What is it for.

You are just conned into buying great big pretty boxes of boring dry fruit bread.

Tell me anyone if you actually eat all your pannetone.

Ditto wierdo cheeses (rhurbarb stilton for example) and 4-packs of dip.

Stollen and Lebkucken are lovely, though.

HouseOfBambooootiful · 20/12/2010 17:14

Mmm - buttered malt loaf, lovely.

borderslass · 20/12/2010 17:14

I would rather have malt loaf
Got some last week was lovely

I have become very sensible at xmas food purchasing.

In the past I have been a fool, gone mental in M&S foodhall and spent a couple of £100 on buying everything that my parents did (when I was a child) at xmas. Of course, all that happened was that the kids and dh did not eat much of it and I felt obliged to stuff my face cos it was all on the fucking turn and going to waste! All I got for my trouble was tight trousers and the need to lose a few pounds come the third week of Jan when I had eventually eaten through it all.

Now, I do a xmas eve buffet and christmas day traditional food but beyond that I do not get drawn in at all.

ChippyMinTurnAgainWhittington · 20/12/2010 17:15

It's quite cheap in Lidl, as are all the Germanic bakes. If you must.

bupcakesandcunting · 20/12/2010 17:15

Eeveryone that is pointing out that GetOrf doesn't have to buy christmassy food shite is missing the point.

The point that GetOrf is a whingeing auld trout. Grin

ShanahansRevenge · 20/12/2010 17:17

YABU...we all love pannetone in our house and always have it n the coffee shop...perfect together.

TrillianAstra · 20/12/2010 17:17

I am with HalfTermHero - I think everything that you do (especially) should be analysed for 'am I doing this because my parents did it?'. If the answer is yes, try not doing it (or doing it differently) and see if you like that better.

moondog · 20/12/2010 17:17

Who the fuck buys prepared dip???

Tis Lucifer's smegma.

TrillianAstra · 20/12/2010 17:20

I'd need a whole bottle to wash it down.

moondog · 20/12/2010 17:22

House, you haven't??? Shock

Do you intend to serve it still in its horrid plastic container, perhaps with roughly broken clingfilm flapping over it?

Tell me what flavours you have so i can self combust with disapproval and give you a lecture on how you could make it yerself for 13p in 4 minutes.

usualsuspect · 20/12/2010 17:22

Bacon sarnies here for christmas breakfast not some weird cake /bread thingy [common]

MarniesMummy · 20/12/2010 17:22

CMTAW I am a self confessed supermarket snob. My friend introduced me to LIDL a few weeks ago and I'm in love!!

All the things I've bought have been wonderful! Grilled peppers, chocolate, tinned fruit... fantastic.

And I love the lack of recognisable brands, it makes you taste properly and decide whether you like it.

Still didn't buy any panettone! Just more fat for me to lose in the long run!

ronx · 20/12/2010 17:23

Brussels sprouts. Yuk.

TheBeast · 20/12/2010 17:24

Panettone, fresh or toasted with butter, is hugely nicer than tradiional British Christmas cake or pudding, IMHO.

MarniesMummy · 20/12/2010 17:24

IMAF I find that Prosecco goes best with ... ...my company!
No panettone required. Grin

HouseOfBambooootiful · 20/12/2010 17:27

Moondog - yes I really have ordered one. It was, er, four-pack flavour. You know the one, with the pinkish thousand-island corner, then the three indeterminate sour-cream-type ones.

I have been thoroughly dissuaded from wanting one now though, thanks Xmas Grin

SlightlySparkly · 20/12/2010 17:28

Panettone - stale bread
Baileys - sickly drink that should only be found in chocolates
Dates - repugnant and gritty
Brussels Sprouts - vile
Parsnips - taste floral and wrong
Any cheese with fruit pieces inserted - wrong wrong wrong
Marzipan - devil's work

And yet, I will buy all of these this year because I am a twat will be hypnotised by the Waitrose festive packaging.

moondog · 20/12/2010 17:30

Ah House, henceforth when I see oyur name I shall think... there's that slattern who buys dips. Bleurgh. Wink

Only permissible bought dip of Mexican style salsa. You could do a lovely blue cheese one yourself, not to mention a guacamole.

And a Marie Rose is fine with good seafood but make it, woman!

FattyArbuckel · 20/12/2010 17:31

Panetonne - worth buying but only for the tin imo

moondog · 20/12/2010 17:32

Slightly, parsnips and carrots mashed with pepepr and a konbo fo butter and served very very hot are divine.

I have shameful weakness for Stilton and apricot thus don't trust self to buy.

HouseOfBambooootiful · 20/12/2010 17:32

Agree with those Sparkly - except for marzipan and parsnips.

Baileys should only be consumed before midday (a la MIL), then the naughtiness outweighs the sickliness.
