to not want to go in work when im on holiday?

Im on holiday from work at the mo, due to go back on tuesday.

Over the last few years a few of us have gone in over the christmas break for a few hours to try an catch up on paperwork without the phones going.

I should have gone in yesterday but ended up going the emergency dentist with dh, he had to have a tooth out.

Anyway i sent a text to my boss explaining that i wouldn't be in but could go in friday morning for a couple of hours, i got a text back last night saying no one was in on fri but i could do 10 - 4 on monday.

Its practically a full day, i know if i dont go in things will be very frosty.

aibu to not go in at all?

Tbh I wouldn't go either way, annual leave is precious.

Maybe you should go in, as you were supposed to go in, but maybe say something like 'I can't be there for 10, but I could go in at 1' or 'I can be there at 10, but I'll have to be away by 2' or somesuch?

I wouldn't be paid for going in, i will text her today and offer to do 2 hours on monday.

YANBU its called holiday for a reason! If you arent being paid there's no way they should expect you to go in. My DH's boss is always calling him about work related stuff when he's off, it drives me mad!

If you are just expected to do it for free then no way would I go in. Ridiculous to expect staff to do otherwise.

If it is as simple as it sounds, you really shouldn't be expected to go in while you're on leave - annual leave is for you to rest and recouperate.

On the other hand, if your employer gives a little at other times (an afternoon for Christmas shopping? Time to watch a world cup match? Early finishes in summer?), then it doesn't seem unreasonable to me that they expect a bit back sometimes.

Tell your boss that Friday is not convenient as you are on holiday and have made plans.
I think that your boss is taking advantage of you all.

No it is expected to be done for free, similar happened a while back when we moved premises, we were all expected to go in on the sunday to help out, i dont know about anybody else but i didn't get paid for it.

WTF? You're expected to do a full day's work unpaid during your holiday? I would tell your boss no way, unless of course he's going to pay you.

Er, not a chance. If I'm on leave then I'm on leave. Why do they think you should give that up for free? Tell them sorry but you're on leave.If they are frosty because you booked and took leave over Christmas then there is something else wrong.

thanks for the replies, my dh thinks im a mug aswel, i would like to turn around and say no but im sure it would piss them off and in turn make my life a misery at work. Im going to look for a new job in the new year as there have been other issues aswell, dont think i'll ever work for a small family company ever again.

I think it is out of order to expect you to work but is it possible that your boss meant you could go in any time between 10 and 4 on monday? Either way I think I would be tempted to tell them to stuff it - say you have family visiting or something.

No casmama they definately meant 10 - 4, still puzzled why my work colleagues are doing it, unless they had a christmas bonus and didn't tell me about it.

I would be questioning the insurance implications of having a member of staff working, unpaid, during their annual leave (probably fine, but might panic them and get you off the hook on this occasion).

I'd be making sure people knew I was actually away on holiday... like abroad somewhere. You couldn't be popping in from Sharm el Sheik could you.

Or tell them you have already booked to go out for lunch with friends that day so 10 till 4 is no way possible.

I think they are cheeky bastards.

There's a world of difference between choosing to go in during leave, in order to catch up on some tasks for your personal benefit, and being expected to go in (or in this case, being asked to go in).

Unacceptable. Don't do it. They are out of order and if there's any frostiness going on, by rights it should be from you for being put in this position.

I had a boss a bit like that once, although he didn't expect us to work during our annual leave, he would be constantly on the phone. Or if I had leave booked he would haul me into his office the day before and ask me to cancel. And sometimes if I tried to book holiday he would start questioning what it was for. He was a shit.

Plus Monday is an actual Bank Holiday too, so if it wasn't unreasonable before it definitely is on that day. Just don't go in, see what happens. You'll be leaving the firm anyway by the sound of it. If your colleagues see you made a stand, maybe they will in future too. You need to stop the tradition that's been started at this company. Terrible IMHO.

Really, you need to tell your boss that you aren't available on your holidays. Only way I can see this is acceptable if it was like my old company that officially shut between Christmas and New Year, but it wasn't taken out of your holiday allowance, so if you were asked to do something on those days from home (or to pop into the office) it seemed fair enough as those days were really a 'gift' from management.
