I have just seen a police officer say on his Facebook page "has finally got my car to move and has now found a great big fucking scratch on the door, pikeys....."

Nah I'm sorry, just because people don't get WHY 'pikey' is racist doesn't mean it's not -

Personally I'd have laughed if I saw someone write that, specifically a copper.

I have and always will be of the opinion that coppers do that job because they get to beat the crap out of people and get away with it.

I've had my fair share of contact with police with an abusive ex partner and have always found coppers to be ignorant, rude and make you feel like a small insignificant individual.

They are too up their own arses and not approachable at all.

Im not sure 'travellers' can be seen as a race ,given that there are so many quite distinct and ethniclly diverse groups who are under the umbrella of 'traveller'. However as a police officer ,your 'friend' should have a greater grasp of what is and isnt acceptable to say on facebook ,this clearly isnt.
I call my best friend a pikey , she is close friends with several true travellers and even they call her one ,due to the state of her dwelling , are they racist or ironic ?

I also never said I was his friend or otherwise. Some people don't have as tight privacy settings as others and you can see their pages without being their friends.

Pikey is legally considered to be in the same league as N*er. The word pikey is a derogatory reference to gypsies and Travellers that implies they are all criminals, robbers and con artists. So either you are calling all gypsies and travellers low life or you are saying somebody is low life because they act like a gypsy or traveller. Is the latter better than the former? I think not!

If you have these opinions you should keep them to yourself not air them in public.

bumpsoon, travellers are a distinct ethnic group so the correct word is racist. Why do you call your best friend a pikey? I've met travellers who use the word pikey, but it's pretty much like a lesbian using the word dyke or somesuch. But if you say it to your mate with affection then that's between you, as long as you are aware that it could cause offence and be misunderstood if you were heard by someone else.
