Is there really outrage over Miranda Kerr's breastfeeding photo?

Hello...

In the news today. Miranda Kerr (wife of Orlando Bloom) has released a picture of herself and her son...

Scroll down the story to see the photo...

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1348809/Orlando-Bloom-wets-baby-head-Miranda-Kerr-pictured-son.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

In the photo Miranda is breastfeeding her son, and I was moved by it and thought what an amazing, beauiful photo and how great that a celebrity is celebrating breastfeeding!

But - in some news articles, the message is that the photo has caused 'outrage' and that some people say this kind of photo should not be shown...

Do some people really feel like that? Does it offend some people? The Royal College of Midwives have said:

?Many women feel awkward about breastfeeding in public these days. But when people see a celebrity nursing their baby, it helps change that.?

I tend to agree and I love this photo - what does everyone else think? Do you love it or hate it and why?!

The only thing about the photo that makes me Envy is how amazing Miranda looks! Wink

Good on her. Especially as her breasts are her livelihood.

NinkyNonker · 20/01/2011 15:47

Lovely. Hadn't even realised OB was in a relationship let alone having a baby.

DontCallMeBaby · 20/01/2011 15:49

There were some really stupid comments about her looking sexy, enticing or something (can't remember exact word being bandied about, it had a surprising numbr of syllables for the Daily Mail) ... I guess it takes a bunch of mums to realise she looks utterly loved-up - WITH HER BABY.

CountBapula · 20/01/2011 16:06

From the Daily Express:

"BREASTFEEDING her newborn son Flynn and smiling for the camera, it is clear a radiant Miranda Kerr could not be happier.
But the first-time-mother and 27-year-old model has caused a stir with this simple family snap ? taken by proud father, Pirates Of The Caribbean star Orlando Bloom, 33.

After posting the photo on her online blog, the Australian swimwear model has reopened a debate about whether or not mothers should breastfeed in public.

?Instead of appreciating the image of the joy of new motherhood I found myself wondering if anything is private and sacred anymore in the world of celebrity,? said one woman on website Digital Spy.
?An absolutely stunning photo,? said one mother. ?It really is a family snap, unlike most of the standard celeb shots of new babies and mothers. And [it is] fab to see a less-viewed breastfeeding position in the public domain.? The picture comes a week after child health experts warned that mothers should not feed babies exclusively on breast milk for the first six months because of risk of infants developing allergies.

Hmm

Whoops - missed out a para - copying and pasting on iphone.

"On parenting website Mumsnet, the comments were largely favourable, especially from those who had breastfed their babies."

''The picture comes a week after child health experts warned that mothers should not feed babies exclusively on breast milk for the first six months because of risk of infants developing allergies''

Yet another misquote by the media. Sheesh

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 19:58

This quote from the media really annoys me as it does so much damage - I have had so many women ask me if that means that they should be adding formula milk to their bf routine! I wish they would get their info right!

Ahhhh, I think it's lovely. How could anyone be upset about such a beautiful picture?

MillyR · 20/01/2011 20:08

I think it is really good that she has done this. It made me feel very broody.

Orlando has aged really badly though.

That's a beautiful picture! Little baby. I'm only outraged that she can look that breathtakingly stunning probably at what was 3 am in the morning....

midori1999 · 20/01/2011 21:00

It's beautiful to see a lovely family photo like that, she looks amazing and so happy.

scottishmummy · 20/01/2011 21:16

Morloth · 20/01/2011 21:49

Haven't heard any negative comments on it here, was front page of the Sydney Morning Herald on line. nice photo.

Everyone I know breastfeeds here but and so nobody really thinks about it I think.

KaraStarbuckThrace · 20/01/2011 21:53

Aww that photo has made me feel all gushy Grin

Can't wait until DC2 comes along.

Doubt I will look as good feeding my baby though lol!!

There really are some ignorant twats out there :(

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 22:06

Are the bf rates very high in Australia morloth?

I wonder why they high there and so low here?

SpikesPet · 20/01/2011 22:32

I have no problem with the picture, dh even said it was rubbish as you couldn't see more booby!

However, ThisFeelsWeird how do you know that Rachel Stevens wasn't at breaking point before she decided to stop bf? Because she's a celebrity is she supposed to tell everyone everything all the time? Maybe she couldn't bf for some reason but doesn't feel the need to let the world know (unusual in most celebrities I know lol).

I think it's great when women bf if they can, but if they can't or don't then why should they be ashamed?

hairfullofsnakes probably because it's so hot over there! I remember BF in my freezing cold house in the middle of winter was torture Wink

Morloth · 20/01/2011 22:41

I don't know what the official rates are. But I know that everyone in my family breastfed as a matter of course (even a couple of our teenage mums). Where I live now (a sort of in between suburb, not posh, not feral [like me really!]) almost everyone BFs but it is all a lot more relaxed, no-one comments, no-one thinks about it. Though I do have to say they don't make a fuss over me in cafes like they used to in SW London! Grin, this could have more to do with DS2 being an annoying little blighter now rather than a sweet newborn than the breastfeeding though. I remembered where I was when my new BIL didn't bat an eyelid at my feeding DS2 in my swimming costume, I was going to pop my sarong over as it entailed pulling to swimmers down from the top but he just continued chatting...

What I have also found interesting is the lack of defensiveness from the couple of mums I know who do bottle feed, once again, no-one comments and cafes have heated bottles without issue.

When I had DS1 in Australia there was a breastfeeding class and the midwife came and checked latches and made sure we were both happy, there was also no formula available (except of course in a medical emergency) you had to bring all your own and sort it all out yourself.

I had DS2 in London and while the care was fine for me, second baby, confident breastfeeder etc. I do wonder how much help would have been available if I was struggling.

I had no idea that Miranda Kerr was married to Orlando Bloom, they didn't even mention him when the photo was released here! Wasn't until I read this thread that I found out.

It is good to be home where everyone makes sense. Wink

Cleofartra · 20/01/2011 22:48

Love the photo. She is glowing - her face is absolutely beautiful with love and happiness.

Made me come over a bit sentimental actually. Blush

jessiealbright · 21/01/2011 01:30
