In being surprised that apparently 98% of UK women under 25 have no pubic hair at all?

Is that true?

A friend who is a practice nurse says she presumes it's just a fashion. None of her women under 25 who come for smear tests have any pubic hair.. all shaved, shorn, waxed to nada.

Obviously that's fine but it seems a little universal to me. Aren't there any rebels out there?
Is it just for the boys they do it?

Does the image not come from porn originally?

I always find if I go totally bare underneath, I end up sore or with thrush. My first exh was a complete pervert and always wanted me to shave bare and said he'd shave off him disgusting mustache if I did, so I did it once for him and he reneged, I got thrush and wouldn't go to the docs because in those days you had to be tested in order to get a prescription for thrush (no over counter buying back then), so I had to lie and say I was working and couldn't get in.

Done it a few times since, but always the same so I'd never do it again!

NewYearNewSolo · 05/01/2011 01:02

Meant to say that I was totally embarrassed about the bare chuff, hence not going to docs! It was the mid 80's!!!

giyadas · 05/01/2011 01:12

rodformyownback - I love it, so if I don't shave and DP has a slight beard, it's a very good way of keeping him in. Grin

rodformyownback · 05/01/2011 01:20

Like velcro? Crikey. Hadn't thought of that.

babeinthewood · 05/01/2011 01:21

yuk! I am 25 and I hate shaving it!!

although weirdly my husband (hes 48) randomly started doing it once, didnt tell me so I er got a bit of a surprise one night! worried he was having a nervous breakdown or a midlife crisis for a while and I still find it weird but he seems to quite like it - weirdo!

each to their own I suppose I just hate all the sorness and constant thrush when I do it so I dont :)

rodformyownback · 05/01/2011 01:25

Haven't asked my lil sis about her carpet munching phobia for a couple of years now - me and middle sis took the piss out of her for it a bit much so it became a taboo subject. Will have to raise it gently, perhaps I'll ask her BF...

giyadas · 05/01/2011 01:31

rod - oh, I already did. Her boyfriend said, and I quote "mmmpph mmppphhh mmmmmmpppphhh" Grin

rodformyownback · 05/01/2011 01:36

Giyadas I was about to go to sleep but am now pmsl! And have a horrible image in my head of you popping your head round the door saying "so how's that phobia going - oh, I'll leave you to it..."

rodformyownback · 05/01/2011 01:40

At uni a generously begardened friend once took a photo of her boyfriend looking up at her with a Kaiser-like moustache. There was none of her in the picture so you'd never have guessed what it was. She was furious that he showed it to people and dumped him soon after.

Would that count as porn?

giyadas · 05/01/2011 01:40

oh so it's my head that's the horrible image in that scenario - cheers! Grin Grin

giyadas · 05/01/2011 01:42

dunno but pmsl at 'generously begardened'
that phrase is definitely a keeper!

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 05/01/2011 01:43

i am 24 and shave it all off. have done since i was 17. i used to have a landing strip but my Exp suggested taking it all off once and i did and i liked it so it stuck. he is long gone but the baldy doll has stayed.

ILoveItWhenYouCallMeBoo · 05/01/2011 01:44

oh yes, EXP also veeted his business. what's good for the goose...

cordiality · 05/01/2011 07:05

I get everything waxed off and I'm 33. I'd probably leave a landing strip if I could, but I have a weird bald patch at the front, no idea why, had it for years! When I let my LG grow back it looks like a monk's bald head. (is that called a tonsure?). DH thinks it's hilarious. Hmm

Anyway, I love it all gone and tidy, esp at the back, makes me less self conscious in bed as well. The suggestion that doing this might make one look like a child (or even a baby as someone has suggested?!) is frankly ridiculous. I have breasts, and hips, and a woman's body, and at the moment a 34 week pregnant stomach. There is absolutely nothing pornographic or lolita like about me!

Blatherskite · 05/01/2011 07:32

Looking like a plucked chicken is not attractive at all.

A neat bit of downstairs topiary is much nicer IMO.

FattyArbuckel · 05/01/2011 07:37

Do any of you hair free laydees shave instead of waxing? Do you have to do it every day?

Chandon · 05/01/2011 07:44

Waxing or shaving leaves me with chicken skin and ingrown hairs, so I just wax the sides, and keep the rest as short as possible (have a bikini trimmer).

I started doing it about 7 yrs ago (am 40) when I was living in a tropical climate and always very hot and sweaty and wearing bikinis a lot, so was MUCH better at overall hair removal.

Once I started there was no going back.

I do not think I was influenced by porn.

It actually made me wonder what took me so long, since I shave under arms as well.

All of you who leave it as it "is there for a reason" I presume you leave your armpit hair long as well?

bronze · 05/01/2011 07:47

Will never ever understand this hygiene reason for shaving. It's not more hygenic if you wash your garden anyway.

SaorAlba · 05/01/2011 07:48

I read most of this thread thinking 'how strange are these young uns' then realised I too am under 25. Pregnancy brain has caused me to forget my age.

Anyway, I generally just trim with scissors, but sometimes (every six months or so) shave all except the triangle for a bit of novelty. 25 weeks pregnant and recently shaved again because I can't see to cut it and it was getting so long that it was escaping from my underwear. I like to be able to walk around the house in my pants without it sticking out.

bamboobutton · 05/01/2011 07:54

i started shaving mine off at at about 18.

i had never had a serious boyfriend, was a virgin until 22 in fact, so it was nothing to do with pleasing men.

i had never watched porn so it was nothing to do with being influenced by that either.

it was purely for hygiene as periods used to get very messy.

i don't do it anymore as i can't be arsed to hold the overhang out of the way to do a proper job.

AllOverIt · 05/01/2011 07:56

Trimmed triangle and shaved / waxed sides for me. I'm 33. Cannot imagine getting rid of it all. Have never done it, but couldn't imagine the re-growth....

Lonnie · 05/01/2011 08:23

well I am 40 and I do not meet that criteria. I have had it like that for 20+ years though I cant bear it growing out it itches like crazy

AmandaCooper · 05/01/2011 08:30

How weird to find this out! I tried shaving it all once but never again - I ended up with ingrowing hairs and infected hair follicles, it was awful.

Ironically I've always felt obliged to grow it before a smear as I usually have it trimmed short and I worry the nurse might think I'm a pervert!

I think it must be the influence of modern porn as well.

tyler80 · 05/01/2011 08:32

I swim in a squad and there's plenty of under 25's. Not that I'm in the habit of taking a look but the majority have some pubic hair. I don't believe 98% of under 25's have a Hollywood, I can believe a high percentage have a Brazilian

ifancyashandy · 05/01/2011 08:34

I'll let you in on a secret - the Venus razor was designed to do a lady's undercarriage! Tis why it is wide and flat, unlike the old fashioned Bic.

I shave the sides into a triangle and do the unneath also. I tried waxing but I am dark haired and 'abundant' Blush so it started to grown back within a day.

I started because I was asked by a boyfriend, liked the effect (look and 'feel'), so have kept it up. But don't take it all off coz it makes your hips look wide!

Am over 40.
