to fart in company in my own home

My SIL is staying with us at the moment. Yesterday I got trapped wind and it was really painful. Rather than suffer the pain, when it was ready to release itself I let it. Rather a lot I'm afraid Blush. My DH was disgusted that I had done that in front of his sister but I didn't want to leave the room in my own home and I was in pain!

Was I BU or did he have a point?

I cannot comment, but this made me smile! :o

conkertree · 06/01/2011 19:56

Yabu - maybe a wee trip to the bathroom or at least anon room might have been nice.

A wee release by mistake doesn't bother me, but intentional ones do!

hmc · 06/01/2011 19:57

On bleurgh - I am sure you will have your ardent supporters but I would have been revolted

hmc · 06/01/2011 19:57

'Oh' bleurgh

AlistairSim · 06/01/2011 19:58

Do you like your SIL?

How did she react?

Hulababy · 06/01/2011 20:00

Well it isn't very polite is it?

FabbyChic · 06/01/2011 20:00

That is real rude, you should have left the room.

You made yourself out to look a right chav.

taintedsnow · 06/01/2011 20:01

Ooh you made me laugh! But YABVU. Yuck.

WimpleOfTheBallet · 06/01/2011 20:02

Toilets are there for a purpose.

NewYearNewPants · 06/01/2011 20:03

Disgusting. Couldn't you have gone to the toilet? Must be grim round yours.

SixtyFootDoll · 06/01/2011 20:03

LOL

But If i was your SIL I would not have been too amused

BettyCash · 06/01/2011 20:03

Unreasonable's not the word

westlake · 06/01/2011 20:06

YANBU!!!!! for god sake, we're all human!! It's not like she's a stranger.

I would hate to be at home and feel too uncomfortable to fart FGS. People are very much 'at home' when they visit me and can leave their airs and graces at the door!

That's not to say I'd shit with the bathroom door open or anything Smile but come on.... a fart?? no biggy.

ThreadBareCarpet · 06/01/2011 20:06

Ha ha ha!Grin You need to ask? Seriously, you don't think it is a tad impolite?

Made me think of the tv programme 'The Royles' (I think) the Dad would just lift his arse Smile

MilliONaire · 06/01/2011 20:12

Yes I would be bothered by this! Reminds me of a time, many years ago when I was young, free & single and myself and a good friend met this good looking, friendly guy one evening. We got chatting and he seemed nice, fun company etc. He invited us to both go to his place for a meal a few days later. We show up with wine etc, he opens the door in full karate gear, all sweaty from his exercise, he heads off to shower, there is no sign of dinner. We crack open the wine and have a glass. He seemed a bit annoyed that we had opened the wine but got on with making the pasta (really a no effort dinner) we ate sitting on the floor around a coffee table for some reason and he repeatedly farted throughout the evening - he would literally lift one bum cheek off the floor, trumpet loudly all the while continuing with whatever he was saying [shocked] The first time it happened I thought it was a dreadful mistake and that he must be mortified. But, no, he did it again and again. In the end we were in convulsions of silent, shoulder shaking giggles and I could NOT look at my pal as we would have exploded! We made our hasty excuses and never saw him again. It was pretty off-putting. I guess he had the same philosophy as the OP - his house, why shouldn't he fart like a trooper in it? Hmm

Nanny0gg · 06/01/2011 20:32

YABU.
In fact you were rude.
If you were in that much discomfort that you had to do it you should have gone to the loo.

Vallhala · 06/01/2011 20:35

YABU. Behaving with no consideration for others like this shows a lack of respect and is very impolite.

MeowyChristmasEveryone · 06/01/2011 20:41

Oh my life, some people are far too hung up on normal bodily functions!!!

You fart, you excuse yourself and you get on with your evening. The idea that you should trek to the bathroom for a fart is ridiculous.

A fart is an occasion for much hilarity and congratulations in our house. Loosen up, guys!! (No pun intended!!!)

GeorgeEliot · 06/01/2011 20:46

YABU. I would (and frequently do) fart in front of dh, but no-one else. It's bad manners.

charliesmommy · 06/01/2011 20:46

YABU .. how uncouth and disrespectful to a guest.. no matter who it is.

Surely you could have gone into a different room.

If my husband had done it while we had visitors, I would have been embarassed.

alemci · 06/01/2011 20:51

I am mortified. I would never do this in front of a guest and would leave the room and head to the loo. yuk.

Onetoomanycornettos · 06/01/2011 20:53

My husband farts so loudly, other family members sitting in another room can hear it, it's so embarrassing. As someone else has said, an accidental one is one thing, but deliberately, NO!!!!!

hmc · 06/01/2011 22:06

meow - it is nothing to do with loosening up (very unintentionally apt) - perhaps the smell of an eggy sulphorous fart does nothing to you but it makes me dry heave; can't help my reaction; it is an involutary response to a potent and unpleasant smell

I had major trumpiness on New Year's eve when I had guests for dinner - i was going up and down to the kitchen all evening so whilst there would nip into the utility room, fling open the back door and point my offending rear to the garden and let rip with gusto, shaking my booty a bit to make sure there was no 'after waft' before shutting the back door and returning to civilisation

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 06/01/2011 22:10

YABU

If you had an itchy fanjo, would you have scratched it in front of her? If you needed a dump, would you have done it with the door open whilst carrying on a conversation with her? If you had a huge, irritating bogey would you have picked it out in front of her?
They are all natural functions, but you kind of just don't, do you? Same with farting, you manky mare.

MrsPennySworth · 06/01/2011 22:13

ITS JUST A FART!!!!!!!
