In being surprised that apparently 98% of UK women under 25 have no pubic hair at all?

Is that true?

A friend who is a practice nurse says she presumes it's just a fashion. None of her women under 25 who come for smear tests have any pubic hair.. all shaved, shorn, waxed to nada.

Obviously that's fine but it seems a little universal to me. Aren't there any rebels out there?
Is it just for the boys they do it?

Does the image not come from porn originally?

Please don't preach at me Dittany. Daughter of Greenham here. I can make my own choices, thanks all the same.

As you were....

theevildead2 · 05/01/2011 08:51

I shave mine, when I am going for an exam!

The rest of the time I let my fur fly.

PlanetEarth · 05/01/2011 08:53

I'm not sure how men can like the feel of it if it's shaved off. Isn't it scratchy? Confused

Bonsoir · 05/01/2011 08:54

"Do men shave off their pubes for hygiene etc? I don't think they do."

Yes they do, dittany. Men also have back waxes, nostril waxes etc. Depilation has increased massively among both women and men in recent years. I don't know why you have such an issue with grooming - all human civilisations have groomed their bodies since time immemorial.

CognitiveDissident · 05/01/2011 08:59

I'm with dittany

It's a media/porn/beautymyth thing (IMO they're all heads of the same monstrous hydra)

I wasted many years fiddling round with various degrees of pubic topiary, but have finally decided life is too short, and if a man comes over all faint at the sight of a few hairs then he's not worth bedding in the first place.

And hygiene ? WTF? That's what soap and water were invented for.

theevildead2 · 05/01/2011 08:59

Bonsoir is right, also apparently a lot of guy shave it because it makes their package look bigger? SO they do it for women and looks.

Dh trims a bit because I asked him to and he voluntarily does his underarmss because he is a sweat monster. I don't see it as only a female thing.

Macrophage · 05/01/2011 09:03

I used shave it all oft it when I was young and sad and thought that pleasing men was vital to my happiness

Now I am old and lazy dignified I can't be bothered with it.

Dh doesnt care either way.

I once had relations with a American bloke who was circumcised and had no pubes.. It was like fucking a ken dolly, all smooth and freaky and unnatural.. I think he might have spurred me on to my 'be proud of your bush' movement.

WestleyAndButtockUp · 05/01/2011 09:08

Dittany, do you feel the same about under-arm hair? That its removal is porn based?

Just curious, not picking a fight.

Does porn regularly focus on shaven armpits ?

I always thought women shaved their pits to stop them selves sweating and smelling ?

Blimey, I am lucky if the hair on my head gets brushed once a day, I cant be faffing about with my undercarriage!

Mind you, since being PG I havent seen it, it could have turned orange and I wouldnt know, but even in normal non pg circs I just leave it to roam free with occasional snips with the nail scissors if it threatens to take over my whole body! :o

SnowyGonzalez · 05/01/2011 09:15

I actually think bare underarms look more child-like as well, but since hairy pits often = stink bomb factory I don't have such a problem with this, and shave my own pits when I get the chance.

So ChippingIn, I'm sorry that you feel insulted by my earlier comment, however, the context, which you appear to have missed, was a question about whether shaving one's muff is related to our obsession with youth. If someone at 50 does everything in their power to look wrinkle-free, it would be reasonable for a healthily bewrinkled Wink person to say, by contrast, "well I don't feel the need to look like a child." The wrinkle-free 50-something may, like you, find that statement distasteful, but that doesn't make it unworthy of consideration. The same goes for bare muffs.

So is it in part about youth? The porn industry is overflowing with artificial bodies, not only exaggerated versions of femininity/ masculinity, but also people trying desperately to avoid growing old. So it is a fair comment to suggest that hairlessness in porn is a part of the obsession with youth.

Bogeyface · 05/01/2011 09:17

Riven, my friends daughter has CP and she does get in a bit of a mess down there, especially at that time of the month, but as waxing etc is painful and the cream can be sore, she leaves it as it is. They just tend to wash down there each time rather than change her as you would a baby with wipes etc.

I have to admit its not something that I had thought about having to deal with til she mentioned it. My only experience of CP is with my own son and my nephew so not really an issue.

EdgarAleNPie · 05/01/2011 09:20

hairy pits are smelly.
if your minge smells like that, by all means shave it!

otherwise - who the hell is looking?

Again with the Hairy=Smelly/Dirty/Unhygenic meme...do none of you wash?

Snark aside, I don't shave my armpits OR use deodorant and I don't stink. If I get sweaty I wash and change my clothes, rather then covering it up with chemicals.

gordyslovesheep · 05/01/2011 09:29

I find it creepy to be honest - do men really like having sex with women who look like little girls?

I like mine neat but there - because I am an adult woman - and we have pubic hair!

cumbria81 · 05/01/2011 09:30

I am 29, so not young, and have an aversion to body hair.

I shave my legs every day, my arm pits every other day and trim my lady garden (yes, I do have hair down there, I don't want to look like a child) every day as well so that it is tidy.

It's not "for the men", it's purely wanting to feel clean and neat.

emmyloulou · 05/01/2011 09:31

I think it's insulting to say it's all about porn, and wanting to look like a child.

One of my ex's used to pester me to do it all the time I never did and I got shot. He was a real twat tbh and yes his requests were based on porn, if only I knew then what I know now.....

But after my c-section where they took a fair bit off, I realised I liked it, so when my scar had heald it was short, I gradually went shorter and shorter.

It felt nice and just cleaner, more comfortable for me and tbh sex feels better for it. DH genuinely could't care either way and he has never asked me or suggested I have my pubes a certain way. He isn't a porn user either. We both used to when we were younger and came across it, it's all changed since we have got older and have dc's though.

I think it's the oppostie of feminism when women can tell other women they clearly don't know their own mind and it's all about the menz and their influence. Women can and do think for themselves on issues such as this.

Bogeyface · 05/01/2011 09:31

I do try to shave my pits when I remember but at the moment I think pg hormones have gone mad because it growing v fast and I dont smell! I wash, its a neat trick and if you do it often enough, you dont need to worry about stinking!

emmyloulou · 05/01/2011 09:32
