I see it more and more often in aibu.

"to of eaten this"

"to of gone out today"

To give a couple of examples.

But SM, typos and grammar are two different things.
You can speak incorrect grammar, but you can't speak incorrect spelling/typo!

The confusion with of and have is so basic that people really ought to know the difference.

have is part of the verb eg. have thought whereas of is a preposition.

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 21:35

I don't care on MN why would I ..you know nothing about me or how I would write in a formal situation so why assume I don't know

scottishmummy · 28/12/2010 21:36

i dont actually care.esp on online blah blah site.to keep stuff flowing i think spontaneous as it comes posting is better than habitual nit picking and expectation of good syntax

amijee · 28/12/2010 21:50

"The confusion with of and have is so basic that people really ought to know the difference."

This is starting to get up my f tits.

People OUGHT to know the difference? Who the hell do you think you are and what gives you the right to behave in such a way. And what makes you SO certain that your posts are written perfectly?

An earlier post ( sorry can't remember the name) mentioned she was a proof reader and enabled business people to improve their grammar. She can probably see lots of errors in the "pro grammar" camp.

At the end of the day, most people come on here to write as they chat - with all the slangs, shortcuts and regional nuances.

If you have something to prove, go and enter a fricking short story competetion.

scottishmummy · 28/12/2010 21:52

hallefuckinlujah,its online chat,spontaneous and pacey.

scottishmummy · 28/12/2010 21:53

amijee,nail,head.hit moment.well said

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 21:59

yep online chat is all the better for local dialect, slang etc it makes the person more real ..I read sm posts in a scottish accent lol

HouseOfBambooootiful · 28/12/2010 22:01

Haven't we done the thing about local dialect, slang etc not being what this discussion is about?

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 22:05

well it is really though houseofbamboo ..because you can bet yer bottom dollar the pedants would wince, vomit and faint at the words gonna ,ain't, nowt etc if they can't cope with could of [round in circles]

scottishmummy · 28/12/2010 22:07

well ah dinnae fash maself whit a biscuit arse thinks about my spelling

Doobies · 28/12/2010 22:07

Thanks for getting personal scottishmummy. I am a regular poster on here and was merely opening a point for discussion. I never called anyone thick or stupid. There was no need to take the piss out of my name.

OP posts:
HouseOfBambooootiful · 28/12/2010 22:08

Well - maybe I'm not a proper pedant but I'd happily use the words nowt or ain't if I felt like it. Probably not gonna though, I admit.

southeastastra · 28/12/2010 22:09

you can take the piss out of my name i don't mind

scottishmummy · 28/12/2010 22:10

scottishmummy · 28/12/2010 22:16

phew as you'd say usual whit a close shave

cabbageroses · 28/12/2010 22:20

amijee- you obviously belong in the "Don't try to tell me I am wrong" camp, as well as the "I have no sense of humour" camp, and the "I get abusive over things very easily" camp.

I am laughing at your "Go and write a short story" idea. MN is anonymous etc, otherwise I would fill you in and surprise you, lol.

Happy Xmas to you too!

scottishmummy · 28/12/2010 22:22

if mn is anonymous why are you constipated about what strangers write

HouseOfBambooootiful · 28/12/2010 22:24

If you don't care what strangers think about your posting style why are you spending time and energy defending it, eh, eh? Wink

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 22:24

Yes it anonymous musings and bollocks mostly, so it doesn't matter if its not grammatically correct does it

scottishmummy · 28/12/2010 22:25

eh eh oh hark at you.because i love blethering

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 22:25

because I'm bored and MN is very dull atm Grin

HouseOfBambooootiful · 28/12/2010 22:27

Uh huh.
