What is it for.

You are just conned into buying great big pretty boxes of boring dry fruit bread.

Tell me anyone if you actually eat all your pannetone.

Ditto wierdo cheeses (rhurbarb stilton for example) and 4-packs of dip.

there'll be a run on panettone tomrrow, won't there? (weather permitting)

JaneS · 20/12/2010 20:10

Cantucini/cantacini (no idea how to spell) are little biscuits you get in a tin. They have almonds in and are (literally) the texture of stone. You're meant to dunk them in sweet wine to soften then eat, but imo they just stay stale-tasting and dry.

They're Italian too, I think.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 20/12/2010 20:11

I think it's a choice, DanZZZen.

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 20:11

oh yes, we had those last Chrsitmas I remember. Nearly break your teeth

MamaVoo · 20/12/2010 20:13

Good point OP. Our local Italian deli has lots of pretty pannetone boxes hanging up I could almost be tempted to buy one (even though I think it's a dry and cheerless attempt at a cake).

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 20:14

that's because it is justa stepping stone to a bread and butter pudding

HouseOfBambooootiful · 20/12/2010 20:15

I won't be running towards any - it's safe from me and any glasses of prosecco which might cross my lips.

All you poncey dry crumb fans can have my ration. Xmas Grin

lal123 · 20/12/2010 20:35

Love love love chocolate panettone - delicious when spiked with tia maria and served with thick double cream - yum!

WilfShelf · 20/12/2010 20:37

I dunno what the Spanish have at Christmas but they have churros con chocolate, for which I will forgive them anything, trotters and all.

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 20:38

I bet churros is spanish for pig's ear

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 20:39

I don't think dh will ever forgive the cow's stomach he was served in Madrid though lol

I bet they have a really nice Christmas cake.

SleepWhenImDead · 20/12/2010 20:39

Liqueur chocolates - so pointless. Either drink alcohol, or eat chocolate, why do they have to be combined? My mother has thought for years that they are "cool" for a younger generation. I put off eating them until we have eaten every other treat and then stand next to the sink, biting off a bit, pouring the liqueur out and eating the rest.

Francagoestohollywood · 20/12/2010 20:40

I eat Panettone, because I am Milanese and it is Milan's Christmas pudding.
However, I only eat panettone made by a good confectioner, otherwise is crap.
Also, always, always eat panettone with a mascarpone cream.
Same goes with Pandoro.

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 20:40

don't like those either
