Yeah whatever,

Now I have your attention.

Its Billie's birthday tommorow. She would have been 19. She died aged 14 from Acute Lymphoblastic Luekemia. She was ill for two years and suffered a great deal. She bore her illness with dignity and bravery and she was the most extraordinary human being I have ever known.

PLEASE if you have ever thought about:
Giving blood
Registering as Bone Marrow Donor
Donating cord blood or
giving your time or money to charity

Would you do it now? Would a look at my DD's photo help to nudge you in the right direction?

www.blood.co.uk/
www.clicsargent.org.uk
www.teenagecancertrust.org.uk
www.anthonynolan.org/

and the www.aclt.org.uk are REALLY struggling right now.

This is my DD billie-josiah.memory-of.com/About.aspx

It is not something I share lightly. I want you all to see what is lost when cancer takes hold.

Everyone can do something, if you cant give blood please ask someone else to do it.

Thank you

just registered with anthony nolan xx

meltedmarsbars · 19/01/2011 18:07

I gave blood today!

FetchezLaVache · 19/01/2011 18:11

So sorry to hear about your beautiful, brave daughter. I am already registered with Anthony Nolan, carry a donor card and will be resuming giving blood at the end of this month! I didn't know about donating cord blood, to my shame, but I will definitely look into that next time round.

emmanana · 19/01/2011 18:23

More birthday bumps for Billie !!!

(toots blow-out streamer in her honour as well!)

chaosisawayoflife · 19/01/2011 18:26

Your post last year on her 18th prompted me to join the bone marrow register. I already gave blood regularly but due to current pregnancy can't at the moment, but will be back on it once DC is 9 months old.

Happy Birthday to your gorgeous girl

Changing2011 · 19/01/2011 18:34

So sorry for your loss. x

Geocentric · 19/01/2011 18:46

More birthday bumps... Hope the day goes gently for you.

Wish I could donate blood but I'm not in the UK and over here they won't let me because apparently my blood is "tainted" from having lived in England during the mad cow disease years... Hmm Go figure!

AlistairSim · 19/01/2011 18:59

Will be thinking of you and Billie.

I already give blood and am on the Anthony Nolan register.
Is there anything else I could be doing?

duchesse · 19/01/2011 19:02

Perennially sorry for the loss of your beautiful girl and of any other child.

Have donated blood since my teens (proud AB- type blood here), but cannot donate bone marrow as am over 40.)

BarbarianMum · 19/01/2011 19:06

Was it you who did a thread about spitting a few months ago (to highlight this issue, obviously)?

If so, you may be pleased to know that it kicked my arse into gear and I am now registered through the Anthony Nolan Trust as a potential bone marrow donor.

BornToFolk · 19/01/2011 19:10

I'm sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing Billie's site.

I actually made an appointment to give blood the other day, my first in years I'm ashamed to say. I used the excuse that I was too busy but thought if I can find the time to get my eyebrows threaded, my hair cut etc I can find the time to give blood.

chillichill · 19/01/2011 19:11

your memorial made me cry. what a beautiful girl. my thoughts are with you and your family.
already blood donor but will sign up for bone marrow. wish I knew about the cord blood. mw told me was expensive to do and hard to arrange to keep for ourselves but did not know I could have donated it. what a waste.

I had never heard of cord donation, I will fill in the form to register for it tonight.

Happy birthday Billie

Am registered to donate blood but too old for marrow. But this has given me a kick up the bum to find somewhere to donate near here as we've moved out of London.

Sending you my thoughts - your DD was so beautiful. Not merely extraordinarily pretty but she has a mischievousness about her smile that breaks my heart every time I see it :(

As ever I am overwhelmed by your kind thoughts and pledges to donate blood, marrow and money.

It was me who did the AIBU to spit thread a while back, any excuse to attract attention Grin

It would be lovely if anyone wants to donate to a charity I have mentioned or any that supports families dealing with cancer. The ACLT are really having a rough time at the moment and they do such important work. The founders lost their own son only a short while ago. They set up the charity to help find a donor when he was diagnosed as a child.

They tried to help find a donor for Billie but she never got into remission.

I really dont mind what you do tbh. Just thinking about the issue and making the effort to spread the word makes such a difference.

For those of you who have been nagged prompted into donating because of Billie, I really cannot express how much it means to me. It helps to make the effort it takes to keep going that little bit easier.

If I think even one person has been helped or saved because my Billie has touched someone - I cant describe it.
Because she was so special. If she was allowed to live she would have set the world alight. She really would have.

She's so beautiful, happy birthday Billie!

I give blood regularly, am on the AN register and will double check next time I donate blood that I am on the BBMR too. (I think I am , signed up years ago so will double check).

Cancer is shit - it's 2 years ago this month that my dad died from an aggressive brain cancer so Cancer Research charities are close to my heart. I shall be doing the Race for Life again this year, and a friend works for Clic Sargent so always support them via her!

I hope tomorrow is a special day for you and not too bittersweet xxx

sadiesadiemarriedlady · 19/01/2011 20:22

Best thread on mumsnet ever, I am on the Anthony Nolan register as it helped save someone I love dearly.

Thank you OP for raising awareness.

Sent off for my Anthony Nolan pack a while ago, following on from one of your previous threads.
Also you have reminded me that I need to check when I can start donating blood again since having DS - think it is fairly soon.
Hope tomorrow is a good a day for you as it possibly can be. xx
