Is there really outrage over Miranda Kerr's breastfeeding photo?

Hello...

In the news today. Miranda Kerr (wife of Orlando Bloom) has released a picture of herself and her son...

Scroll down the story to see the photo...

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1348809/Orlando-Bloom-wets-baby-head-Miranda-Kerr-pictured-son.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

In the photo Miranda is breastfeeding her son, and I was moved by it and thought what an amazing, beauiful photo and how great that a celebrity is celebrating breastfeeding!

But - in some news articles, the message is that the photo has caused 'outrage' and that some people say this kind of photo should not be shown...

Do some people really feel like that? Does it offend some people? The Royal College of Midwives have said:

?Many women feel awkward about breastfeeding in public these days. But when people see a celebrity nursing their baby, it helps change that.?

I tend to agree and I love this photo - what does everyone else think? Do you love it or hate it and why?!

The only thing about the photo that makes me Envy is how amazing Miranda looks! Wink

There's no accounting for the prudishness of some sections of the press.

AngelsOnHigh · 21/01/2011 05:38

There was a segment in the OZ paper today with comments from the general public.

The general opinion was that it was all about the mother and not about the baby.

It looked like a very "Posed" photograph.

I don't think the baby was really feeding. I think that the boob and baby were carefully placed for the photo .

When Danni Minogue had her little one there was a glorious photo of her and bub in the paper. She didn't have on any makeup and her hair was very casual
. She actually looked about 10 years younger than she does when all made up. Her skin looked beautiful.

seeker · 21/01/2011 06:28

It's a lovley picture - but her nipples must be in a very odd place if the baby is actually feeding!

Morloth · 21/01/2011 06:32

Position looks about right if you take into account that she is lying on her left side and feeding from the right breast. I did this a lot when I couldn't be arsed to roll over.

However, I did NOT look like that is such a position unfortunately.

Of course it all about her, she is a model isn't she? Would anyone actually be interested in the baby if he didn't have famous parents?

GotArt · 21/01/2011 06:46

I have a picture of myself laying exactly the same way and there is no nipple showing, although I didn't look nearly as beautiful and my boob was massive compared to DD's head; maybe that's why it was censored off FB for being obscene. Hmm

This picture is gorgeous.

Mishy1234 · 21/01/2011 06:56

It's a lovely photo. People who are outraged by it are pretty odd imo. There are a lot of things to be outraged about atm. This isn't one of them.

I agree about the position Morloth. I have some photos like this too, but look like hell on earth rather than gorgeous!

DitaVonCheese · 21/01/2011 09:25

There was exactly the same hooha about Angelina Jolie bfing on the front cover of W magazine and you can see even less (would post a link except I am typing in a tiny corner of the screen while DD has the rest of it Hmm) but it's easy to find.

The objection there seemed to be that it was a private moment which shouldn't be shared Hmm but I think what the naysayers meant was "Oh my sweet Jesus, she has her boob in that baby's mouth, the perverted witch, help help it's giving me conniptions" Hmm

It's the same reason that people object to a mum bfing in public even though they can't see anything whatsoever, because they just don't like the idea of it (and which is why the "Well, if people were just discreet rather than thrusting their breasts in people's faces, there wouldn't be any problems" argument doesn't work).

Freakin' eejits. Well done Miranda Kerr :)

bruffin · 21/01/2011 09:40

There is nothing to be outraged about, it's just a really bad photo of what it is supposed to represent. People in RL who saw the photo agreed.

She isn't glowing - she is smothered in make up

She has absolutely no connection with the baby in the picture

Her hand looks like she can hardly bear to touch the poor baby

The baby looks like it is propped there as an after thought

The whole thing is staged and unnatural.

AngelsOnHigh · 21/01/2011 10:05

Well said bruffin

As I said earlier the photos of Danni Minogue with her new bub were beautiful.

No makeup but absolutely glowing.

Cleofartra · 21/01/2011 10:12

Pah - rubbish. She's glowing. Baby is well positioned. I saw the picture and was pleased to see someone bf in a position you don't normally see, but which I myself was very familiar with!

Cleofartra · 21/01/2011 10:16

Meant to add - look at some pictures of her in make up and you can see how different she looks in the breastfeeding picture. She is just a very young, happy and beautiful woman. Lucky her.

plastered

DitaVonCheese · 21/01/2011 10:23

I actually think she looks knackered. But I don't care, just nice to see a positive bfing image for once.

tyler80 · 21/01/2011 10:35

My sister, who lives in Melbourne, thinks breastfeeding rates are better than in the UK but still not that high. You still get stories such as a woman being asked not to breastfeed on a plane for example so still improvements to be made.

pozzled · 21/01/2011 10:54

I think it's a beautiful photo.

BaresarkBunny · 21/01/2011 14:43

MillyR I am convinced that those pictures aren't Orlando. His ears are all wrong.

catwhiskers10 · 21/01/2011 14:48

I agree with moongirl about how page 3 is acceptable but breastfeeding in public isn't. You can't see anything when someone is feeding so I don't understand what's so offensive about it. Good job our ancestors didn't find breastfeeding offensive or we wouldn't be here today!

RobynLou · 21/01/2011 15:06

I think it's a beautiful photo, who cares whethers she's got som makeup on or not, and I've fed in that position every day for the past 3.5 years - looks v natural me!

meadowlarks · 21/01/2011 15:25

Lovely. I find "Flynn Bloom" a bit of a tongue-twister though.

Psammead · 21/01/2011 15:38

I caught a glimpse of the Mirror's report on this and their line was 'get out of the way, baby' or something. Such a shame they made a joke out of it.

monkeyflippers · 21/01/2011 15:58

Links not working!

monkeyflippers · 21/01/2011 16:00

Ok found the pic somewhere else, she looks lovely I think!

weehuni · 21/01/2011 16:56

i think some women who tried but couldnt breast feed feel insecure by it a little, including me. i think its a lovely photo though!

weehuni · 21/01/2011 17:01

although very 'posed'

AnnaBubbles · 21/01/2011 17:18

Oh, I thought the picture was so beautiful. The baby is gorgeous, Miranda Kerr is heartbreakingly gorgeous, and I was Envy.

Angelmist · 21/01/2011 17:36

Everything in life is sexualised, its part of living in a male dominated world.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this photo. More Mums should breastfeed in public so that society learns to accept it as a natural part of life and living. No one should give a breastfeeding Mum a second glance unless Mum is exposing herself unnecessarily.

Most Mums are modest when breast feeding and one hardly knows what's going on.
