Baroness Warsi taking advantage of her position

In thinking that it hasn't taken Baroness Warsi long to take advantage/abuse? her position by saying that she wants to fight bigotry towards Muslims.

Of all the causes she could have used her position to put her weight behind, I'm dismayed that she has chosen this one.

Perhaps Baroness Warsi will suggest to her fellow muslims that they should have a bit more tolerance of non-muslims around their own dinner tables and then maybe the media wouldn't be so quick to describe them as moderate or radical.

I agree.

As an atheist I also think religion is bonkers. However quoting the Quran/Koran/Q'ran means no more to me than quoting anything from the Bible..whether it be Exodus, Leviticus or any other 'rubbish'

Christians cherry-pick the Bible as much as Muslims do. There aren't so many people up in arms about passages from the Bible as there are about the Quran.

I wonder why?

GORGEOUSX · 20/01/2011 22:27

A lot of people have used the word Bigot on here and it is totally uncalled for. It brings to mind the treatment of the unfortunate lady who was called a Bigot by Prime Minister Brown for raising a concern. Why does asking this question make me a bigot - that's a rhetorical question BTW - been flamed enough for one day.

dobiegirl · 20/01/2011 22:30

I don't think you're a bigot, Gorgeous, You bought up an issue that is totally taboo on Mumsnet; It's pathetic, but you need to know you're always gonna get shouted down and called every name under the sun by certain racists and bigots on here!!

GORGEOUSX · 20/01/2011 22:31

And yes, like the previous posters I, too, am an atheist and think all religious people, no matter what their beliefs are nutters.

I think nutters are especially dangerous when they think they 'doing God's will' - The Yorkshire Ripper said that God told him to kill the prostitutes and I don't know think many people would think HE was sane.

Desiderata- thank you for the ballsy post! I wish there was a like button on here like there is on facebook.

Coalition Whether you think it's relevant or not is moot: for many people the koran provides an animating inspiration for gross acts of violence and therfore must be discussed and examined. Who are you to say that the men who commit crimes in the name of Islam, are actually just using as an excuse? (this is exactly what happened in the cases of Fort Hood and Times Square)

We are getting off track though- the original point wasn't the nature of Islam, it was whether or not Warsi was out of line and I think we've conclusively proved ourselves capable of discussing Islam without falling into the trap of calling all muslims terrorists. Suck that Warsi.

Needle · 20/01/2011 22:37

Gorgeous, the important distinction (and I'm agnostic) is that Christ taught forgiveness- there's nothing in the bible that taught murdering prostitutes, but rather forgiveness. The Koran is explicit in its opinions regarding non muslims.

GORGEOUSX · 20/01/2011 22:38

Thanks Dobiegirl for your message of support. I knew I'd be flamed for posting it and am actually heartened by the number of people who are not spouting out the PC line.

As I've said, I've got friends who are
Muslims and one of my Muslim friends admitted to me that when 9/11 happened there was much joy and celebration amongst certain members of her family - she, being a lovely and beautiful human being, was disgusted - but that was the tone of the dinner party discussion in her household.

OP posts:
GORGEOUSX · 20/01/2011 22:41

Needle I totally agree with you. I didn't word my post very well - sorry - yes, you are absolutely right.

OP posts:
Deciduousblonde · 20/01/2011 22:41

True Needle..but the Bible does mention burning your mother for wearing two different types of cloth, and murdering your neighboour for growing two different drops side by side Shock

Of course they never taught me that in Sunday School.

dobiegirl · 20/01/2011 22:44

Oh god Gorgeous, never ever say 'I've got a friend that is muslim' or anything similar to that, because that will make you number one racist on the planet, worse than any murderer, rapist or peado that ever lived - seriously!!!!

My problem with Warsi, is that she assumes to tell us how and what we must talk about during our (dinner parties [hmmm])evening meals. That is no concern of hers at all, cheeky bint.

GORGEOUSX · 20/01/2011 22:46

LOL!Grin

Deciduousblonde · 20/01/2011 22:46

Gorgeous, I remember after 9/11 my Muslim friends not being joyous at all. They were equally as appalled & upset as myself.

However they didn't half have to suffer some shit after the events from people with very little intelligence who assumed that they, as Muslims, would be happy.

