What is it for.

You are just conned into buying great big pretty boxes of boring dry fruit bread.

Tell me anyone if you actually eat all your pannetone.

Ditto wierdo cheeses (rhurbarb stilton for example) and 4-packs of dip.

cakewench I got some zimtsterne in a pack of Bahlsen "Zum Fest" from Waitrose. I think we'll break into it tomorrow as we're snowed in. :)

headfairy · 20/12/2010 18:23

I haven't read the whole thread but by God I have to defend pannetone, the lightest most delicious cake. Of course I'm Italian and biased but it warms my heart that ds loves it too!

You've all been eating very substandard panettone by the sound of things. Tis delish, and also the only thing DD1 will ever eat for breakfast any time of year. I love spekulatius year round..

I love marzipan, mince pies (yes only homemade here too Peering) and Christmas pud. Christmas cake I could easily live without and I make tiramisu instead of sherry trifle. I roast parsnips with potatoes in the pan juices (yummmm) and will do the same with the sprouts this year -- lovely idea there.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 20/12/2010 18:30

YABVU - we're on our 4th panettone since they arrived in the shops in October Xmas Blush

emy72 · 20/12/2010 18:31

Actually the correct spelling is PANETTONE.

I am Italian too and it is our traditional Christmas cake.

If you don't like it then stick to the mince pies!! Nobody is making you buy them!

PS They don't all come in a pretty box, most of them are actually in normal packaging.

Lavitabellissima · 20/12/2010 18:32

I love panettone

Prefer Pandoro, even more when you layer it with nutella or sweet mascapone all with a lovely glass of Prosecco or Champagne on Christmas morning Xmas Grin

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 18:33

photos

Spekulatius are thin spicy biscuits cut into shapes (different shapes in one packet). Don't really know how to explain them. Have a look at the photos above.

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 18:33

I love the defence of the PANETTONE (note spelt correctly)

ebonyfish · 20/12/2010 18:35

Toblerone

A MNetter put me on to Ecclefechen tarts last Christmas - like open mince pies tasting more like a pecan pie - totally delish.

Truckulent · 20/12/2010 18:43

Bibbitybobbitysantahat- I'll acknowledge how funny your post was. Very funny.

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 18:45

oi. You slag da pannettone?

Nothign says christmarse like panettone.

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 18:45

Also, I want a panettone because you can make an absolutely delicious bread and butter pudding with it.

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 18:46

And spell it right. Two ts. One n. Well, two but they are separated

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 18:48

what is it - one or two?

panettoinydog · 20/12/2010 18:50

one n at the beginning, two ts in the middle, one n at the end

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 19:05

the main thing about panettone is that you can makea helmet out of the box

Ormirian · 20/12/2010 19:07

Ooh yes, the box is very good.

spamm · 20/12/2010 19:09

Are you mad? Xmas Grin

Panetone is delicious and we are so happy to have found a great source of it here in the US now. The guys in Trader Joe's must have thought we were strange buying the last 3 after Christmas last year, but I love it in the evening with a coffee.

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 19:12

the Defenders of the Panettone will be here to tell you that's one "n" 2 x "t"'s and 1 x "n"

glad you found it. Would have thought you could get it everywhere in the US..

Am watching a nice Italian baker making his panettone on here. More complicated that I would havethought.

seriously though: have you tried stollen?

Ormirian · 20/12/2010 19:13

Mum bought one a few months back that was a really weird shape - like a sort of cross with a lemon sort of flavour. Weird. Worse than the usual one amazingly Grin

BelleDeChocChipCookieMonster · 20/12/2010 19:13

Christmas pudding. Bloody horrible. I always end up gagging on it as I develop some sort of odd powder coating at the top of my mouth that's like concrete.

grumpypants · 20/12/2010 19:14

Mi dispiace, ma non mi piace panettone. Guarda che mi ricordo tanto della la lingua Italiana dalla laurea italiana. [Phew. Am sweating over the rubbish Italian I just dradged up].

TheNextMrsClaus · 20/12/2010 19:14

You panettone-haters are getting it wrong! Two things are needed to make it utterly, utterly delicious:

  1. A toaster
  2. A good lashing of butter

We had three last year (gifts from various suppliers from dh's business) and they didn't make it to the New Year.

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 19:15

the trick is to havea small amount of pudding and lots of sauce. My mother's puddings were so alcohol, they almost knocked you out before you get them near your mouth
