M and S clothes - inappropriate names?

Bumpsadaisie · 22/01/2011 07:33

AIBU to feel decidedly odd about buying my 19mth old DD a "boyfriend cardigan" and some "harem pants" ?

The clothes themselves were lovely but why couldn't they just be called " stripey cardi" and "baggy trousers"?

Or am I being OTT?

TurkeyBurgerThing · 22/01/2011 07:40

The names are the style of the garments though?

Kentmummy · 22/01/2011 07:53

What Turkeyburgerthing said! It's the style... Nothing sexualized.

PrivetDancer · 22/01/2011 07:58

Exactly, they describe the actual shape of the clothes. Yabover sensitive.

Why anybody would ever buy harem pants is beyond me though, although perhaps they might be more reasonable for someone still in nappies.

IngridFletcher · 22/01/2011 08:00

Then maybe don't buy a 19 month old miniature adult clothes?

fedupofnamechanging · 22/01/2011 08:58

Harem pants are not adult clothing imo. They are perfect toddler clothes misappropriated by adults Smile

A boyfriend cardigan is just the name given to the style of big baggy cardis

ThePerfectFather · 22/01/2011 09:24

They should be given communist state style names to avoid any confusion.

Top #24324 goes very well with Trouser #6654 citizen.

PlanetLizard · 22/01/2011 09:48

YANBU. I agree with you OP.

I don't agree that it describes the "shape of the clothes". The cardigan is not in the shape of a "boyfriend"! Why not just call it a "long cardigan"?

Sirzy · 22/01/2011 09:50

I cant say I ever look at the names given to clothes! If I like them I buy them if not I don't. Couldn't care what they decide to call them!

southmum · 22/01/2011 09:54

YABU and waaaaay too sensitive.

Dont buy them if you dont want.

orangepoo · 22/01/2011 09:59

Don't buy them.

Get her some leggings and long sleeved tshirts - that's what my 2yo wears.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 22/01/2011 10:01

Grin at perfectfather!

PlanetLizard · 22/01/2011 10:04

No-one is going to want their child to read the label and ask what a "harem" is, are they?

belgo · 22/01/2011 10:06

How many 19month olds can read the word 'Harem'?

Nappy trousers is a far better description.

belgo · 22/01/2011 10:09

YANBU. this looks nothing like a cardigan a boyfriend would wear.

Mumcentreplus · 22/01/2011 10:09

relax lady..

PlanetLizard · 22/01/2011 10:09

Not many, belgo, but I've seen clothes with similar names on sale for older children too.

PigTail · 22/01/2011 10:14

hahahhahahah no boyfriend I've ever had would wear that cardi!

I did refuse to buy D some "boy cut" jeans in Gap....I thought I might as well give her DS's hand me downs.

belgo · 22/01/2011 10:19

It's a moot point Planetlizard, no-one should ever buy these harem trousers they are hideous.

pointydug · 22/01/2011 10:23

Must admit, it's a daft idea to describe toddler and little kid clothes in the same way as adult ones. Bizarre.

pointydug · 22/01/2011 10:24

Shock THose autograph trousers are diabolical. Have you seen the rear view. Elephant Arse doesn't do it justice.

Porcelain · 22/01/2011 10:31

If a child did ask what a harem was, you could tell the truth: its the rooms in a household where women live and men are forbidden. It's only sexual in the eyes of western artists who, being men, never saw one.

PrivetDancer · 22/01/2011 12:00

They do describe the shape of the clothes. Boyfriend cardigan means long and straight, harem pants means plenty of room for a nappy. No, the cardigan is not in the shape of a boyfriend Hmm just like a t-shirt is not a perfect t shape, and a jumper does not jump.

FabbyChic · 22/01/2011 12:09

Sounds like the clothing is too old for a 19 month old.

pointydug · 22/01/2011 12:58

Are all boyfriends long and straight?

Boyfriend means you are wearing an over-sized cardi because you have borrowed it from your boyfriend who is at least two sizes bigger than you (or not).

19 month olds don't have boyfriends.

GloriaSmut · 22/01/2011 13:01

I would burn any cardigan brought into this house by a boyfriend.

But these are both ridiculously named garments for tiny little children.