I am reminded of the recent 'burning poppy' incident. Facebook statuses around the country were full of 'Muslims go home' and worse. How many people were burning poppies?

dobiegirl · 20/01/2011 22:51

But Decid, that's YOUR friends, there were plenty of clips on the telly at the time of Muslim folks jumping up and down with joy, then some tried to turn it to their advantage to say the Jews planned it - for heavens sake - as a conspiracy against the Muslims. TUT TUT. (so still trying to make themselves the victims!!)

And people 'have very little intelligence' if they assume that Muslims would be happy that America was bombed by Muslim fanatics!!
You never saw the reaction in Iran then!!

MillyR · 20/01/2011 22:55

What has what Muslims are doing in Iran got to do with what British Muslims think? Hardly any British muslims have any connection to Iran.

My parents are very committed Christians. What goes on in Utah where Christians think it is right to have four wives has nothing to do with what my parents do in the UK. My parents also don't wear thongs to the beach just because it is popular in Brazil - a mostly Christian country.

dobiegirl · 20/01/2011 22:57

What has Mormons got to do with anything?

We are talking about shia In Iran same as plenty of Shia in Britain - I know a lot of Iranian Muslims by the way and a lot of British ones too, trust me there was not a lot of sadness going down!!!!

Deciduousblonde · 20/01/2011 22:58

Yes I know they were my friends, and some aquaintances..but that's the whole point in me mentioning it. Just because you see loads of Muslims jumping up and down in joy over terrorist attacks doesn't mean that all Muslims are.

And unfortunately it seems to be what is seen & reported on the news which colours others judgement on Muslims & Islam in general.

Oh yes, I also had a 'friend' who blames 9/11 on Zionists..often quoting the urban legend of 'No Jews at work day' at the WTC. She is a 'revert' from Christianity, and is as loony as they come.

We no longer speak.. Wink

MillyR · 20/01/2011 22:59

But Shia in one country is not going to be the same as Shia in another. Just as Anglicans in Britain have very different perspective to Anglicans in Africa.

The fact that you know some Iranian Muslims doesn't change the fact that most British Muslims do not have a connection to Iran.

dobiegirl · 20/01/2011 23:01

and who do you think told your mad, looney CHRISTIAN revert, that little line of propaganda? The Jews?, The Americans, come on think about it............

I didn't say all muslims jumped up and down about it, most probably felt the strike of happiness in thier hearts when the enemy 'AMEERIKA' was hit by muslims acting in the name of 'ALLAH', that is all!!!

dobiegirl · 20/01/2011 23:02

Yes Shia are pretty much the same the world over!!!

Needle · 20/01/2011 23:06

MilleR, if 2m million mormons began to trickle in and demand polygamous rights, I'd be concerned about that too. The fact is that there are now 80 sharia courts in the UK passing judgements based on koranic and not British law. The law in Iran is also koranic, therefore we can look to one to give us an idea of what we might be dealing with in the other.

Deciduousblonde · 20/01/2011 23:07

An extemist told her..her new husband (from Afghanistan) and his cronies. Oh, and an article on 'snopes' but she only read half of it.

I don't consider her the 'norm' and luckily neither do a lot of her new found Muslim buddies. In fact she has been pulled up more than once about her extremist views, mainly from Muslims who haven't reverted/converted.

I would rather listen to Warsi than her anyday.

Deciduousblonde · 20/01/2011 23:08

Mormons shouldn't be polygamous anyway.

That was outlawed years ago!

methodsandmaterials · 20/01/2011 23:08

"The Koran is explicit in its opinions regarding non muslims."

Yes needle you are absolutely right. The Koran orders Muslims to be tolerant and respectful of other faiths. What Muslims chose to do is another story altogether (sadly).

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 20/01/2011 23:10

I commend Baroness Warsi for what she said.

I am a Christian married to a Muslim and I do feel that some people and some elements of the press to seem to find it acceptable to make generalised negative comments about Muslims that they would not make about other religions.

Additionally, there seem to be a number of people have the ability to determine someone's religion by looking at them. How do you know they are "muslim boys" as opposed to south asian, arab, north african etc.

Needle please don't waste your time picking random quotes out after all St Paul in Ephesians 5:22 says
"22 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands."

Hardly a model of enlightened thinking towards women.

dobiegirl · 20/01/2011 23:10

Exactly Needle, Same as we should worry that Saudi Arabia Wahabbism theology is being taught to Pakistani children in this country - very, very dangerous!!!
