "smart" unless I'm going out Grin

ifancyashandy · 26/01/2011 16:06

To be fair, I probably look lke I've shat meself too but I don't care!

Actually, you could (if you wanted to!) wear them - you just need one that are slim in the leg and stick on a pair of heels and et voila!

But like I say, if you wanted to Grin

purplepidjin · 26/01/2011 16:09

If I could cope with wearing heels for more than 5 minutes

I'll stick to my fake Sainsbo's converse's ta Grin

bestmamaderwelt · 26/01/2011 16:20

'It's overpriced, badly made shite.' har hear HandM is the way to go.
