Is there really outrage over Miranda Kerr's breastfeeding photo?

Hello...

In the news today. Miranda Kerr (wife of Orlando Bloom) has released a picture of herself and her son...

Scroll down the story to see the photo...

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1348809/Orlando-Bloom-wets-baby-head-Miranda-Kerr-pictured-son.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

In the photo Miranda is breastfeeding her son, and I was moved by it and thought what an amazing, beauiful photo and how great that a celebrity is celebrating breastfeeding!

But - in some news articles, the message is that the photo has caused 'outrage' and that some people say this kind of photo should not be shown...

Do some people really feel like that? Does it offend some people? The Royal College of Midwives have said:

?Many women feel awkward about breastfeeding in public these days. But when people see a celebrity nursing their baby, it helps change that.?

I tend to agree and I love this photo - what does everyone else think? Do you love it or hate it and why?!

The only thing about the photo that makes me Envy is how amazing Miranda looks! Wink

She looks lovely, fab pic.
Tiny newborn like that brings a tear to my eye.

Very brave of them to release that pic.
Bravo, the Blooms.

I don't buy the daily express but had a nose whilst at the shops and some writers in there were saying it was not on to have this kind of photo but i was in a rush and did not get the whole jist of it

What is it outraged about?

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 13:44

I think the DM was quite complimentary from what I have seen online...

I think it is great that someone whom we usually see wearing next to nothing and sometimes topless can demonstrate that natural childbirth and bf need not affect body-image in a negative way.

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 13:44

exposed titty?! Grin

Of course it's ridiculous but those that are "outraged" by this kind of photos are beyond reasoning with I feel. It can take a long time to get used to BF outside of the comfort of your own home and having photos of you BF can also seem equally hard to do. We were in the park with DS when he was about 7 months and I asked DH to take a photo of us BF as I realised we hadn't since the photos of him having his first ever feed in hospital. You can't see any boob in picture (not that there would be an issue if you could), it just captures our special time together.

I also see that she is Australian. The impression I get from the Aussie mums that I know is that it is muck more "normalised" over there so having this photo published was hopefully a no-brainer - it's beautiful so the world should get to see it

I think I recall one comment somewhere from someone claiming that she was "sexualising motherhood"

I did have to think WTF?

It's a gorgeous photo.

Dylthan · 20/01/2011 13:47

What a beautiful picture. I think the negative comments are out weighed greatly by the positive ones.

You'll never please everyone someone would have a problem no matter what the picture was.

My dd is 6 months now and it's made me feel Sad at the thought if never getting to feed a little newborn baby again.

ISNT · 20/01/2011 13:47

Oh yes - I saw this yesterday in the evening standard and was rather boggled by the headline that apparently this photo has "reopened the breastfeeding debate". What BF debate? And if there was one, what's it got to do with this picture?

All really odd.

Will try and find article.

Anonymousbird · 20/01/2011 13:48

Sexualising motherhood??

FFS.

I've heard it all now!

mrsrobinredbreast · 20/01/2011 13:50

Lovely photo, not sure I understand the outrage myself.

However, I am pretty outraged by the fact she looks so damn beautiful 2 weeks after giving birth. I barely knew my own name at that stage let alone the location of my make up bag. Yes, that must be what the outrage is about. Grin

here it is.

On rereading it (I was tired!) it says "The photo of her breastfeeding comes a week after child health experts warned that mothers should not feed their babies exclusively on breast milk for the first six months because of the risk of infants developing allergies."

The way BF is presented in the media is really really weird. WTF has a woman BF a newborn got to do with this one piece of research about older babies, and why is it presented in a way that seems to imply babies should be FF?

Weird.

peanutbutterkid · 20/01/2011 13:52

Never heard of her, don't give a Fig who she is, ppl who feel offended are eejits... coz Pic is lovely, ickle baby made me go all teary. :)

Icoulddoitbetter · 20/01/2011 13:53

Oh and to be fair to the DM (which I never am!) the article is positive about the photo. It's the readers comments after that are negative, which is no great surprise....

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 13:53

Mrsrobinredbreast... I barely know my own name now and my baby is nearly a toddler! X

sofaqueenie · 20/01/2011 13:55

That photo is lovely. She looks so happy and content.

ThisFeelsWeird · 20/01/2011 13:55

"Reopening the bfing debate"? What's the debate?

Fantastic to see a celebrity doing the right thing and not giving it a fortnight then switching to bottles as "it's quite tiring" (yes you, Rachel Stevens). I really hope a young mother is inspired to give it a go having seen the picture. Maybe it will go some way to erasing the damage caused by Denise Van Outen's bollocks about her DH wanting to feed the baby and how you can't do it in Stabucks etc etc Bfing is a bit tough and quite tiring?

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 13:56

Totally agree ISNT - they are once more presenting the info wrongly and turning it into a bf/ff debate when it is about weaning! This is so wrong that they do this

I need to go online and read some DM reader comments? What are the negative ones saying?!

OP posts:
taintedpaint · 20/01/2011 13:56

The only outrage of sorts that I have heard about this photo is that the Bloom-Kerr family have been notorious for their privacy and ensurance of a private life, and that this is being seen as slightly hypocritical, and done to publicise MK's own website (where the photo was first published). Which is a fair point to make when you look at the merits of it.

Taking the photo out of that context, I think it's absolutely beautiful. I haven't read anything negative about the shot itself (although I'm sure there are those comments out there).

bruffin · 20/01/2011 13:56

Sorry it's a good photo technically, but extremely posed and the baby looks like it's been plonked there as an afterthought. She is smothered in makeup, not natural at all, she isn't even looking at the baby.

mrsrobinredbreast · 20/01/2011 13:57

Hairfullofsnakes, I hear you. Not sure if it's the toddler or an age thing though.

gingercat12 · 20/01/2011 13:57

Who is Miranda Kerr?

taintedpaint · 20/01/2011 13:57

She's a model ginger.
