To get annoyed when mnetters put "of" instead of "have"

I see it more and more often in aibu.

"to of eaten this"

"to of gone out today"

To give a couple of examples.

OP posts:
CoteDAzur · 28/12/2010 12:37

If you had not omitted the bit about "flat Earth", your quote would make more sense, by the way.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2010 12:37

"Ilovesooty - there is a whole section on MN for the OP to express annoyance - Pedants corner. I could start a thread on how annoying I find people who have sooty in their name - it would be my 'right' but it wouldn't be very nice would it? Same thing."

I don't think it is the same thing. One is personally directed towards posters: the other isn't. I've not said that it would be reasonable to correct the grammar of individual posters, but you are saying that the OP had no right to start this thread expressing general annoyance in AIBU.

Katisha · 28/12/2010 12:38

Also why is this sort of debate so terrible that is has to go in the Corner of Pedants? (Neatly avoiding debate over apostrophe...)

What a shame that discussion of language use has to be hidden away so as not to cause offence.

CoteDAzur · 28/12/2010 12:39

not but not dark in previous post.

I'm writing on iPad with a quirky auto-correct function.

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 12:43

I don't need other posters to tell me how to write my posts thanks ...If I was having difficulty writing a job application I would ask for advice or google it Grin

Also don't you think some people might be embarrassed about their lack of education ,and to be told they are thick and stupid is much much worse than any grammatical or spelling error imo

HouseOfBambooootiful · 28/12/2010 12:53

I don't see any problem with discussing a general point about a commonly-made grammatical error.

nightmarebeforechristmas · 28/12/2010 12:57

wonders if she should start a thread asking aibu to tell anyone who corrects my spelling to fuck off?

usualsuspect · 28/12/2010 12:59

Not many people on here (including the OP) have suggested correcting the errors of individual posters.

amijee · 28/12/2010 13:01

"Amijee and Animation, that was a TYPO FFS, I still use correct grammar so am not stupid like you two as I am able to spot the difference. I am breast feeding and typing with one hand, typing errors are excusable, being thick isn't"

Shock

So are we trying to cleanse the world of thick people now?

I am intrigued to know what the definition of being thick or stupid are. Apparently I'm stupid because I fail to see the difference between typos and grammatical errors and I think it's ok for people to type how they like on a social chat site!

Shame...my academic qualifications fall in the top 1% of the country WinkBut until now I didn't feel the need to ram it down people's throats.

Katisha - you have not made a comment directed at one single poster (I never said you had), however, you have been commenting all through this thread about people being ignorant if they make mistakes!

Of course it's not 'superior' to know the difference - it is acting in a superior manner to point it out to others.

It is not morally superior not to care about it - it is, however, good manners not to point out errors other people have made, thus not making them feel uncomfortable/upset/embarrassed.

I also think you are wrong, I am sure I would be able to find posts where I have typed should of/would of when I would never write that (actually write not type) and if I proof read it I would pick it up. I have also seen posts where I have typed 'are' instead of 'our', 'there' instead of 'their'. When I am typing and not actually 'writing' and just 'chatting' it just happens . It does not mean I don't know the correct word to use. It does not show a basic misunderstanding - it shows a lack of attention, that's all.

If someone is preparing a formal document then there is no excuse for incorrect grammar/spelling/punctuation. There are plenty of resources to enable you to present those perfectly, however, I do not expect people to take the same level of care in casual situations such as this.

Ilovesooty - you are really failing to see the difference here aren't you. This is an informal chat site, a teacher in a classroom setting is not the same at all.

Cote to Amijee It would be interesting to hear if you can express yourself at this level in another language, but given your callous attitude to your own, not to mention an aversion to learning and education in general, I would seriously doubt that you do

Katisha - no you are right, it doesn't make people feel superior Hmm

ilovesooty · 28/12/2010 13:06

So other AIBU threads don't pass judgement on people? The actual OP simply states annoyance: it doesn't seem to pass judgement to me.

By that token an awaful lot of AIBU threads shouldn't be started just in case they offend people who might read them.

The OP was quite brief and did not call people "thick" "lacking in intellect" etc. It wasn't rude either.

Katisha · 28/12/2010 13:15

Chipping, while I think we will have to agree to differ, once again I want to make it clear that when I use the term "ignorant" it is not in the sense of "stupid/thick/idiot". I use it in the sense of simply "not knowing". Therefore I do not attach superior/inferior connotations to it.

Ignorance is not always bliss.

I still don't see the problem with discussing a general point about a commonly-made grammatical error.

ilovesooty · 28/12/2010 13:18

Neither do I, HouseOfBambooootiful

bruxeur · 28/12/2010 13:19

Usual problem. Too many thickies, not enough big sticks.

ChippingIn · 28/12/2010 13:19

Ilovesooty -

AIBU To get annoyed when mnetters put "of" instead of "have"

AIBU to be annoyed when mnetters put 'sooty' in their user name

One is personally directed towards posters: the other isn't

Both are directed to mnetters, why are they different?

Katisha - stop trying to dress it up as something it isn't. It isn't a 'discussion of language' - it is someone wanting to feel superior to others.

HouseOf - there's nothing wrong with it at all - that is why there is a whole section for people to do just that Wink

NightmarebeforeChristmas - YANBU, but it has already been done :) How do you think Pedants' Corner came to be!

ilovesooty · 28/12/2010 13:23

I didn't even know Pedants' Corner existed before it was mentioned. I believe that point's been made earlier.

"Katisha - stop trying to dress it up as something it isn't. It isn't a 'discussion of language' - it is someone wanting to feel superior to others."

What evidence is there that this was the OP's intention?

Animation · 28/12/2010 13:25

"What is so wrong with people commenting on the correct use of language. It IS important."

Aaaaaaaaaahh Sadie - you see! If you're going to dish it - you've got to take it. Grin

amijee · 28/12/2010 13:27

I believe it's a self esteem thing.

If some people are so hell bent on correcting other people's grammar on here then they probably don't feel that good about themselves in RL.

Why the hell should people use the same care to write on MN as they do to fill in a job application? It's ludicrous!
