thinking owning a house is a waste of time, as it just gets takenoff you when you get old/put in ahome

one of my aunts has had to go into a care home, serious dementia needs fulltime help

but everything shes worked for and saved for looks liek it will be taken from her.

Frankly I can't see an answer to this one. If so many of us will in the future need so many years of care, at such a high cost, who on earth will pay for it? People's houses will not be enough, taxes will not be enough.

How do we shrink those years to a manageable amount? Let's face it, which of us wants to spend years in a care home?

I want to be healthy and happy till 85, then go suddenly in my sleep. Just need to figure out how....

My gran can't pay for care in her home - she's from a very rural area and there's noone who wants to be a carer. Besides, she needs 24hr care now. And anyway, she's only got £100,000 because she's got a house to sell!

She can't go and live with my mum because:
a) they would drive each other bananas
b) my mum & dad's house would need converted to be suitable and that would mean her being in a home in any case for months and then moving again
c) my mum is in remission from breast cancer and my gran may well outlive her, or at least my mum can't guarantee to be well enough to provide care in anything but the short term.

There are care homes in Edinburgh which need you to guarantee assets of £1.5 mill before you can go on their waiting list - 1k per week isn't top of the range. Mind boggling!

Suzi, it is mind boggling. Have been googling. Hope your Gran gets the care she deserves.
