to find certain boardgames boring

I'm referring here mainly to the strategy games, I quite like a game of trivial pursuit or monopoly.

I was at a evening party and at around 8pm, a strategy board game came out. It was one of those where you have to get resources, then build roads, settlements, etc, and the game was still going on at midnight, and it was so boring. Only the hosts knew the rules, so we had to have it explained for around an hour. I stayed and played until the end but by around 10pm, I just didn't care anymore. I tried to hide my boredom, but I think it was difficult.

Was I being unreasonable?

Love all of them except Monopoly. Puts me off capitalism completely.

TorcherQueenie · 20/12/2010 12:18

Ooh enjoying the reccomendations of games Grin We have a copy of Cranium we won but DD has been to young to play so we're taking it to the inlaws for Xmas should be a laugh when everyones tipsy.

sims2fan · 20/12/2010 12:26

I like a good board game personally. I used to love it when I was younger and my brother and his wife would visit and bring 'Risk' with them. We would all play it in the evening, and my mum would provide drinks and snacks. It was great fun. I was really disappointed when they started bringing their Playstation for entertainment instead. It always used to be a Christmas tradition at my house too. Presents, dinner, then a new board game. Last year I was quite disappointed when I was at the in laws on Christmas Day and we just watched TV all day. Even while having dinner! I'm there again this year so expect it will be TV, not games, again.

wisecamel · 20/12/2010 12:31

Oh god, I am that host Shock Well, not OP's actual host as am not Budhist, but love playing board games for hours after dinner and thought everyone else did too. Am a bit gutted now. This explains why people have taken to suggesting meeting out, rather than coming over. I thought it was my cooking!!

MsKLo · 20/12/2010 12:34

I really need a few good recommendations for board games!

any good ones that people love?

MsKLo · 20/12/2010 12:34

oh and i will try articulate

iloveblue · 20/12/2010 12:40

Rapidough is excellent - especially after a few drinks!

Sidge · 20/12/2010 12:40

I like:

Articulate
Perudo
Pass the Bomb
Scene It
Trivial Pursuit
Pictionary
Scrabble

But Monopoly bores me to tears, and that strategy game sounds tedious.

JaneS · 20/12/2010 12:43

Oh, I like Settlers. But only when played with my brothers at home, when it's really just an excuse for us to re-live all the stupid jokes from when we were little.

I think board games are best played with family for that reason - unless they're things like Chess or Scrabble that everyone knows.

I'm sorry, but if I went for dinner at someone's house and they offered a board game, I'd probably call it a night!

MsKLo · 20/12/2010 13:21

what about the mr and mrs game? need coupley ones for new years once dc are in bed and that is all i can think of!

Opinionatedfreak · 20/12/2010 13:48

I like settlers too but wouldn't inflict it on non boardgame geeks.

Other geeky (but actually playable - settlers is not this category as it requires quite a lot of pre game knowledge) games are carcasonne and ticket to ride.

Played transamerica recently and it was really easy to pick up.

I have a group of fellow geeks that I meet specially to play boardgames with.

A good website if you are looking to buy a new game is boardgameguru.

GeekLove · 20/12/2010 14:03

Is that the same place as boardgamegeek.com? Only that is a useful review site for games. I am quite fond of board games particuarly the geeky sorts but my friends and DH quite like the really long ones (2h+). I just dont have the attention span for those.
Once I like are:

Race for the Galaxy
Small world
Carcassone
Scrabble
Chaos in the Old World.

As for Catan, I'm not that fond of it. It does go on and it is a bit too random for my tastes - too dependant on dice and where you put your villages on the first turn. There is also the problem in a long board game when you know you haven't any chance of winning but are stuck there until its game over.

camdancer · 20/12/2010 14:33

I like settlers too but it does take a while to learn - and until then it is just tedious. So fine if everyone has played before but not otherwise. Sounds like a very boring evening.

My BIL always brings random board games down for Christmas. He is the only one who knows the rules and then we have to play them with him. Oh and the rules then seem to change when he isn't winning. Or he suddenly remembers a rule that usually means he wins and we all lose. Oh joy. Can't wait to see what this years offering is. Xmas Hmm Why he can't just bring Cluedo, Trivial Pursuit or even Settlers - something at least someone has heard of before.

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 20/12/2010 15:21

Rummicub.

God it's dull. And the only game the ILs play (and they play it all the time - and get it out for a 'treat').

God, it's like the card game, but with scrabble tiles. Because FIL doesn't like playing cards Hmm.

I'm all irritable now just thinkig about it!
