I see it more and more often in aibu.

"to of eaten this"

"to of gone out today"

To give a couple of examples.

OP posts:

ilovesooty - explain how the OP was worded as a 'discussion of language'. IF the OP had wanted a 'discussion of language' it could have been worded differently and placed in PC or even Chat.

AIBU to get annoyed .... is not a discussion of language.

Katisha · 28/12/2010 13:31

Gosh amijee, another heck of an assumption.

Could that not work both ways, that people who can't bear to be corrected also have self-esteem issues?

Animation · 28/12/2010 13:33

I put it down to flagging self-esteem, post Christmas disappointments and probably an inability to get a meaningful shag this season. Xmas Hmm

bruxeur · 28/12/2010 13:35

How does all that make you forget how to write English like a grown-up?

ilovesooty · 28/12/2010 13:36

It was a discussion of how certain language use might be annoying. The OP asked whether she was BU to feel annoyed - reasonably enough, I thought. As far as I can see the discussion became unpleasant when people started reacting defensively to the extremely brief OP. After that certain posters suggested (wrongly in my view) that it was appropriate to correct individuals on threads for their own good.

Still, it appears that there are certain boundaries to AIBU that I'd hitherto been unaware of. Obviously any discussion of modern day language/register is bang out of bounds.

Animation · 28/12/2010 13:39

Telling someone that "you're doing it for their own good" has always struck me as a particularly scary and dodgy excuse.

amijee · 28/12/2010 13:40

Oh - an opinion has now become an assumption has it?

I said "I believe" not "It is"

BTW Animation, my self esteem must be in my boots if it's related to shags! Grin Too many young kids!!

MarianneM · 28/12/2010 13:40

No nerve touched santa - I got A's for english language and literature at O Level.

Amijee - Your academic qualifications don't seem to have taught you how to use apostrophes :) Surely you got As as opposed to A's for English language and literature?

ilovesooty · 28/12/2010 13:41

I agree. Most of us who've commented haven't seen fit to justify correcting individuals, yet we've been criticised as though we had.

ChippingIn · 28/12/2010 13:43

Ilovesooty - no, it's not 'bang out of order' or 'out of bounds' to discuss modern day language, it is simply bad manners to ask 'AIBU to get annoyed...' that some people don't know it should be 'to have' and not 'to of' thus pointing out yet another mistake they make when posting on here and make them feel uncomfortable/embarrassed.

I can't see why you find basic manners so baffling.

amijee · 28/12/2010 13:44

Marianne - I arrest my case.

Clearly they have not taught me to write properly but do I want someone to tell me that on a chat site? Most definitely NOT.

And why? Because I don't give a flying f*

Animation · 28/12/2010 13:45

Remember Morecalme and Wise?

"What do you think of it so far?"

"Rubbish!!"

Xmas Grin
ilovesooty · 28/12/2010 13:46

"I can't see why you find basic manners so baffling."

I could regard that as pretty rude if I wanted to be sensitive.

So...it's poor manners to refer to any state/behaviour on AIBU just in case it might be relevant to some individual mumsnetter who just might find it critical/embarrassing?

ilovesooty · 28/12/2010 13:50

"it is simply bad manners to ask 'AIBU to get annoyed...' that some people don't know it should be 'to have' and not 'to of' thus pointing out yet another mistake they make when posting on here and make them feel uncomfortable/embarrassed."

Also the OP didn't ask that: she didn't use the words "don't know it should be" which I agree would have affected her tone. Perhaps you'd care to glance back to check.

blueshoes · 28/12/2010 13:54

I'd be much happier to be indirectly corrected on my English in an anonymous internet forum (in the way the OP has ie without naming names) than in RL.

You cannot choose to be wrong in an edgy way, if you never knew what the correct way of doing it is. That would just be ignorance.

amijee · 28/12/2010 14:01

Hey here's an idea.

MN headquarters should create a new smiley to represent the sentiment "I am more than happy for you to correct my writing in this post"

In this way, everyone's happy. Even I would be happy to stick one of those smiley faces on a post as I am INVITING people to help me.

Is this not the most reasonable way forward?

ledkrsbellyislikesantas · 28/12/2010 14:05

good grammar camp, do you also punctuate texts can i ask,or shopping lists?Cos i see those things on par with typing a post on mumsnet.Just interested.

ChippingIn · 28/12/2010 14:07

Oh FFS Sooty.

'It is simply bad manners to ask 'AIBU to get annoyed...' that some people don't know it should be PUT 'to have' and not 'to of' thus pointing out yet another mistake they make when posting on here and make them feel uncomfortable/embarrassed.

Happy now?

Why is it that you pick up on tiny insignificant thing like that and yet are unwilling to answer my questions directed at you?

Animation · 28/12/2010 14:08

And for the grammar police there could be a new smilie to represent the sentiment - "For your own good - not mine." Wink

blueshoes · 28/12/2010 14:10

I would not call myself 'good grammar camp', but yes, I do punctuate texts and don't use textspeak. I dislike sending texts BTW.

Shopping lists are just running lists of things, punctuation not needed. Correct spelling, of course. Why would I spell something wrongly? Bizarre.

Animation · 28/12/2010 14:13

Blueshoes - "BTW" - don't you mean, - by the way?

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 14:14

and MN is like having a conversation ..well it is for me anyway ...I might write 'gonna'or 'ain't' ,then you would need your spelling salts Grin

HouseOfBambooootiful · 28/12/2010 14:16

Personally I don't see that posting on MN IS the same as texting or writing a shopping list. When posting on MN I usually have access to a full-sized keyboard and can type quickly, so using sentences and punctuation isn't a problem.

It does drive me insane when I try and post from my phone, with its tiny keyboard and predictive text, so I tend not to bother. (Also I still have logging in problems on the HTC, but that's a separate ishoo Wink )

blueshoes · 28/12/2010 14:16

Animation, the answer is yes. That is an acronym, BTW.

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 14:16

smelling salts* lol Grin
