to fart in company in my own home

My SIL is staying with us at the moment. Yesterday I got trapped wind and it was really painful. Rather than suffer the pain, when it was ready to release itself I let it. Rather a lot I'm afraid Blush. My DH was disgusted that I had done that in front of his sister but I didn't want to leave the room in my own home and I was in pain!

Was I BU or did he have a point?

Good grief some people are very uptight.

I fart in front of (good )friends, with a prior apology usually. They think it's hilarious.

honeybehappy · 06/01/2011 23:42

ffs it's a fart!!!!

2rebecca you sound like a twat!!!

nurseblade · 06/01/2011 23:47

YANBU, it's only a fart. If you'd farted in her face it might have been a bit unreasonable.

Aims80 · 06/01/2011 23:54

It depends what you mean by rather a lot! If it was one fart and not smelly then ok.. lol

Liv77 · 07/01/2011 00:05

YANBU, You were in your own home with family and weren't to know it was going to be a massive one, as long as you apolgised if it stank. You said your DH wasn't impressed, what was your SIL's reaction, did no one ever fart in their house?
I agree with nurseblade, if you farted in her face and then wafted it, that would have BU. Grin

TimeForACHEEKYWine · 07/01/2011 01:48

i only do it in front of DH and kids, sometimes my sister and mum but thats it. Blush

i had bad IBS last night and the trapped wind was awful and the smell...........eurgh put me off!! Grin Dh said i was sleeping on the sofa - i didnt Grin

tyzer2001 · 07/01/2011 07:45

I only do it in front of people I like.

Not sure what that says about me really... Hmm

MrsPennySworth · 07/01/2011 07:54

I think the use of the word 'chavvy' is more degrading and uncivilised than passing wind!

theevildead2 · 07/01/2011 08:50

YABU, you are meant to create a nice atmosphere for guests. Not one that litterally stinks of shit.

newmum001 · 07/01/2011 09:17

YANBU trapped wind is awful. I'd have done the same!

NestaFiesta · 07/01/2011 09:27

YABU. If I was your guest and you did thjat in front of me, I woudl just think its was really bad manners and uncivilised. Yes, farting is part of life, and you're in your own home, but that really is gross. Trapped wind is painful and when I have it I go to the loo as you never if it's going to be whisper or a shout!

People really don't want to hear and smell the air from inside your arsehole.

MackerelOfFact · 07/01/2011 09:28

If the telly was on or there was music playing and nobody was really paying attention, YANBU. What she doesn't know won't hurt her.

If you were sitting quietly chatting, or worse, eating, YABU!

MmeLindt · 07/01/2011 09:32

Yabu

I fart in front of my DH and our DC, and in front of my parents and brother. Would leave the room rather than fart in front of anyone else, even SIL and we are very close.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 07/01/2011 09:42

You might have been in your own home, but you were in company - we usually try and show the best side of ourselves to guests, don't we? Or is it okay to just let it all hang loose?

Maisiethemorningcat said it all for me:
If you had an itchy fanjo, would you have scratched it in front of her? If you needed a dump, would you have done it with the door open whilst carrying on a conversation with her? If you had a huge, irritating bogey would you have picked it out in front of her?
They are all natural functions, but you kind of just don't, do you? Same with farting, you manky mare.

Or if you had some fluff in your belly button would you pick it out?
Squeeze a spot that was bothering you?
Spit out a bit of sick that came up into your throat? (I expect your SIL struggled with that one).

How gross.

Ha ha, just laughed my way through this entire thread.

Have to say that I don't fart often (honestly!) and defo not 15 times a day, but both me and DH make a real effort not to even trump infront of each other - and that's obviously in our own home. I just don't see the need to be honest to be smelling the contents of my husband's digestive tract Grin

That said, I am pregnant at the moment and just started suffering with horrendous heartburn and trapped wind, but weirdly it always comes out as a burp, which is much less offensive IMO. I did have to ask DH to wind me over his shoulder the other night like a baby until I could bring a little bit up - I was in agony though and couldn't think of a way to do it myself Blush
