I was singing baa baa black sheep at rhyme time in the library only last week, so bollocks to everyone who says it's been banned. Why do you keep saying it, it's not true?

EricNorthmansMistress · 10/01/2011 16:45

altinkum, please, please tell me the name of the school where children sing 'baah baah ethnic sheep'. I'm begging you Grin

TragicallyHip · 10/01/2011 16:48

Actually I don't really use it. Although I used to call Morrison's Pikey

So your DC's school teaches them 'baah baah ethnic sheep'

Please confirm that. I'm seriously ineterested...

bumpsoon · 10/01/2011 16:51

I very much use the the term 'pikey' as a term of endearment for my friend ,its as a result of a misunderstanding that occured where certain people believed she was a traveller ,she isnt ,but as i said she is close friends ( attends weddings, christenings etc) of travellers . I would never use the term in reference to anyone else ,other than my friend . Also the travellers ,who have single handedly kept unilever afloat during the recession , call her a pikey because of the abject squalor she lives in .

bumpsoon · 10/01/2011 16:53

Ooooo am i now being racist by suggesting that travellers are fastidious about cleanliness in their homes ?

2shoes · 10/01/2011 16:55

he sounds like a racist plonker.

BuzzLightBeer · 10/01/2011 16:55

Why, are you trying to be? Hmm

EricNorthmansMistress · 10/01/2011 16:56

bumproon

I didn't know 'pikey' referred to travellers. I have only heard it used in the same way as 'chav'. Neither are nice terms, but I am Blush because I'm pretty sure I've used it (not referring to a person) in public and people probably think I'm a racist twat. Shit.

FabbyChic · 10/01/2011 17:05

Serendip yes I can, people have taste's don't they, like some men like slim women, some women like bald men. It is a matter of taste.

FabbyChic · 10/01/2011 17:06

I've never used the term pikey, the kids dad does but he does reside in Essex.

SerendipitousHarlot · 10/01/2011 17:07

Oh. Silly me. I thought it was about fancying the person. I don't think I've ever fancied, been out with, or slept with a blonde person - but I couldn't categorically say that I never would.

SerendipitousHarlot · 10/01/2011 17:07

Oh well, Fabby, that's alright then. If he lives in Essex, he has every right to use a racist term Hmm

Honestly, this thread is winding me up.

charliesmommy · 10/01/2011 17:11

I think the term Pikey is (probably deliberately) often misunderstood by those who are looking to find a reason to cry victimisation.

In the south east of England it is not aimed just at travellers, it is a word used to describe the sort of people that are usually on Jeremy Kyle, and basically means the same as calling someone a chav.

For example, someone who shops in Lidl, drinks White Lightning Cider, and looks like Waynetta Slob, or Vicky Pollard would be labelled a "bit of a pikey".

scurryfunge · 10/01/2011 17:13

I think if anyone is deliberately misunderstanding the thread, charliesmommy, it is you.

SerendipitousHarlot · 10/01/2011 17:13

I disagree charliesmommy I am from the south east of England, and know very well that it's a term used to describe a gypsy or a traveller. Whether it's now used to describe someone a bit chavvy is kind of irrelevant - it's where the roots of the offensive term lie that is the issue.

SerendipitousHarlot · 10/01/2011 17:14

How dreadfully selfish of those people to deliberately misunderstand the term as racist. Fucking chip on their shoulder, that's what it is Hmm

KurriKurri · 10/01/2011 17:16

I consider it racist, because it originated as an insulting word for Romanies who are an ethnic group and implies that thieving and criminal behaviour is synonymous with being Romany.

Which any one with any sense knows isn't true.

For a policeman to put a racist remark on FB is very stupid, and I hope he gets into trouble - prejudice IMO leads to poor policing. I don't agree with any 'all police are like that' sentiments. I've found the police to be very helpful whenever I've needed them. But you get the odd stupid person in any profession.

Slambang · 10/01/2011 17:16

Fabby
am flaberghasted by the idea that it would be ok for a copper to spout racist insults as long as its to friends who will think its funny.

If he had said fucking Pakis instead would that also be ok in your opinion?

Really, altinkum. So if I called a white friend a n***, it's ok because they're not black? Worraloadofshit.
