Hi,

I live together with a single mother and her daughter. I look after her daughter three evenings a week. The mother likes to watch Dad's Army and thinks it is hilarious to ALWAYS make comments about me being German. Her daughter sings the themesong over and over again and her mum encourages her to do so, especially when my German friends are visiting me. At first I didn't mind but after two years of living with them I just think that this is very disrespectful.
Mother asked me once if I would dislike Jewish people ?! Shock

Am I being unreasonable?

They sound like idiots. Why do you live with them?

mutznutz · 21/01/2011 16:35

I think it's like any form of teasing really...if you're fed up with it, tell her to stop doing it.

bubblewrapped · 21/01/2011 16:36
Biscuit

Nobody watches Dads Army apart from old people...

Punkatheart · 21/01/2011 16:36

It's stupidity - pure and simple. You sound like a gentle person - I wouldn't put up with this nonsense.

Just speak to her - explain that it is insulting. She is also raising her daughter to think ignorantly too..(although you might want to be careful how you phrase this).

mincenmash · 21/01/2011 16:38

Make it very clear to them that their joke has now been worn out.I'm sure they'll stop it if they know it upsets you.

MardyBra · 21/01/2011 16:40

YANBU - it's a very reactionary mindset.

It's a shame you didn't nip it in the bud two years ago though. They probably think it's just gentle teasing. Maybe you could retaliate with your own sitcom: "Don't mention the war. I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it."

NightFury · 21/01/2011 16:41

YANBU.

sue52 · 21/01/2011 16:46

I grew up watching Dads Army. I have never made a joke about the war or said anything remotely anti German. Tell them to grow up.

Well have you told them it bothers you? If you haven't do so, she might be mortified. If you have and she ignores you, move out. You don't have to live with someone who disrespects your feelings.

LookToWindward · 21/01/2011 16:52

I rather like Dad's army (though I am old). Why don't you ask them to stop? If you live with them you must know them well enough to be able to ask them without causing offence?

JBellingham · 21/01/2011 16:53

sounds like a Gleiwitz incident to me, invade their bedrooms as retaliation.

so what's the hitler comment then?

AgentZigzag · 22/01/2011 01:24

What's happened after two years for it to suddenly start annoying you?

Is this a thread about a thread and I've missed something?

How old is this woman? No one under the age of 50 watches dads army.

MsKLo · 22/01/2011 06:49

She sounds very ignorant

moogster1a · 22/01/2011 10:19

I'd annex the living room

pointydug · 22/01/2011 10:27

lol @ moog

TiggyD · 22/01/2011 13:22

Mention the American war of independence, and ask what happened to India, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, half of Africa etc. Germany invaded half of Europe before losing it. Britain Invaded a third of the world then lost it.

Saltire · 22/01/2011 13:25

I'm confused. You said in your title you were offended by Hitler comments but didn't mention one in your OP

nickschick · 22/01/2011 13:26

You need to shave your moustache off ,wear different glasses and realise khaki green is not your colour Grin.

TiggyD · 22/01/2011 13:31

The Dads Army theme that the mother encourages her child to sing goes "Who do you think you are kidding Mr Hitler".
