......just heard that someone I went to school with has just become a grandmother.

I turned 38 last October.

'Shocked' would be appropriate if you were 28. 'Surprised' maybe for 38 :) 19 year average?

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 14/01/2011 12:37

I am 36 , my friend has 3 DC's her mum is only 4 years older than me. It's not uncommon.

JamieLeeCurtis · 14/01/2011 12:38

Blimey

I sometimes feel young around here for having my first child at 30

Summerbird73 · 14/01/2011 12:39

jeez i am 38 this month, but then a girl in my year had a child at 15 which would make her - 23 now!!!

crikey...

kreecherlivesupstairs · 14/01/2011 12:41

I worked with someone who was a grandma at the age of 28. Goodness knows what level of great she's at now. It was about 14 years ago.

JBellingham · 14/01/2011 12:41

Average age of 19 per generation. Not shocking at all.

NancyDrewHasaClue · 14/01/2011 12:42

I think you get to be shocked if they are becoming a great grandmother!

DurhamDurham · 14/01/2011 12:43

It does seem a bit young to become a granndma but not 'shocking'...if this shocks you, you have lead a v sheltered life Grin

stretch · 14/01/2011 12:43

My mum was a grandmother at 40, only 2 years out.
She was 20 with me and I was 20 with DD1.

becaroo · 14/01/2011 12:44

Really????

Perhaps IABU then!

There was a girl who lived near me who had her first child at 13, and quite a few who had them at 16-18 and more who had them at 20-22.

I am positively ancient in having mine at 30 and 35!

stretch · 14/01/2011 12:44

Actually, I think she was a bit more upset to be a grandmother of 5 when she was only 48!! (Sorry mum!)

aPixieInMyCaramelLatte · 14/01/2011 12:45

My mum was a grandmother at 41 (keep thinking itwas 40 but thats wrong lol) She had me at 19, I had my first at 22.

So someone who is a grandmother at 38 could've had their child at 18 and they had their first child at 20. Not that bad really is it.

becaroo · 14/01/2011 12:45

durham sheltered life? Maybe! Smile

I guess I am thinking of myself in that my 2 are still so small...I cant imagine being in that position at my age.

JamieLeeCurtis · 14/01/2011 12:47

Sounds like there's a general trend to have babies at around about the age your mum had you. Wonder if this is true?

HowToLookGoodGlaikit · 14/01/2011 12:49

One of my closest pals is 34 and became a Gran last year.

She was 17 when she had her DD, her DD was 17 when she had her baby. I was 20 when I had my DD and my mum was 20 when she had me! Odd isnt it?

becaroo · 14/01/2011 12:52

JLC I was wondering that tbh...does having a child when you are young mean that child will do the same???

I wonder..........?

stretch · 14/01/2011 12:52

JamieLee I think someone we should have a thread on it!

(not me though, I'm going in the shower!) Grin

CardyMow · 14/01/2011 12:53

My mother was a grandmother at 34! Shock. She had me when she was 18yo, and I had DD when I was 16yo. She is currently 47, I am 29, and she is about to become a grandmother for the fourth time!! Bet that's the youngest on MN.

NacMacFeegle · 14/01/2011 12:53

At DD's old school, a woman the same age as me was picking up her grandchild.

She (and I) were 30.

I was shocked. She was a GM to 3, and had been 26 when the first one arrived.

Colour me judgy. Grin

thumbdabwitch · 14/01/2011 12:54

JLC - I think there has been some kind of study done on exactly that, and it does seem to follow a pattern. Although not always - my mum had me at 23 and I had my first at 40 Grin.

Iklboo · 14/01/2011 12:55

I went to school with a girl who was a grandmother at 32 for the first time, she's now a grandmother of 4 at 41.

stretch · 14/01/2011 12:55

Come to think of it, my friend's mum had her at 15, and then she had her DS at 17, so that makes her a grandma at...... 32!! Shock

DurhamDurham · 14/01/2011 12:57

I had my first dd at 22 and second at 27. My mum had me at 21. My eldest who is now 17 says she isn't going to have a baby until she is 40...which will completely buck our trend (v relieved that she doesn't intend to have a baby any time soon what with her still being at college!)

Portofino · 14/01/2011 12:57

I was shocked to find out the other day that DH's eldest sister is a great grandma! So that makes me a great great Aunt! I am 42.
