To prefer well groomed people to scruffs?

So, a friend and I were discussing over lunch today how we felt about meeting others that were perhaps less groomed than us.

Where I work, I have to deal with people that perhaps are not the cleanest or look like they have just rolled out of bed and have not even and wash - basic hygiene costs nothing. It makes me go bleugh.

Does this sort of thing bother you or am I being over sensitive?

I'm sure it's a matter of degree. Where I live and at dc's schools, I'm very low key and probably regarded as neat and tidy. Where I work I'm probably regarded as pretty well groomed and pretty well dressed and take a little care to fit in.

Providing people are clean I don't really think it matters what they look like but it does matter if others feel the need to comment/complain needlessly.

I'm a clean scruff. I don't tend to judge other folk on how they look. I'm not more impressed by a person because they are wearing labels or tell me their make up is Dior.

flyingvisit · 09/01/2011 10:05

I used to be one for skirts, heels and glamour. I am now clean but the scruffiest mum at the gates. To the point where people have been shocked that I work, and at the fact I am a "professional".

If people want to avoid me, they can. They are missing out on getting to know a cracking person!

Oh I wear makeup and brush my hair but im one of these people who looks like the makeup is gome by the afternoon.

Megatron · 09/01/2011 10:12

Grin Nope, sorry Shiney!

ShoppingDays · 09/01/2011 10:16

flyingvisit I like your post :) I sometimes wonder whether "dressing down" is a simple way of finding out who likes you without the extras of makeup and so on. If someone only wants to be friends with me if I am "groomed" then what about the days when this doesn't happen? Are they going to criticise, be shocked, make horrified comments to others?

ImeldaSnowboots · 09/01/2011 10:17

Clean but scruffy here too Grin, am always a bit suspicious of 'overly groomed' people, tend to feel won't have much in common, but try not to be too closed-minded about it. Some of my best friends are well-groomed Wink

ShoppingDays · 09/01/2011 10:17

(again, basic cleanliness aside!)

TragicallyHip · 09/01/2011 10:17

I used to work with a lovely girl who would only wash her hair twice a week as she thought it ruined her hair. It did look a bit skanky and stuck to her face (it was short).

She did always wear lovely clothes and make up though.

The only time I go out with out a shower is when I drop Ds off at nursery 2 mornings a week. Only because I come home straight away and have one then.

I'm the same as ChippingIn (knew I liked that girl :) ) but I do wear makeup.

I always wear jeans. I live in a rural area (we're always hiking and mucking about in fields),have a small child and my job is chasing around another small child with ASD, so really skirts aren't on the menu :)

I'm always clean, certainly. My daily afternoon respite is taking a looooong hot shower with delicious smelling body wash and shampoo.

(Also have to admit that in the winter I use self-tanner. I glow otherwise, I honestly do! Blush)

flyingvisit · 09/01/2011 10:39

I use mac but im still scruffy.

CheerfulYank · 09/01/2011 10:40

I love LeQueen too, though she has taken away my delight in my sea shell filled apothecary jars.

I still can't figure out whether this thread is about being clean or clothes/makeup/perfume/shoes/blowdried hair etc. etc.

bellavita · 09/01/2011 10:44

Yay for LeQueen!

Shiney has indeed some beautiful make-up. She let me use her Laura Mercier eyeshadows last night.

Yay for Shiney!

flyingvisit · 09/01/2011 10:44

I have that hair that I can brush and it immediately looks unbrushed. Its fine and wavy. In fact brushing makes it frizzy.
Sure I could use product but I dont always have time (or the inclination).
I come from a family of girls who are born to have that natural look. We are all small and young looking and looke better "ungroomed". I always think i look like Ive dresed up in my mum's clothes and look silly. Naturally scruffy im afraid.

tethersend · 09/01/2011 10:47

What is this brush hair of which you all speak?
