I tok my 18 week and 18 month old into Weatherspoons this morning. The lift was out of order so I ended up leaving the baby in the buggy, unstrapping my son and taking him a level (4 steps) to the bar to order my coffee. I took my son because had I left him strapped in the buggy he would have started arching his back and becoming agitated. The buggy was only about 12 feet away from where I was standing at the bar. My boy was toddling about, within a few feet of me while I waited to be served. A lady bought a coffee and was walking past me to her table with it, I saw my son walk round a large pillar and could possibley walk into her path. I warned the lady and said "oooh ! careful" and pointed my son. She walked past him and said loudly "He shouldn't be walking about !"

So I followed her to her seat and asked her why my son should not walk about.

Her "Its not me that says it, its this place."

Me "But YOU said it, what do you expect me to do with him when I place my order ?"

Her "Can't you strap him in a buggy?"

Me "No I will not strap my child down for your convenience>"

Her "I didn't want to step on him"

Me "All you had to do was look where you were going, I warned you he was there."

and then it carried on for another 2 minutes.

So, was I BU ????

I'm gonna get slaughtered, but I am intrigued as to whether or not you think I was out of order.

I find velcro and sellotape very useful restraints for small children. Preferably alongside a sturdy radiator. (don't try this at home unless you are sure the radiator is off, don't want the little blesses to get burnt!)

OnEdge · 11/01/2011 23:14

I got the last word though Grin

TwoIfBySea · 11/01/2011 23:15

YABU only because of the consequences of what could happen by you letting your toddler free where people are carrying items that may harm him.

Not just scalded by tea but even a glass hitting off him - would you really want to take the risk?

I always have my heart in my mouth when I see this, kids running about when people are carrying plates and cups full of hot food/beverages etc. It has nothing to do with kids being allowed to be kids and everything to do with accidents happening.

Take a bit more responsibility. Perhaps, like I did with dts at that age, chose places where you won't be put in that position. He has to learn at some point that the world isn't there for his entertainment.

rhoobabble · 11/01/2011 23:17

Very stressful going anywhere with those age kids. Having worked for Wetherspoons as a manager type they do aim generally at the family market and therefore kids should be expected. However, following the lady? mm lucky she wasnt a nutter and didnt hit you. I was incredibly and manically overprotective when i had recently had a baby (hormones take a damn sight longer than 18wks to settle) - bit of a surge? xxx YABU but I get why :)

OnEdge · 11/01/2011 23:17

But why cant she just walk round him, the world isnt there for old ladies to walk round snapping at people willy nilly either and expecting them to just accept it.

"shunt keep kids in buggies like that its not nice"

You're not KEEPING him in the buggy, though - how long does it take to pay for a drink?!?

MadameDefarge · 11/01/2011 23:19

Personally, I think all children should be introduced to the dangers of hot liquid by a finely tuned programme of unexpected encounters...

  1. Cold Juice on head
  2. warm porrige on face
  3. Lukewarm tea on hand
  4. warmish hot chocolate split casually on highchair table
  5. Hot milk in sippy cup

etc...

culminating in a frenzy of hot coffee shot from various corners of a room while they have to dodge it like the little troopers they are!

penguin73 · 11/01/2011 23:19

Definite retraction there....!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 11/01/2011 23:19

You win, OP. You can keep this up longer than we all can, I'm sure. You deserve a medal for persistence.

Off to bed now....

OnEdge · 11/01/2011 23:19

Yes.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 11/01/2011 23:21

Grin at Madamedefarge! Glad I reloaded the page to see that one, did make me chuckle.

OnEdge, I am so pleased that you have finally admitted it to yourself " I feel fucking evil TBH". This is the first step. You've done really well. Grin

penguin73 · 11/01/2011 23:21

Taking my teddy home, night all....

OnEdge · 11/01/2011 23:21

I ought to buy him a Hanibal Canibal type mask and put him in a straight jacket then all the old ladies can wobble around weatherspoons until their heart's content.
