to find certain boardgames boring

I'm referring here mainly to the strategy games, I quite like a game of trivial pursuit or monopoly.

I was at a evening party and at around 8pm, a strategy board game came out. It was one of those where you have to get resources, then build roads, settlements, etc, and the game was still going on at midnight, and it was so boring. Only the hosts knew the rules, so we had to have it explained for around an hour. I stayed and played until the end but by around 10pm, I just didn't care anymore. I tried to hide my boredom, but I think it was difficult.

Was I being unreasonable?

I would rather knit socks (if I knew how). Only game I might play is chess

usualsuspect · 20/12/2010 09:54

The only board game I like is scrabble so YANBU

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 10:02

yes scrabble is ok

LaWeaselMys · 20/12/2010 10:06

Bad choice for a dinner party.

BreconBeBuggered · 20/12/2010 10:07

Scrabble is the only acceptable boardgame. Other than maybe a bit of Trivial Pursuit if the host really wants to.

Even Monopoly makes me lose the will to live after about thirty minutes.

Yulephemia · 20/12/2010 10:09

What tedious hosts! "We love this game so we're going to make the rest of you play it for 2+ hours!" Xmas Confused

I find Monopoly tedious: I need to try the new version that you can play more quickly.

I like that DD (8) is at an age where you can play a board game with her and there's a good chance she will win! She's a corker at Connect 4, and DH is teaching her chess. She's also good at Cluedo, and Santa is bringing her Cranium for Christmas. Xmas Smile

I love Scrabble and played it non-stop on my DS for about 18 months!

YANBU - the hosts are wankers and games that take longer than an hour to play are stupid.

RitaLynn · 20/12/2010 10:22

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that would have been boring. Still, I wish I had been better at hiding my boredom. I didn't actually say "oh my god this is so boring", but I don't think I expressed a sense of joy throughout the four hours.

4 hours ...

TheChewyToffeeMum · 20/12/2010 10:25

I hate them too - the only one I enjoy is Trivial Pursuit.

I especially hate them when someone thinks it is funny to cheat Xmas Angry

RitaLynn · 20/12/2010 10:25

This couple are the Buddhist - we don't have a telly - so we play board games - type people.

I love, love, love board games. Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble, Monopoly, Cranium, Articulate, Cluedo, Pictionary. I love them all and do make my guests play them when they visit Xmas Blush . DH is not a big board game person and gets so fed up with me. My sister and I both love them and usually end up arguing about the rules

The long, boring settlement game does sound a bit much though. I prefer a game to be over reasonably quickly. With Monopoly the key is for everyone to get buying and building that way it doesn't tend to drag on for too long.

LostArt · 20/12/2010 10:32

After dinner at a friends house, the host said 'anyone up for a special game'. My DH had a [shocked] look on his face, assuming he meant a bit of wife swapping! Swigging would have been preferable to the strategy game we played. For hours.

I can cope with Shave the Sheep, and that's about it.

TrillianAstra · 20/12/2010 10:36

Articulate is good and screechy. Scrabble too difficult if you have been drinking.

You need games that are short. If you like it a lot you can shuffle teams and have another go.

purpleduck · 20/12/2010 10:54

lol at "special game"

hahahahahahahaha. I think I would have had the same look on my face too....

MardyQuickFollowThatStar · 20/12/2010 10:56

what game was it OP?

DanZZZenAroundTheTreeAgain · 20/12/2010 10:58

I would take a thick book next time I visit the Buddhists.

RitaLynn · 20/12/2010 11:02

Mardy, it was Settlers of Catan

Just wondering so we can avoid it!

MardyQuickFollowThatStar · 20/12/2010 11:08

thanks

mayorquimby · 20/12/2010 11:12

Articulate. Always Articulate.
Everything else is shit

Species8472 · 20/12/2010 11:15

YANBU. Board games are tedious and best avoided, other than possibly Trivial Pursuit. I would be horrified if I was expected to play board games at a party. I have similar views on card games. Horrific.

TrillianAstra · 20/12/2010 11:25

"Articulate. Always Articulate.
Everything else is shit"

I agree

Shodan · 20/12/2010 11:30

I like things like Articulate and Balderdash, but never get the chance to play them.

I cannot, however, tolerate bloody fecking Monopoly anymore. I used to enjoy it, then when ds1 was about 8 he developed a passion for it and I had to play every day for months. If he lost he had a strop so sometimes I failed in my duty to teach him the Right Way and just let him win to avoid the strop.

And I've never liked chess either. Hours of boredom to be had there...

Talker2010 · 20/12/2010 11:36

Monopoly
Scrabble
Trivial
Risk
Pictionary
Taboo
Pass the Bomb
Cluedo
Variations on themes of above

All excellent

If I thought my dinner guests did not enjoy I would get new dinner guests
