to think what is the point of pannetone, and other POINTLESS Christmas foods which we are conned into buying

What is it for.

You are just conned into buying great big pretty boxes of boring dry fruit bread.

Tell me anyone if you actually eat all your pannetone.

Ditto wierdo cheeses (rhurbarb stilton for example) and 4-packs of dip.

you make your own panettone? Really? How do you get that shape?

KaraStarbuckThrace · 20/12/2010 19:34

Haven't bought anything pointless, but my DSM has bought a fuck off huge box of polvorones.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 20/12/2010 19:38

Bread and Butter Pudding recipe

BitOfFun · 20/12/2010 19:43

I hate most Christmas food and don't bother buying any of it. Especially shrivelled scrotums pickled walnuts.

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 19:49

I came across a fantastic nick nairn panettone B&B pudding recent;y/ Rather posh, vanilla infused custardy mixture and chunks of dark choc.

I shall be making that one.

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 19:54

here it is

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 19:54

oh look! Nick describes The Panettone as 'a tad dry'

Stollen is the way forward. Aldi do a good Stollen, being German and all. Anything with marzipan has to be a good thing.

Cranberry sauce is pretty pointless though. Does anyone actually like the stuff?

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 19:58

yes, I like cranberry sauce. And bread sauce.

asmallbunchofmistletoe · 20/12/2010 19:58

The thing to do with panettone is

cut the top off
rip out the insides and crumble it
mix the crumbled panettone innards with grated chocolate, satsuma segments, cointreau and double cream
stuff the boozy filling back into the panettone
slice and eat

This is an authentic Italian recipe and keeps very well in the fridge.

Stollen isn't always with marzipan (thank goodness because I hate the stuff). Genuine Dresdner Stollen is always made without marzipan.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 20/12/2010 20:00

That recipe looks great Pointy. And I'm glad to see Nick gets his pannettone from Lidl Xmas Wink

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 20:02

I think I'll have a bash at thewhole panettone bread and butter pudding thing this year. I just wondered how that tastes when he puts Greek yoghurt in it

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 20:03

I think he just serves it with greek yoghurt, if I remember right. Double cream goes into the pudding.

TrillianAstra · 20/12/2010 20:03

I woud rather have a pork pie with just pork, some stilton on the side, and cranbeyyr sauce separately for any weirdos who want it. Not pork and stilton and cranberry in one pie.

JaneS · 20/12/2010 20:03

Oh dear. I am clearly a big greedy lardbucket.

I would happily eat any, and all of the items mentioned on this thread!

The only Christmassy thing I can think of that I'm not too keen on is cantacini (sp?) - too dry, like trying to munch on sandstone! Also my mum's chocolate mousse, which is made with bitter cocoa power instead of chocolate, and always comes with a thin dribble of raw egg white separating out of the mixture ... it's odd really, as she's otherwise a very good cook!

I love brussel sprouts with almonds drizzled in butter ... marriage made in heaven.

becaroodolf · 20/12/2010 20:04

I love pannetone...I fry slices on it in butter and then put icing sugar on it...yum, yum.

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 20:04

that mousse isn't sounding too good

what's cantacini?

MilliONaire · 20/12/2010 20:05

We love panettone here - especially the M&S version - deeeeeeeelicious! In fact I am now adding it to the list of things dh has to get there tomorrow - already looking forward to it with a lovely cup of coffee mmm

I am very sick at the moment and this is the first thing in about 5 days I have actually though - yum, I fancy some of that - have to have it now!!!

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 20:05

oo, I don't know what cantacini is

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 20:06

everything that people are doing totheir panettone is sounding like big-time calorie intake

fry in butter and put icing sugar on it! lol . I might just do that.

TrillianAstra · 20/12/2010 20:07

What wouldn't be nice if fried in butter and covered with icing sugar?

(rhetorical question, no need to tell me fox poo)

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 20:08

what sort of mystifies me about panettone is that it is supposed to be a cake and normally you just slice a cake and eat it (right?). Here you have to slice the top off, hollow it out, crumble it up, mix it with alcohola nd double cream or fry it in butter and coat it in icing sugar, toast it and lather on butter etc, turn it into a bread and butter pudding with cream and chocolate and serve with yoghurt

kind of a complicated cake
