Is there really outrage over Miranda Kerr's breastfeeding photo?

Hello...

In the news today. Miranda Kerr (wife of Orlando Bloom) has released a picture of herself and her son...

Scroll down the story to see the photo...

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1348809/Orlando-Bloom-wets-baby-head-Miranda-Kerr-pictured-son.html?ito=feeds-newsxml

In the photo Miranda is breastfeeding her son, and I was moved by it and thought what an amazing, beauiful photo and how great that a celebrity is celebrating breastfeeding!

But - in some news articles, the message is that the photo has caused 'outrage' and that some people say this kind of photo should not be shown...

Do some people really feel like that? Does it offend some people? The Royal College of Midwives have said:

?Many women feel awkward about breastfeeding in public these days. But when people see a celebrity nursing their baby, it helps change that.?

I tend to agree and I love this photo - what does everyone else think? Do you love it or hate it and why?!

The only thing about the photo that makes me Envy is how amazing Miranda looks! Wink

'Sexualising motherhood' Hmm. So you can't be beautiful and BF?

Last time I checked it wasn't only unattractive women who had breasts.

Admittedly, sitting here in my sweaty running kit (water turned off for emergency repairs while I was out), attached to a double pump as DS is at nursery for the afternoon, I'm not exactly a paragon of loveliness at the moment!

CaveMum · 20/01/2011 13:58

I was bemused by one of the comments (by an Anerican lady) that said something like:

"It may be natural but so is farting and I don't expect THAT in public"

[blushes at the thought of offending people whenever I let a crafty fart out while walking down the street] Wink

Flisspaps · 20/01/2011 14:02

Apologies to the DM - saw the link at the top and assumed that's where the outrage was - however it'll be the first thing in a long time that it's not up in arms about Wink

Deciduousblonde · 20/01/2011 14:02

I'm a dab hand at B/feeding and farting at the same time, CaveMum Grin

Seriously..it's a GORGEOUS photo and it actually made me well up, but then I am 6 months pregnant and my boobs are gearing up for that wonderful experience feeding brings!

All the 'outraged' folk can just jog on.

GColdtimer · 20/01/2011 14:05

Agree that the only outrage is that she looks so fantastic. I saw it this morning and thought it was beautiful. DD2 is 10 months and we don't want any more children but that photo gave me a pang.

AlwaysbeOpralFruitstome · 20/01/2011 14:05

Good grief she is gorgeous! What a beautiful picture.

ISNT · 20/01/2011 14:09

Just clicked on the DM link. Why did orlando choose such a cold bar to go to? They've all got their hats on Grin

TheEvilDead2 · 20/01/2011 14:10

TBF on the daily mail Shock when I read this last night there were 4 pages of comments and the vast majority thought it was a great photo of BF, a few tosser said some rubbish but very few really and they were "negged down" by the hundreds.

^I was unimpressed by the spelling of "oralnado" bloom though, and the supposedly "make up" free aspect of the photo!

mamsnet · 20/01/2011 14:11

I'd never heard of her before but was sooo jealous when I saw that photo.. Why didn't I think to have a photo like that taken and remember to wear makeup

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 14:12

Love your post thisfeelsweird !

Did Rachel Stevens really give up after two weeks because it was tiring?

Never liked her anyway!

I don't really see why this has apparently 'sparked off a debate about breastfeeding in public' when in fact the photo was taken in bed, presumably at the couples home?

Unless of course mummy decided to drag the bed out onto the local car park for all to see. Which actually wouldn't surprise me because she gave birth to 9lb 12oz Flynn with no pain relief...what a trooper, you go girl! Grin

ISNT · 20/01/2011 14:15

Grin @ "negged down"

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 14:20

And she is soooo tiny!

Oh I think she looks beautiful :)

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 14:36

She is - so gorgeous and the sight of her little baby suckling has made me sooooo awwwwwe!

Miranda Kerr is my heroine. What a gorgeous photo and to release it publicly will hopefully encourage women who are not sure about bf that it is a wonderful thing to do.

GMajor7 · 20/01/2011 14:49

Agree with all posters that the biggest outrage has to be that she looks so lovely.

I have piccies of me bf-ing DD just after her birth. My face is blotchy and shining with saliva and snot and I look quite the ugliest thing on this planet.

NoWayNoHow · 20/01/2011 14:51

She looks gorgeous and happy, and I couldn't think of a better ad for breastfeeding. Having such an intimate picture of a celebrity like that in the public domain can only help support breathfeeding mothers - it shouts "look at me and how proud I am of what I'm doing".

People who are "outraged" need to take a long walk off a short pier. As they say. Grin

Porcelain · 20/01/2011 14:51

Gorgeous photo, but read the comments, there's your outrage. The Mirror's coverage of this was awful too.

RunawayFishWife · 20/01/2011 14:53

Outrage????

How stupid, she is feeding a baby, she is a mammal, thats what mammals do.

Would have been nice though if the point of the photo was to "show" baby to the world that they could have shown babys face and not so much of the photo been about nicely made up mother

philmassive · 20/01/2011 14:53

I think that it's a beautiful photograph, so nice to see breastfeeding depicted as natural and a pleasure. Smile

BaresarkBunny · 20/01/2011 15:25

There is no way that is Orlando Bloom.

hairfullofsnakes · 20/01/2011 15:36

yes nowaynohow totally agree! Smile

I have a pic of me in much the same position with my DS.

Except I'm about 20 years older, and don't have the gorgeous hair, fine bone structure and translucent skin. I'm not even sure if I'd bathed that day. There'd be outrage if people saw that I can tell you.
