To prefer well groomed people to scruffs?

So, a friend and I were discussing over lunch today how we felt about meeting others that were perhaps less groomed than us.

Where I work, I have to deal with people that perhaps are not the cleanest or look like they have just rolled out of bed and have not even and wash - basic hygiene costs nothing. It makes me go bleugh.

Does this sort of thing bother you or am I being over sensitive?

No, I can't stand dirty and smelly. No excuse in my book...I'm a two showers a day girl. But I don't "get" too well-groomed people. They tend to talk about shite I'm not interested in.
I do like the studenty/scruffy look though. But they have to be scrupulously clean underneath.

ivykaty44 · 08/01/2011 22:20

your loss, thank goodness you do think like that though as it means you leave those people alone that may have a lot more to offer someone who isn't quite as quick to judge every scruff

Depends on where you are i dont dress for a festival or rock concert in the same way as a trip to the theatre or to a decent restaurant.

Stase · 08/01/2011 22:32

Two showers a day! Unless you have a very physical job, there's no need for that. Is there..?

Stase, yes, one before work one on arrival back at home, the same as you change your clothes.

skankyVswish · 08/01/2011 22:36

I shower twice a day too. I do not like to go to work unshowered or go to bed without one either.

What a waste of water... As it goes I don't change my clothes when I get in from work, because there's only about a hour before I get into pyjamas! But maybe I am naturally more fragrant than some of you Wink Grin

TrillianAstra · 08/01/2011 22:47

Everyone knows that GetOrf washed her bedsheets every day - now that's a waste of water!

ChippingIn · 08/01/2011 22:48

Clean but 'scruffy' here - I love jeans, combats, t-shirts, jumper dresses etc - I hate fussy clothes, I hate feeling 'all trussed up'. Very clean, shiney clean hair, no make up, jeans, t-shirt & flats... don't really care what anyone else thinks Grin

Stase · 08/01/2011 22:51

I find over-groomed-ness really unattractive in a man, now I think of it. That and being good at dancing, so unmanly in my eyes. DH has toothbrush, shower gel and deodorant, no other toiletries at all. Although using them slightly more often would be nice, I have no time for men who moisturise and use hair products.

squarehat · 08/01/2011 22:58

ChippingIn - I think we would get on well you have just described my wardrobe :)

I dont mind scruffy people (sometimes I feel I am one of them) I like scruffy but non smelly men. Very well groomed just doesnt do it for me, give me rigger boots and dirty jeans anyday Wink

Cant say I prefer one or the other tho. It would depend on the individual [diplomatic emoticon]

bellavita · 08/01/2011 22:59

Chipping, I like jumper dresses etc and casual clothes, my hair is always clean too.

LoopyLoopsIsNoLongerFestive · 08/01/2011 23:00

Yes, clean is important, clean clothes too, but I tend to prefer people who wear casual clothes to those who spend their weekends in suits.
Designer handbags are beyond me. I genuinely can't tell the difference. Colour and style s far more important.
Nice perfume has much more impact than expensive makeup.
Couldn't live without my GHDs.
Couldn't live without my hoodies.

mutznutz · 08/01/2011 23:03

I know I shouldn't make snap judgements but I always view the perma-immaculate folk as feeling a bit insecure about themselves or their relationships.

Some days I dress up a bit...other days I crawl out of bed and don the nearest outfit to me Lol.

Gay40 · 08/01/2011 23:03

For a pair of scruffs we have a phenomenal amount of toiletries. Plenty of designer stuff too, but still look like overgrown skater bois (or a fat ninja in my case)

Spenguin · 08/01/2011 23:08

My DH brushes his teeth after eating anything. Leaving the house means me standing at the door tapping my foot and huffing and puffing whilst he's faffing with the toothbrush, taking the shoe-trees out of his shoes, combing his hair etc etc

When he was in his teens he would brush his teeth after every course...in a restaurant.

As for me, I'm bipolar. Happy to slob about in leggings, no bra, unkempt hair, fluffy socks and stains all over me whilst I'm in the house. I chuck on a coat to go to the shop etc. However, I like to get really dressed up sometimes - platform 5 inch stiletto heels, lung-restricting dress, full hair and make up. Then I get home, pig out and watch TV in bed.

I have a thing for designer handbags. However, I don't get people who use fakes. The whole point of them is the quality, the durability. Why be something you're not - especially when nobody's heard of "Channel"?

mutznutz I agree. What are they trying to hide under that primly ironed outfit and primly ironed hair, eh?

reelingintheyears · 08/01/2011 23:13

I always liked a hippy,
Long hair,jeans and scruffy
Clean teeth though Grin

reelingintheyears · 08/01/2011 23:17

Spenguin......Chanel.

I thought I was doing okay. Went into teenage son's room ( a typical pit, he's no neat freak) , spoke for a while and left. He called me back in a hysterical manner to 'please get that thing out of here I dont know what it is but it looks scary ' It was a spidery looking ball of hair with bits of straw and stuff hanging from it. I removed it and said 'well. i dont know where that came from ' He replied instantly ' it dropped off you. Things like that are always dropping off you ' Note to self - must groom a little more. Stop relying on dog licking it all off.
