I was on the bus yesterday with 13mo ds. There was another lady on there with a baby who looked around 8/9 months. The other baby was whinging quite a lot and the mother got a packet of cheesy wotsits out of her bag, opened them and started giving them to her baby.

The prams were right next to each other and ds (who will grab at anything) held his hands out when he saw the packet. The mum reached over and popped a cheesy wotsit right in his mouth! She then put another one in his hand and gave me a big smile.

I don't care if she wants to feed that shit to her own child but if you're a total stranger and you want to give someones baby something to eat shouldn't you ASK??!! (To be honest he gobbled it down in a flash and looked at me as if to say why don't I get that more often but that's beside the point...Blush) Am I being an uptight middle class wotsit denier?

a wotsit won't do your kid any harm, but it is an ignorant and insensitive thing to do. allergies are pretty common, and very dangerous particularly for the age of your dc, before they 'know' what they are not allowed, but when they can grab and self feed.

My friend was wondering why her three children couldn't get enough of the food at parties...even eschewing the party games for chowing down on the crisps and cakes on the table. All the parents commented on their "good eating" Hmm She said it may have been because they didn't get these foods at home.

And she saw nothing wrong with being that strict at home.

YANBU I would always ask a parent before giving anything to a child. Someone on the bus gave ds a piece of bread broken off from the sandwich they were eating. He took it, but luckily we were getting off the bus and. I could take it off him and bin it!
I did feel a bit ungrateful but I just didn't like the idea of him eating it. I suppose its because its not something I would do. I would always ask.

I really fancy a bag of Wotsits now...

Sorry for being completely unhelpful.

YANBU, btw, of course she should have asked first.

As a mum with a child who has a dairy allergy, I would (and have been) annoyed if someone gave my child any type of food without asking first...it can affect their little tummies with diarrhoea for days afterwards and brings up blisters around their mouth.

I may come across to other mums as very 'picky' but they just don't understand because they havn't experienced the effects first hand so I don't blame them. This was a well meaning mother who should have just asked first, and most importantly not taken offence if the answer was no...

ChippingIn · 06/10/2011 22:06

Because it is AN OLD THREAD

Someone has been going around dragging up old threads.

BatsUpMeNightie · 06/10/2011 22:11

Someone needs to get a fucking grip! Mind - they're only doing it because it's annoying so I suppose it's keeping them from sitting in the corner eating glue.
